Newsome opens the Class 5A-Region 2 girls soccer tournament tonight at home to Land O’ Lakes with some extra motivation, according to midfielder Ana Cate.
Cate, who will play for Auburn next season, says the Wolves 3-2 loss to Lakeland George Jenkins in the region final of last season’s tournament still stings, and is providing extra motivation for the Wolves to get back to play the Eagles again.
“Even from the beginning of the season, George Jenkins has been on our minds just as much as Bloomingdale,” Cate said. “That loss last year really hurt, and it still hurts right now just thinking about it because we were so close.”
Jenkins went on to win the state title last season, and the Eagles have continued to build on that success. They won Class 5A-District 6 last week to move to 22-0-1 on the season, and are currently ranked No.2 in the ESPN Rise Fab 50 poll.
