ST. PETERSBURG Left fielder Carl Crawford is not in the lineup tonight when the Rays open a three-game series with the visiting Diamondbacks and he’s not sure when he will return.
“It’s just real sore. Kind of like it was yesterday. One of those things where you have to keep trying to stretch it and get it loose,” Crawford said before the game. “We haven’t even tried to start stretching it yet. So tomorrow, hopefully it will feel better.”
Manager Joe Maddon said the team will be cautious in rushing Crawford back in the lineup.
“We got to be careful with it,” Maddon said.
Crawford will receive treatment throughout the game and could be used as a pinch-runner. Maddon said Crawford is not scheduled to have an MRI.
“It’s bothersome, but it doesn’t appear to be too bad,” Maddon said.
Crawford injured the shoulder while making a throw to the plate during Wednesday’s game and removed himself from the line after two innings Thursday.
“I didn’t feel a pop,” Crawford said. “Sometimes when you throw you feel soreness. You always have aches and pains and you think it will just be gone tomorrow, like that. That’s what I thought. The next day it came and I was sore. I tried to do all I could to play and once I saw I couldn’t do anything I figured I better take care of it.”
