The knee injury Carrollwood Day DB/RB Nate Lewis sustained Monday in practice was worst than expected.
According to Patriots coach Lane McLaughlin, the junior tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his previously sprained right knee.
On Monday, Lewis went out to the practice field with team trainers and was put through drills and cleared to play prior to that day’s practice. When practice ensued later that afternoon, Lewis suffered the second knee injury, while returning a punt.
The knee was originally sprained in a game against Shorecrest Prep in September, forcing Lewis to miss three weeks of the season. The two-way player was due to return Friday night against Cambridge.
On offense, Lewis had five carries for 37 yards and two touchdowns, two receptions for 48 yards. Defensively, he tallied 44 tackles, two interceptions and pass defense, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He also returned three punts.
