Chargers eager for first varsity test

It’s a season of firsts for new program Strawberry Crest, and Coach Todd Donohoe said the Chargers are eager to take the next step with their first game against a full varsity squad.

Strawberry Crest hosts St. Pete Catholic on Friday in its Class 2A-District 5 opener, a game that also will serve as the first district game in program history.

“It should be a good challenge for us,” Donohoe said of the matchup with the Barons, who have won three straight after suffering a one-point loss to Berkeley Prep in Week 1.

Strawberry Crest split its first four games, falling to fellow first-year program Steinbrenner in the season-opener and to Armwood’s junior varsity last week. Those losses sandwiched wins over Plant City and Durant’s jv squads. Donohoe said he’s been impressed with his team’s progress each week, but he’s curious to see how his team responds to what he calls the biggest difference between junior varsity and varsity football: speed of the game.

One recent change for the Chargers has been under center, where Brandon Reaves has replaced Andrew Tedder. Reaves, a sophomore, is a dual-threat quarterback, and Donohoe loves his athleticism and mobility.

“He’s the type of kid that if there’s trouble, he can take off and go and create something for us,” Donohoe said.

Donohoe said Tedder is now working at receiver and has taken the change well.

“Andrew is a great leader and a great captain for us,” Donohoe said.
