Bulls win: Final thoughts

A win is a win. That was the message USF coach Skip Holtz was preaching after the Bulls squeaked past visiting Western Kentucky, 24-12, on Saturday night.

While the Bulls might not have blown out the team with the nation’s longest losing streak, they were able to get back into the win column for the first time since a season-opening victory over Stony Brook.

But, the question is, are you as fans satisfied with the performance?

There were some obvious positives. The ground game was strong again, building off solid performances against Stony Brook and Florida. Demetris Murray (15 carries, 115 yards) and Mo Plancher (17 carries, 79 yards) formed a pretty good one-two punch Saturday night. The defense also played solid for the most part, and managed to slow Western Kentucky running back Bobby Rainey (21 carries, 64 yards), something no other team had done this season.

There also were some areas for concern. The kicking game struggled, with Eric Schwartz missing two field-goal attempts before giving way to Maikon Bonani, who converted his try after getting a favorable bounce off the upright. And the passing game didn’t contribute much. While the Bulls only attempted 11 passes, this Western Kentucky team was ripe for the picking (the Hilltoppers yielded an averaged of 296 yards per game through the air entering Saturday’s matchup) and USF’s longest pass play went for 17 yards and quarterback B.J. Daniels was sacked a season-high three times.

Anyways, feel free to chime in with what you took away from the Bulls’ latest victory.

D was fantastic….I get the feeling we will win many low scoring games because the D will keep us in the game.  O-line will be dominating all year and T-Rex is the real-deal.

What happened to our kicking game?  That was a surprise.

That was one sloppy win!  I was very impressed with the run game….Murray has to be the starter, no one else does anything until he presses the issue and makes the other backs work harder.  He doesn’t hit the hole too fast, he is patient and then turns on the jets when he needs to.  Great potential.  I love the use of the FB.

The passing game is scary….WRs are not the best and sometimes BJ just doesn’t seem to be progressing in his reads.  The INT was on him not reading the coverage….if he throws it toward the sideline it doesn’t get picked.  Stephen B-B is as sure handed as they come….he could be the guy in 3-down.  I don’t want to be too critical of the O, I know it is young and inexperienced….so the future looks good.

If we are going to have a problem in the kicking game then it’s better to have in in this game than in a conference game.  Hopefully, we will have that straigntened out by conference play. Sounds like we will be getting some help back at wide receiver shortly. Again we need improvement there by the time we start conference play. Ground game is looking good, didn’t even know we had a full-back. Offensive line and T-Rex are fantastic and the defense is very impressive. Just need to iron out a few things then look-out!
