The folks who visit this Shooting’ the Bull blog regularly appear thankful football season is back. So am I.
However, I do want to report a few non-football USF sports items before they get lost forever:
—Baseball coach Lelo Prado is close to announcing his next pitching coach. Prado had more than 50 applicants for the job vacated when Lazer Collazo left the program to return to his home in Miami.
—USF baseball recruit Kyle Waldrop, an outfielder drafted in the 12th round by the Reds in June’s amateur draft, has agreed to a $500,000 deal and won’t be joining the Bulls.
Click here to read about Waldrop, who is headed to Arizona today to join the Reds’ rookie camp.
—If you want to keep up with the USF men’s basketball team’s trip to Brazil for the inaugural Pan American University Championships—the Bulls defeated Colombia, 90-55, in their opener on Monday—you can check out freshman walk-on Jordan Heath’s blog by clicking here. Yes, if that name sounds familiar, he is head coach Stan Heath’s son.
—The USF men’s soccer team will open the 2010 season ranked No. 13 in the College Soccer News (CSN) preseason Top 30 poll and No. 16 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll. Click here to read USF’s official release.
—Speaking of soccer, the USF women’s team won an exhibition game at Miami on Monday, 2-1, behind a game-winning goal from Chelsea Klotz. The Bulls host the Mexican Junior National Team on Saturday night at 7:30 in their final preseason exhibition.
—OK, back to football. The Biletnikoff Award watch list was released today and two Big East players are on the list: Pittsburgh junior Jonathan Baldwin and Cincinnati senior Armon Binns.
—Finally, for those coming over to Vero Beach to attend any of USF’s football practices, a place you might want to check out is Bobby’s Restaurant and Lounge on Ocean Drive. Lots of sports fans there who are excited that USF is in town to bring Dodgertown back to life for a few days.
