CDS at Cambridge Football: Look who’s coming to dinner

Here’s a little insight when it comes to the Cambridge Christian-Carrollwood Day football matchup: the rivalry is brief, but fierce.

“We don’t like them, they don’t like us,” CDS senior WR Dillon Floyd said. “So we want to go out and beat them on their own turf.”

The Patriots have beaten the Lancers in their only two meetings – 38-15 in 2010 and 37-0 in 2009.

So what happens when your next door neighbor and buddy attends your rival school and will face you on the football field later that week?

Invite him over for dinner.

Carrollwood Day School receiver Dylan Floyd is neighbors and good friends with Cambridge Christian WR/DB Robbie Robertson. Even as the two prepare to play what could be the biggest game of the season for each team to this point, the friendship remains.

“He actually was over for dinner (Sunday) night,” Floyd said grinning. “He’s like my little brother. We grew up together, I told him, come Friday I’m still going to have to come out and whoop up on you.”

Floyd has caught 21 passes for 524 yards and five touchdowns. He’s also collected 51 tackles, four passes defensed and three interceptions. Robertson, a junior, has caught 42 passes for 527 yards and seven TDs, while rushing for 150 yards pm 18 carries and one score. Defensively, he has 50 total tackles, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, two sacks and a forced fumble.

After a good laugh, Floyd admitted: “We’ll both play hard. We’ll talk after the game, but it’s all business during the game. We’ll still be friends outside, but once it’s game time, it’s time to go.”

For Cambridge (5-2, 4-2), they remain alive for a spot in the playoffs. They sit in third place in Class 2A-District 5 standings and must win Friday against the Patriots (4-3, 2-3) and again in the season finale against Admiral Farragut, the district’s No. 2 team.

Carrollwood Day is all but out of the postseason hunt. They will need to win out and have several other teams pull off some major upsets in the final weeks of the regular season. Chances of that happening are slim. That said, CDS would love to knock the Lancers out of playoff contention in hopes of a 7-3 overall finish.
