Tampa’s Gary Buffington III earned victory at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour under-19 event at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City with a two-round total of 147, one shot ahead of Mark Sanchez of Mississauga, Ontario and Chandler Vilcheck of Bluffton, S.C.
It was Buffington’s first victory on the Hurricane Tour, and looked a long way away after he opened with a 76 to put him four shots behind. Buffington, a student at Chamberlain, bounced back to post a 71 on the second day, his eight birdies over the weekend a tournament-high.
Palm Harbor’s Aaron Watson finished in a tie for ninth place with a total of 155, while Tyler White, also from Palm Harbor, finished in a tie for 18th with a total of 160.
Tampa’s Robby Eisch also earned victory in the Under-12 division, shooting the only sub-80 round with a 79 on the second day as he finished with a total of 167, eight shots ahead of Zong Fan Li of China who finished second.
