Can it get any worse?

When the first quarter between the University of South Florida and Rutgers ended, the Scarlet Knights sprinted to the other end of the field. They couldn’t wait for the second quarter to begin.

The Bulls? They can’t wait for the season to end.

They slowly walked with their heads down toward the south end zone of Raymond James Stadium. Their season officially came to a crawl Saturday as Rutgers routed USF 49-16.

With 16 days since their last game, the Bulls managed one point for every day of preparation they had. Since that last game, the seniors called a players’ only meeting and USF coach Jim Leavitt required his staff to work Sunday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to midnight during the off week.

The result was USF’s worst home loss in allowing the fourth-most points and suffering the fifth-biggest margin of defeat in program history.

“Our football team certainly is down,” Leavitt said. “About as down as you can get.”

USF (6-4, 1-4 Big East) has lost four of its last five, its worst five-game stretch since the 2004 team had a 1-4 stretch and finished 4-7. The Bulls also are guaranteed their worst Big East record since joining the league.

USF trailed 21-10 at halftime, but had outgained Rutgers 205-126. However, in the second half the Bulls looked like they did in their Sun Bowl blowout loss to Oregon – not good.

Rutgers outscored USF 28-6 after halftime, rolling up 295 yards of offense. For the game, quarterback Mike Teel threw for 294 yards and three TDs, including a 92-yard touchdown to Kenny Britt (eight catches, 173 yards).

“We got our tails beat pretty bad in the second half, they owned us,” USF defensive coordinator Wally Burnham said.

USF junior wide receiver Jessie Hester had a career-best 10 catches for 110 yards as the Bulls finished with 404 yards offense. USF only punted twice, but couldn’t overcome six turnovers. Quarterback Matt Grothe threw for 292 yards, but was intercepted three times. The Bulls also lost three fumbles.

“I really felt like what we were doing was the right way to move the football,” USF offensive coordinator Greg Gregory said. “We were moving it and giving ourselves an opportunity to score, but we just kind of shot ourselves in the foot with some fundamental mistakes.”

Besides the six turnovers, the Bulls committed 10 penalties for 100 yards, missed a field goal, had one blocked and allowed a 59-yard kickoff return.
USF’s coaches and players said they don’t know what’s gone wrong with the Bulls, who were once 5-0 and ranked No. 10 in the nation.

“I’ve wondered the same thing one hundred thousand times,” said Grothe, who left with a sprained left ankle and was wearing a boot afterward. “We can’t catch a break with anything. It feels like the world’s after us.”

USF defensive end George Selvie also had no answers.

“We just didn’t lose, we got whupped,” Selvie said. “I couldn’t even tell you [what’s wrong], I don’t know what’s going on. We got talent, so that’s not it. I don’t know how to explain it.

“We’re giving up some big plays, the whole team, we’re messing up everywhere, but we don’t know why we’re messing up. We’re able to make those plays, but not doing them.

“It’s not fun, it’s ridiculous.”

Once considered a lock for the inaugural St. Pete Bowl, the Bulls could actually miss out on a bowl game by losing their final two games to UConn and West Virginia.

In the first year of his new seven-year, $12.6 million contract, Leavitt said the Bulls’ late season slide can be attributed to injuries and lack of continuity.

“If I’m going to be honest and really honest, that’s what I really think is a big part [injuries], but coaches don’t like to make excuses because people don’t like to hear them,” Leavitt said. “But the truth of the matter is we got a lot of guys banged up.

“The most disappointing thing was we stopped competing in the second half. That’s the first time I’ve seen our team do that in a long time. Why, again, I don’t know. I really don’t know. We’ll try to figure it out.”

Playing before an announced crowd of 47,216, the stadium was one-fourth filled with red-clad Rutgers fans (oh wait, sorry, those were empty chair backs). Leavitt’s face was as bright red as those empty seats at the end of the second quarter.

After a catch by Carlton Mitchell, Leavitt went ballistic after the officials didn’t hear him calling for a time out with nine seconds remaining. The officials finally stopped the clock with four seconds remaining, but Maikon Bonani’s 54-yard field goal was blocked on the final play of the half.

“I was hoping to get a time out,” Leavitt said. “I was calling a time out with nine seconds left, but [the official] didn’t hear me, maybe because I’ve lost my voice.

“But I was screaming as hard as I could scream.”

The way the season is coming to an end, apparently the Bulls have tuned Leavitt out as well.

Where has our Matt Grothe gone?  In the last 3 games he has thrown 8 interceptions and 3 TD’s.  In the first 7 games he threw 12 TD’s and 3 interceptions.  Have the Big East defensive coordinators totally figured him out or is something else going on?  That is an amazing drop off.  At one point this season he was on some Heisman watch lists.

First of all, that’s a good crowd considering our Big East record so far and Rutgers’ record.  There is no need to throw that comment in there about empty seats.

Secondly, there is no need to put in Leavitt’s contract as if you are trying to get him fired because he’s being payed too much.  What the hell does his contract have to do with the losing against Rutgers?  Nothing.

Thirdly, Carlton Mitchell was out of bounds after that catch so the clock shouldn’t have even been running.  The refs should have done a better job there.

Lastly, why put yet another jab in there about how the bulls have tuned Leavitt out.  Really?  Is that your assessment?  Is that what the players are saying?

LACK OF DISCIPLIN! LACK OF EFFORT! OUTCOACHED AGAIN!I AM BEGINNING TO BELIEVE CJL IS NOT THE ANSWER. WELL COACHED TEAMS PLAY BETTER AS THE YEAR GOES BY, USF ALWAYS PLAYS WORSE. THIS GAME WAS HARD TO WATCH. CAN’T BELIEVE THEY MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES GAME AFTER GAME.ONLY ANSWER IS NOT PREPARED WHICH IS A REFLECTION OF COACHING.PLAYERS & COACHES SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THE EFFORT!

Aren’t there laws about requiring employees to work 16 hour shifts for four consecutive days?  OSHA stop this madness!  Seriously though, that’s a long day.  Maybe there’s a bit of burnout going on with the coaching staff.  Are we going to see 3 more assistants leaving in the off-season?  Reading between the lines on past blog entries, there is burnout with the assistants.  If so, CJL needs to hire assistants with the same O.C.D. that he shares.

Jim needs to realize that what he is doing is NOT working. Continuing to do the same thing over and over but expecting different results is known as INSANITY….

OCD?? maybe not… but certainly wrapped TOO tight.

The coaches are not preparing this team to be mentally ready to play football.

We need to use 1 RB almost exclusively.

The long waits between games is maddening.  It is hard on the fans and the players are not into the games.  We have at least 3 periods of two weeks or more without playing.  There is the lack of continuity.  Leavitt’s poor excuse of injuries is absurd.

GROTHE NEEDS TO SIT THE NEXT GAME.  USF CANNOT DO ANY WORSE THAN 4 STRAIGHT LOSSES.  THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO GIVE THIS TEAM A WAKE UP CALL.

There, I said it, I know that nobody will agree.

The coaches have gotten complacent. They got big raises while the rest of USF’s faculty has gotten the shaft. USF can go to some used car parts or old pizza bowl in the Big East every year, so have no incentive to perform better.

I am watching FSU who is jeopardizing their chance against BC because they hold their players to standards. After the Ben Moffitt thing, where they set him up to be a hero when he was anything but, it is obvious these upstarts won’t hold any standards or integrity.

Excuses are for losers. Whether you want to tell us them or not, they are still in the back of your mind. When you have an excuse to lose, you will do just that. We are not mentally prepared. Obviously Leavitt feels his backups aren’t very good and it reflects in the way they play. He shows no confidence in them and they believe him to be right. Try and build a guy up. Confidence in oneself can lead to amazing things.

Allen…if you were at the game, you realize that there was nowhere near 47,000 at the game today….maybe closer to 28-30K….the student section was half full…if that..it was embarrassing…horrible turnout for a horrible effort by the Bulls and their coaches.  This team has clearly quit on the fans, students, alumni, coaches, and themselves. I hope to be proved wrong next week…I will be there…apparently by myself.

USF needs to return to Conference USA and “renew” the rivalry with UCF. They are in over their head, and are embarrassing themselves.

Composure…

You need not look any further than CJL to know why this team is in a tailspin.

He looses it during the game and his team follows him.

You guys should hire Mr. Coach Cline with his green playbook.

The effort today was horrific. I’ve been to all but four home games in USF’s history and this has to be the worst performance I have seen. This is the most uninspired and unprepared team in USF history.

Selvie: “You” know what the problem is: you guys don’t care and it shows.

47,000? Try 25,000. At the 5 minute mark of the 4th qtr I think there were more Rutgers fans than USF fans. Yes, I stayed for Gregory’s pathetic end.

I hope the boys pull whatever dignity and respect they have left out of their ##### or they will once AGAIN be embarrassed on national tv vs UConn.

I agree that Matt Growth has to sit. Let the BJ Daniels era begin. I was stunned that Growth played after his Int was returned for a TD.

Pathetic. Grothe needs to go.  Gregory needs to be fired.  Leavitt needs to rethink things.  I’ve never thought Grothe was that special.  Just a kid who gets lucky from time to time.  Now the competition’s got his number and his luck has ran out.  Sorry buddy.

I am a UCF fan. Last year I pulled for USF when thay were ranked #2 in the nation. My thinking was that they would bring respect to themselves and to us, and show the nation that there are other top ranked football schools in the state. After the way that USF arrogantly brushed our UCF program aside, I am glad that USF is the doormat of the Big East. Have fun as the “patsy” of the Big East boys!

Com’on Leo

Grothe is the ONLY playmaker this team has.  Thats the problem, the defenses are keying on him and there’s no one else.  I’m not saying he’s great, he’s just the best they have right now.

All you guys need to realize that the defense sucks and that our offense is to one dimensional, AKA easy to game plan against.

The talent is not that good and leadership on this team just doesn’t exist.

Discipline and accountablity are lacking and when things start to go wrong (as we have witnessed now for 2 seasons) the coach and his team looses its composure.

CJL has got to get his own personal act together, does he not realize that he sets the tone and and is the example they follow?

Bye Bye Jim. You did all you could for this program. Now we need a coach to take us to the next level. Running sprints around RAY JAY and doing Cheerleading drills before the game were fine years ago. But you have done your time here. Can anyone say Lane Kiffen?

Quick question?

Anyone seen Amp Hill #9?  That guy is an amazing athlete and Gregory cannot get him the ball once!  The only time he touched it was on a kickoff return.

If you are a four star athlete and are looking at USF why would you want to come here?  You’ll never be “the man” with Gregory in the box.  If Kenny Britt was on this team he would have about 15 catches for the year.

Fire Gregory now!

Por (Don G) on November 15, 2008 (Suggest removal)

I’ve blamed Gregory for poor play-calling & lack of a creative game plan; however, offense did produce 404 yds. Yeah, most of that was between the 30s, but they moved the ball today. Although, yards mean nothing if you can’t score, and that’s problem with offense. Again, penalties killed drives & ruined momentum. To be fair, hard to blame Gregory for fumbles &  those interceptions. I’m one of Gregory’s harshest critics, but nothing went Bulls way today. During 16-days off, should have helped heal injured? But based on Leavitt’s comments, apparently they’re still hurting since FIU and there’s no depth on this team.  Hopefully they get B.J. Daniels some playing time next year?

Por (Joe) on November 15, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Yeah, I agree with some of the guys here that Gregory should be let go and maybe BJ Daniels needs to get a shot in leading the offense. Heck, he should’ve been in today for a series or two (for Grothe to get his head together).

We did/do have plenty of injuries. But that solely isn’t the main reason why we stink. Also, I wish the media would stop ranking us so high and giving us so many props because, when loses like this mount, we look like fools.

John Z, re: USF-UCF series, yeah, I didn’t think it was a good idea for USF to dump that rivalry.  Not sure why, but seems odd that USF wants to play those Sun Belt powers (joke) FIU or FAU in 2009, 2010 & 2013 (so far) verses a better UCF program?  Guess USF feels they need to play additional Sun Belt teams like W. KY (2009 & 2010) and play more 1-AA Southern Conference teams like Wofford next year. BTW, I went to Wofford, so I’ll be happy to see them play here, but really, why is USF playing 1-AA teams anyway. I think it hurts a 1-A program more than helps when playing those type games.

continued…

I think CJL should have two more years to get us to the Big East title. If he doesn’t by that time then USF needs to seriously consider another head coach (because we can’t keep spending tons of $$ on our football program and have it not reach a BE title/BCS bowl game).

Overall, I thought we’d be like a Boise State by now…meaning, we would be a serious newcomer hanging in the upper-ranked football landscape. Alas, it hasn’t happened and it’s just terrible, mainly, because I feel our players could compete at a higher level (then they’re showing now).

It’s all just damn ridiculous for this to be happening two years in a row. (*shakeshead*)

Joe, re: Daniels playing this year, you may recall that B.J. got hurt & USF is trying to obtain a medical redshirt for him this year to allow Daniels to remain a freshman.  With the season going as it is now, why waste one year of eligibility on Bulls future QB?  Best if Grant Gregory stays as backup and they prep Daniels to share QB duties with Grothe next year & maybe get Daniels some starts after mid-season next yr as well.

Suggest removal

Por (Joe) on November 16, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Don, that’s right I forgot about the medical redshirt for Daniels.

I just thought the coaches would think of SOME solution, during the game, to salvage this season and hopefully take the team to a bowl game.

Oh well…we just aren’t as good as some people thought we were? OR is it injuries (of a one-deep team)? OR coaches and their coaching? OR…

It’s just a damn shame.

It really sucks to follow this team since their inception and have this crap happen.

Por (Don G) on November 16, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Brett, I think disappointment & frustration are key words to describe USF this year. I’m not 100% sure it’s Leavitt or due to lack of salary for his assistants which promotes poor quality assistants or the huge amount of injuries so far this year? Leavitt supporters say he has taken Bulls to 1-A level & a BCS conference. I say, Bulls planned to move up to 1-A & any coach that was there could have ridden that wave. 8-8 in 2-yrs of C-USA play & 13-13 in 4 seasons of BE play (so far) is not a record that demands loyalty or support!
