TALLAHASSEE - USF freshman QB B.J. Daniels has thrown a pair of touchdown passes leading the Bulls to a 14-0 halftime lead against No. 18 Florida State.
Making his first start for injured senior Matt Grothe, Daniels hit Ben Busbee for 8 yards and Sterling Griffin for 73 yards.
Daniels finished the first half 4-for-9 for 166 yards and two TDs, while carrying 10 times for 87 yards before 83,524, the 11th largest crowd in Doak Campbell Stadium history.
In the first quarter, both teams failed to convert scoring opportunities. After an FSU fumble, USF’s Eric Schwartz was wide left on a 37-yard field goal. The Seminoles had a first-and-goal at the 3, but the Bulls stopped the Seminoles on two runs inside the 2.
Daniels then drove the Bulls 99 yards in five plays – the big play a 77-yard pass to Theo Wilson to the FSU 8 – giving the Bulls a 7-0 lead.
USF’s defense came up big again, forcing an FSU fumble inside USF’s 10. Sabbath Joseph caused the fumble and Kion Wilson returned it to USF’s 27.
On the next play, Daniels hit Griffin, who was wide open down the USF sideline, for his second TD pass, making it 14-0.
USF failed to capitalize on another scoring opportunity when Schwartz missed a 37-yard field goal with four seconds left in the first half.

USF has played like a team wanting to prove they belong in the same breath as other high tier Florida college programs. They’re laying out big hits, causing turnovers, Daniels is so far playing to his full potential, and the defensive line has Ponder running all over the place to try to escape the rush. Many of these players were never even given a look by FSU. USF as a program has had several big wins, but this is different, this is Florida State.
