Caddy Activated; Bennett Released

Posted Nov 12, 2008 by Anwar S. Richardson

Updated Nov 12, 2008 at 11:42 AM

Tampa Bay announced it has activated RB Cadillac Williams from the reserve physically unable to perform list and released RB Michael Bennett.

In addition, the Bucs activated WR Brian Clark from its practice squad and placed WR Maurice Stovall (hamstring) on injured reserve.

Williams sustained a season-ending knee injury last season against Carolina, and it was questionable whether he would play again. He entered the NFL as Tampa Bay’s first-round draft pick in 2005 and has played in 32 games. Williams has rushed for 2,184 yards on 569 carries and 10 TDs and has 53 receptions for 294 yards.

His return left Tampa Bay with too many running backs, and Bennett was the likely choice to be released. Bennett, a former Pro Bowler and first-round draft pick, had rushed seven times for 12 yards this season, plus has one reception for two yards. He was inactive in four games this season (New Orleans, Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas), which is far from what Bennett, 30, expected when he resigned with Tampa Bay last offseason.

On Monday, Bennett expressed his dissatisfaction with the organization and his lack of playing time to The Tampa Tribune.

“I really learned a lot from the beginning, to preseason to now. I’ve learned a lot. As far as the business and understanding it,” Bennett previously told The Tampa Tribune. “There are times when you don’t want to say you’re the forgotten man, but normally it’s like ‘Hey, hey, how are you doing?’ Now all of that kind of fades away.

“There are times you walk past people and they [members of the Bucs organization] don’t speak to you. Little things like that, those are the only things that really kind of bother me. Other than that, I understand the business and I see how it happens. I can see how guys can get frustrated and lose their minds and lose their temper, but I’m going to stay at peace with mine.”

This will mark Clark’s second appearance on the Bucs’ active roster this season.

He played in three games and has one reception for 12 yards and one kickoff return for 22 yards this year. Clark also had special two special teams tackles.

In addition, also signed LB Marc Magro to the practice squad. He has spent time with the Miami and St. Louis’ practice squads this season.

GOOD! not only to hear that our caddy is back. but soooooo glad to see maurice “king underachiever” stovall gone. this guy has been nothing but a bust since day one, and he will be let go in the offseason. we will replace him in the draft, and will probably be outshined by the new guy by the OTA’s. i hope maurice reads this too, maybe it will motivate him not to be a wasted spot on a team.

If the Bucs didn’t see something in Carnell Williams this would not have happened. I’ve heard a lot of doubters in #24 and I think this guy is gonna make it, Carnell Williams is driven. There was word that Bennett couldn’t learn the system after 12 months so he was let go. Bennett has a lot of talent but there is more to playing in the NFL than just raw talent. It’s gotta be the right fit in the right system for each player.

what a waste of a player.he was a solid back before comeing to the bucs and we let him collect dust.so now that willams is better they cut bennit?with dunn and grahm are hurt and caddilac healthy witch has yet to be seen at game speed and true game hits i do not think it was wise letting a good back go.in my oppinion willams should have stayed on the bench and then bring him back next season .history shows rb returning from those injurys allways seem to do better the 2nd season after than the first year after it happend.

How fast do the Denver Bronco’s grab Bennett off the waiver wire?  As short as they are on RB’s, he will probobly start for them the rest of the season!

Shawn in Greenville, be aware that while Stovall has not made much of an impact in the receiving game, he has been a STANDOUT on special teams, and has been sorely missed there. Stovall is a true professional, a class act, and he’s not going anywhere.

michael rigney, “he was a solid back before coming to bucs”? We were his third team(all of which released, traded, or never resigned) and he was only a starter his first couple of years. I know he has issues with blocking packages/picking up blitzes but, I also believe he must not have practiced well.

I’m a real good friend with Mike Bennett and this just delivers me another reason why I think the Bucs organization has no class. A great guy that can ply in this league, you sign him to this and then you release him for damaged goods. It’s another sad day in Tampa Bay, and another reason why I have lost alot of respect for the organization. I am a Bucs fan and will alway’s be but another move by that whatever’s name is Jon WHO?

It’s idiotic to suggest that Michael Bennett did not make the most of his opportunity.  What opportunity?  Do you mean his 7 carries this year?  It seems that if a player doesn’t worship at the Gruden altar he is relegated to the bench.  Ask Mike Alstott.

Bennet has to go to let the Cadillac run the show.  Sorry about the rhyme but is true.  As far as Stovall goes he is the stud on Special Teams and he will be missed.

Carnell Shmarnell, you “Pinto” luvin, blinder wearing morons,he’s nothing more than trade bait,he’s done.
we now have to put perfume on poop and see what we can get for him if anything,it’s gonna happen, when? not sure.
he should have never been here,we drafted nothing but one big injury.
he’s been out for over a year,do the math.
Oh wait,I forgot, Gruden is a Genius.
he’ll make it all better.

but roy in this league you have to make the most out of the chances you get and i dont care how many carries it is. it can be 2 carries 3 carries, what have you, you have to shine. with us having a deep backfield we cant play the waiting game, and sit around for one player to come around. gruden needs guys who can grasp things quickly even more so for bennet because he was a vet. caddy knows the offense dunn got ahold of it quickly and grahm speaks for hiself. askew and stoer were the FB’s and clifton smith made the most of his opportunity. which leaves bennet the odd man out! this is a business first, and bennet didn’t fall into our future plans becasue he had a lack of production! GO BUCS!

Rob, please tell me when Gruden delegated Alstott to the bench(besides due to injury). People forget Alstott had his best td scoring year (10 tds and a ring to prove it)under Gruden.

If Bennett goes to team like Denver and becomes another Thomas Jones, some of you need to prepare yourselves for the “I told you so”.

The problem with Cadillac(s) isn’t performance or comfort but reliability.

Fred Fred Fred “Becomes another T. Jones”? Bennett was released(BTW: we were his 4th team of which either released(twice) or traded him). T Jones signed for more money with Bears(who traded him to Jets, hmmm?) So I’m not sure what you are saying?

The last time I checked, the Buc’s were making a strong run for a second NFC South title in two years.  Many in Tampa forgot that Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen had to clean up the Tony Dungy-Rick McKay salary cap MESS. Dungy did not build that team that won the Superbowl, Sam Wyche did, he drafted Warren Sapp, Brookes, Alstott & Lynch.  I love Tony Dungy and I think he is a GREAT coach and a GREAT man. That Said: Jon Gruden is BY FAR the BEST COACH THE BUC’s HAVE EVER HAD.

And Mike Allstot had his BEST year ever under Gruden, who got him well after his prime. How can Gruden be thrown under the bus by cutting Bennett, who was an average player at best and activating a player who was one of the best players on the team? Geeeezzzzz. My have we become spoiled in Tampa. From the posts, I thought the Buc’s were 0-9 instead of 6-3

Stovall is terrible?  He’s the best tackler we had on special teams.  His receiving could use some work.  On the other hand, he was never utilized much in the passing game.  We never saw what Bennett could do.  He didn’t argue with Gruden or anything, so that wasn’t the problem.  He was either too dumb to learn the playbook or unable to execute plays to Gruden’s satisfaction.  I thought he should get more of a chance, but I’m not the coach.  I don’t know why so many are complaining now.  He didn’t ever do anything for us.  He was never going to get much of a chance so who cares?

I thought Bennett had a lot left in his tank and maybe not—-I think if you look back that Thomas Jones wanted too much money

I really really hope Cadillac is back and can get it on! His type of knee injury would end some players’ careers.

Caddy with a new and improved o-line might be something special. Go Bucs!

Cadillac is garbage. He hasnt done anything since his rookie year. He is just another one of the buccaneers typical busts. I say trade him and get a second or third round draft pic for him.

Por (matt) on November 12, 2008 (Suggest removal)

The thing I question is that Caddy is a total mystery at this point. Is he physically or mentally ready and we have to find out in games that count and not preseason games.  This wasnt just an acl or pcl injury it was way worse.  Hard to see regardless of rehab that he has made it all the way back in a year.

aww man, bad move. You can never have enough RB’s. Just look at the Donco’s.
Too bad Bennett started crying like a baby, or else he’d still be on the team. Why did he resign with the team when he knew the depth at RB?
