Each year, Hillsborough County sends dozens of football standouts to the college ranks. Here is a look at what some of them did during the past week for their respective teams. We’ll put together a list each Monday.
Indiana running back Demetrius McCray: The former Armwood star had a career-high 134 yards rushing, including a 59-yard touchdown run, in Hoosiers’ 23-19 win over Western Michigan.
South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia: The former Jefferson standout went 31-for-51 passing for 313 yards and two touchdowns in the Gamecocks’ 41-37 loss to Georgia.
Georgia Tech running back Anthony Allen: The former Jesuit standout had 127 yards rushing, including an 82-yard touchdown run, to help the Yellow Jackets defeat Clemson, 30-27.
South Florida receiver Carlton Mitchell: The Gaither product had four receptions for 130 yards in the Bulls’ 35-13 win over Western Kentucky.
Bucknell quarterback Marcello Trigg: The former Robinson signal caller and Guy Toph Award winner completed 15 of 25 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown to help the Bison defeat Robert Morris, 26-23.
Florida State running back Ty Jones: The former Middleton standout had 40 yards rushing and two touchdown runs to help the Seminoles edge Jacksonville State, 19-9.
Florida International receiver Greg Ellingson: The Robinson product had a five receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown in the Golden Panthers’ 40-14 loss to Alabama.
Florida linebacker A.J. Jones: The Middleton product had three tackles and a sack in the Gators’ 56-6 win over Troy.
Florida A&M defensive back LeRoy Vann: The Blake product, a return specialist, set school records for punt return yards (189) and punt returns for touchdowns (two) in the Rattlers’ 34-10 win over Winston-Salem State.
Northern Michigan running back Antonio Wallace: The Tampa Bay Tech product had 73 yards rushing and three touchdown runs on nine carries in the Wildcats’ 62-0 win over Tiffin.
And finally, the Stony Brook-Colgate matchup featured a pair of former Hillsborough County kickers. Stony Brook’s Wesley Skiffington (Armwood) connected on a pair of 36-yard field goals for the Seawolves, while Colgate’s Evan Colborne (Hillsborough) had a 26-yard field goal for the Raiders. Colgate won the game, 23-13.
