To accommodate West Virginia’s “White Out” – or is it “Whiteout” – plans for Saturday, honoring the final home game for WVU senior QB Pat White, the University of South Florida will wear its green home jerseys while the Mountaineers will wear their white road uniforms.
NCAA rules specify that home teams wear dark uniforms and visitors wear white or light colored jerseys, but West Virginia petitioned the NCAA to allow the jersey color switch. USF agreed to the jersey switch.
It’s believed to be the first time USF will wear its green home jerseys for a road game, said former USF SID John Gerdes, who was with the school when the program first began.
Ironically, USC coach Pete Carroll said the Trojans will wear their cardinal red home jerseys for Saturday’s road game in the Rose Bowl against UCLA, which will wear their blue and goal home jerseys. That violates an NCAA rule requiring visiting teams to wear white. The infraction will cost USC a timeout at the start of the game.
However, UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel supports both teams wearing their home jerseys and said the Bruins will call a timeout immediately after USC’s to even it out.
There will be no loss of timeouts in the West Virginia-USF game since both teams are not wearing their home jerseys.
West Virginia is encouraging its fans to wear white No. 5 T-shirts and some local businesses are selling White’s No. 5 white T-shirts for $5. However, with temperatures expected to be near freezing Saturday night, it’s unknown how many will have those T-shirts over their coats.
White holds 16 WVU, Big East and NCAA records.
“This senior class has done much more than any other senior class, and we just happened to be led by a guy named White,” WVU coach Bill Stewart told the West Virginia media on Tuesday. “Pat White, No. 5, the greatest winner in college football, would not be one iota without 18 brothers who have helped him along the journey.
“Those 19 seniors are why we’re having a ‘White-Out.’ Pat White isn’t the reason. It’s Pat White who is at the head of the class, and the entire pyramid that has helped him become what he has become.
“So our senior class would not want it any other way. This is not a one-man show. This is not a one-man outfit. It is not a one-man story. This is a story about 18 brothers who are lifting up a 19th who happens to have the last name of White. Our senior class absolutely loves No. 5, and this is for all of them.”

Simon, thanks. You’re right. I’ll correct that.

Brett don’t you mean USF will wear their HOME green jerseys not the road green as printed in your article? Green white who cares, actually the darker jerseys will be a little warmer! Seriously, it will be a tough challenge since USF typically doesn’t play well in cold weather.

2005 Pat White ran for 177 yards and two touchdowns
2006 White finished 14-of-22 for 178 yards and ran for just 17 yards on 15 carries
2007 White completed 12 of 18 passes for 100 yards and was intercepted once. He ran a little, but was knocked out of the game around halftime
But I don’t know what to expect from our guys in that weather

Darryl, no offense taken...I was just joking around. Bring a coat though, it’s gonna be COLD this weekend!

Brett, according to the Times West Virginian (www.timeswv.com/wvu_sports/local_story_338024000.html), WVA plans on running Pat White against us all night: “Prove you can run on South Florida and you have them beat and to run on them you need White as the featured runner.” That sounds like a really bad plan; I don’t think we’re that bad against the run, and I don’t recall White doing much damage that way in the past. Sure, he got his yards, but our defense usually stopped him from having too much success. What kind of game would you foresee?

Nabeel, no offense; I’m FROM there. Catching a nephew’s baptism and a quick holiday visit, but didn’t wanna miss the game.

Darryl, while we may be in territory where it’s borderline ok to marry your sister (and Hamilton is even closer to Kentucky than Dayton), even WE get ESPN2 up here.

Pat White will suffer SOME sort of injury if they start to lose, then he will stage his miraculous recovery to show how gutsy he is and return to the game, “playing through the pain.” Is he a theater major? I like how their coach called him “the greatest winner in college football” I think he meant Greatest Whiner. Can he be the greatest winner in college football if he’s never beaten USF? Time for the Bulls to make a statement.

I agree: let’s KNOCK WHITE OUT on Saturday. WVA has a lot in its favor: it will be really cold and windy and even worse as a night game on the road - not USF’s best playing conditions. Weather: Advantage WVA. Home Field: Advantage WVA. Selvie: advantage USF.
I think our seniors can muster one more beat down on Pat White before he tries playing on Sundays.
Nabeel, I will be in nearby Hamilton, OH, for this weeks game. Hope they get ESPN2 up there.

A Whiteout?
WE’RE DOOOOMED!

If history repeats itself, USF will once again knock Pat WHITE OUT of the game. He’ll bruise a shin or something and sit out the rest of the game as usual. It’s just too bad that Steve Slaton won’t be there to fumble and be ineffective as well.

I read an interview of Coach Stewart, and he’s determined to use his newfound FB to join Devine & Sanders in pounding the run the “last two games”. It’s a chess match, so who knows if they’ll come out throwing. But it’ll be cold, and that rock will bounce of WR’s hands. If we put 8 in the box and stuff the lanes, we can smother White. No missed tackles...and gang tackle. He’s slight of build, and we can pound him. GO BULLS!!! I’ll have my green USF sweatshirt & layers of Bull shirts!
