CB Gay, LB Briggs On Radar As Well

Posted Feb 29, 2008 by Roy Cummings

The first battle of the season between NFC South teams is under way and it’s over free-agent cornerback Randall Gay.

Gay is in New Orleans today and he’s going to visit the Bucs on Monday, but only if they agree to meet his general contract demands.

‘‘I want to see if there in the ballpark first before we go down there so we’ll talk tonight and see where it goes,’’ Gay’s agent, Albert Elias, said.

Elias said Gay has about eight or nine teams expressing interest in him but that he only intends to visit two or three.

The Bucs are on the short list along with the Saints and possibly the Falcons, but Elias may not get the answer he’s looking for when he calls.

Word around the league now is that the Bucs may have already entered into negotiations aimed at signing fellow cornerback Drayton Florence.

We’re not sure how far along those talks are but if Florence is signed it would likely decrease Gay’s desire to come to Tampa.

The Bucs are also believed to be looking at possibly signing cornerback Jacques Reeves, but he may come in as a replacement for reserve Sammy Davis.

In other developments, the Bucs may have some interest in meeting with free agent LB Lance Briggs.

Many thought Briggs would be one of the most highly sought-after free agents in this year’s marketplace but he has so far drawn very little interest.

Also, WR Javon Walker was released today by the Broncos. The Bucs were one of the teams the Broncos tried dealing Walker to two weeks ago.

The Bucs may have more interest now that Walker is free, but they are also entertaining Devery Henderson and D.J. Hackett.

get briggs, he will bolster and set our LB corps for a while with june and ruud and brooks. I would like to see the bucs go after hackett strongly as well. If he stays healthy for the full year he will really produce, approx 60 rec. 900-1000 yards, and maybe 6-8 TDs

You heard it here first

Awesome.  We would have 3 of the top 5 wlb in the league.  Have to figure out a way to get them all on the field at the same time.

Here’s a new thought, maybe the Bucs defense wants to switch to a 3-4 with Briggs, Brooks, Ruud, and June.  What a LB corps that would be.  That would also explain the rumored interest in aquiring a studly run stopping DT like Marcus Stroud.  Randall Gay would be a nice addition especially after the emergence of Phillip Buchanon last year.  The Bucs definately need a good producing receiver for the offense.

We over pay a Center with a ridiculous contract while Asante Samuel is off signing with the Eagles. So far we have met with a bunch of solid back ups and 2nd string guys. WTH happen to getting “Tiger Woods type talent”? While I would like to see Briggs in a Bucs Uniform, it is ridiculous to sign a LB when we don’t even need one, meanwhile all the top playmaker wide recievers and corner backs are being signed to other teams. We aren’t filling our needs, we aren’t even upgrading. We let a bunch of solid back ups go just so we could sign a bunch of new back ups. We have done nothing to add explosivness to our offense and our secondary is gonna get picked apart next year. Good job!

Would be great if J. Walker was healthy, he’s a quality WR when he’s on the field.

Great, more linebackers!! How about some defensive line help, you don’t need great corners if you have an awesome pass rush, Giants proved that no!!!

I am wondering why we would go after a big name at linebacker when we already have one of the best LB corps in the league. I understand Brooks isnt getting any younger, but Brooks can still play. I think we would do better drafting another LB and letting him learn from the bench, rather than have someone like Brooks,Briggs,Ruud,or June on the bench.

it would be great if we got briggs . brooks isnt going to last forever. that would give us the best linebacker group in the nfl. have people forgotten that we were in the top five against the pass are line is good .well we do need a big fat guy in the middle to help with the run. but we really need is wideouts and corners . what are they thinking paying that much for a center ! when we need so much more. stupid

It’s been one day and all you buttheads are crying again, just like last year. Shut your piehole and let the boy’s do their job. Bye the way, maybe sign briggs and trade brooks for a 3rd or 4th round pick

The Bucs should be focusing more time in getting Crumpler, Hackett, Berrian or Moss in rather thn worrying about what next defensive player to bring in. All I heard after the loss to the Giants was “we need more playmkers on offense.” Poor Garcia had nobody to throw to all season long. Galloway isn’t getting any younger and who knows if Caddy will ever be the same again. So why isn’t this team out trying to sign great playmakers. Devery Henderson? Sure he’s good but he isn’t going to be te difference-maker the Bucs need. Someone please tell the Glazers that Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden are idiots!

I like Randall Gay but they shouldn’t overpay him. He would be a good fit in the Cover 2 system that doesn’t require a lot of man coverage. Faine is a good center but they spent way too much money. They need to land a WR, DT and CB’s. Why not Bernard Berrian or DJ Hackett? Who is our QB of the future? Don’t think Garcia will be able to stay healthy at 38

If Lance Briggs was commanding a lot of attention around the league (which, he isn’t), then I could see the concern about picking up another linebacker.  With the lack of teams seeking his services, the Bucs might be able to get him for a lot less then he’s worth.  Meaning, we could have 3 pro bowl caliber linebackers on the field even after Brooks retires.  Hopefully, we can turn him into a LB coach when he does finally hang it up.  I do agree that we need some help at receiver.  Why not spend money on a center?  Our current one was in his 30s and nearing the end of his career.  We got a younger guy in there who’s known to be very intelligent and athletic enough to block at the second level.

His jersey may not be a great seller, but a number of NE fans tell me that Randall Gay is a pretty solid CB. With Samuel and Florence gone, I’d like for us to scoop him up and then draft whomever they feel is the best CB still on the board. Even if we don’t land a FA, the draft provides plenty of insurance there.

WR, on the other hand, I don’t think we’ll find in this draft. I’d really like to see Hackett calling Tampa home next year.
