Checking in before checking out, and other USF Bulls tidbits

Hey folks, hope everyone has a great week.

For the regulars who visit the blog each day, I want to let you know that I’m heading out on vacation later today, so the blog will be quiet.

It’s time to take a break to get recharged after a crazy few months and before football season kicks off.

I did stop by USF this morning for Stan Heath’s press conference on the Bulls’ upcoming trip to Brazil to compete in the Pan-American University Championships.

I also talked to Barry Clements, a senior associate athletic director at USF, about the trip and how it all came to fruition. I’ll have an in-depth story before the Bulls head off to Brazil on Aug. 7 in what should be a great experience for the players and coaches.

Heath said it was odd to see the Bulls practice Sunday in the red, white and blue they’ll wear in Brazil representing the U.S. in the eight-team tournament.

A couple of programming notes:

+ Baseball coach Lelo Prado should have a baseball coach named later in the week. Prado was swarmed with good applicants and has taken his time in making a decision.

+ Women’s basketball coach Jose Fernandez had 68 applicants for the assistant coach’s job that opened with Andrea Williams left to become head coach at Air Force. Fernandez could also have a replacement named this week.

+ Track-and-field athlete Neaman Wise is competing in the World Junior Championships this week in Canada. GoUSFBulls.com will have updates on Wise’s performance in the decathlon, an event he won in the U.S. finals last month in Iowa.

+ Football players continue to prepare for the start of fall camp on Aug. 4, with receiver T.J. Knowles the latest to arrive on campus. Knowles is a transfer from Saddleback (Calif.) Junior College and is expected to help at receiver with the losses of A.J. Love and Sterling Griffin.

+ Speaking of football transfers, USF continues to have talks with potential transfers Donald Bowens (N.C. State) and Darrell Scott (Colorado), but it remains uncertain if either will be a part of the team by the start of fall camp.
