TAMPA – Rudy Carpenter’s absence from the Buccaneers didn’t last long.
The third-team quarterback who was released Saturday when the Bucs pared their roster to the league’s 53-man limit was re-signed Monday to the practice squad along with two members of the Bucs 2011 draft class.
Safety Ahmad Black, a fifth round pick last April, and tight end Daniel Hardy, a seventh-round selection, were also re-signed to the practice squad, as was wide receiver and preseason standout Ed Gant.
“It wasn’t a tough decision for us,’’ Carpenter’s agent, Steve Feldman, said of Carpenter joining the practice squad. “Rudy likes the team and loves his teammate and he knows the system there.
“Despite the reality of the buinsse aspect of it all, the Buccaneers organization has treated Rudy really well and he’s looking forward to being with the Bucs for the next five or six years.’’
The Bucs also signed tackle Will Barker, tight end Colin Franklin, running back Mossis Madu and linebacker Derrell Smith to their practice squad. All four were with them at one point or another during training camp.
The Bucs also made two roster moves Monday, signing linebacker Zac Diles to a two-year contract and tight end Zack Pianalto. To make room for Diles and Pianalto the Bucs released cornerback Dominique “D.J.’’ Johnson and defensive lineman George Johnson.
Diles, a Kansas State product, first came to the league as a seventh-round draft pick of the Houston Texans in 2007. He has started 30 of the 39 games he’s played, mostly at outside linebacker, the last three years.
The 6-4, 250-pound Pianalto is a rookie who signed with Buffalo as an undrafted free agent out of the University of North Carolina, where he set a school record for most career receptions by a tight end with 94.
The Bills originally retained Pianalto on their 53-man roster, but released him on Sunday. The Buccaneers, who made successful waiver claims for running back LeGarrette Blount and guard Ted Larsen a year ago, then claimed him off waivers.
