University of South Florida wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Mike Canales said Tuesday he has not been contacted by Utah State about the Aggies’ coaching vacancy.
Canales is considered one of the favorites to replace fired Utah State coach Brent Guy, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Canales told me Tuesday he had no comment and had not been contacted by his alma mater. Canales is a 1984 graduate of Utah State, where he started three years at quarterback.
When Guy was hired in 2005, Canales, then an offensive coordinator at the University of Arizona, was a finalist for the Aggies job.
Canales has been at USF since 2007. He also was at USF from 1996-2000 as offensive coordinator before going to N.C. State (pass game coordinator, QBs coach 2001-02), New York Jets (WRs coach, 2003) and Arizona (offensive coordinator, 2004-06).
