TAMPA – Never one to pass on the opportunity to look at a free agent, especially a free-agent quarterback, the Bucs met with quarterback Daunte Culpepper on Thursday, Bucs officials confirmed.
The Bucs met with Culpepper, 30, just two days after the Dolphins finally gave him the release he had been seeking since they acquired Trent Green six weeks ago.
The Bucs wouldn’t appear on the surface to have a pressing need for Culpepper, because they currently have seven quarterbacks, including Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms and Bruce Gradkowski, on their roster.
However, Simms has struggled with his throwing mechanics since returning to the field following spleen surgery and Gradkowski seems to need more seasoning after struggling through most of his rookie season last year.
It is also growing increasingly obvious that Jake Plummer will not be in camp when the Bucs begin training for the 2007 season next week at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex.
An associate of Plummer’s agent, David Dunn, did not want to comment on the matter Thursday but indicated that little has changed with Plummer, who has vowed to retire.
Culpepper, a former University of Central Florida standout who had his best years with the Minnesota Vikings and who serves as his own agent, could not be reached for comment.
Culpepper, who joined the Dolphins as a free agent last summer, fell out of favor in Miami almost immediately upon his arrival when it became apparent that the knee injury he suffered the year before had robbed him of his mobility.
He was sacked 21 times in his first four games as the Dolphins starter and didn’t see the field again as the Dolphins turned first to Joey Harrington and then Cleo Lemon as replacements.

I say sign him up to backup Garcia. The other qb’s could battle for third qb. If Culpepper does sign that would be a leadership at that important position.
This is what I would do.1. Trade plummer rights to one team that could use his services. Put Simms on IR. or trade him. Maybe that young qb from Neb or Toledo could be the 3rd qb. Also check around before training camp to see if they would be any takers for simms services. Then if get some help for a draft pick for 2008 draft. Then tampa can get down with qb’s set.

We don’t need yet another QB running around Tampa and why would any quaterback want to come to Tampa with the fact that not a single starter has played ever game in years even Brad Johnson misses the last few game before the playoffs. I really think that Bruce Gradkowski is thw answer it didn’t help him being throwin into the fire last year. I see him as a Big Ben small school and determined to be a great QB in the NFL. Many Quaterbacks have done bad there first year Peyton 2or3 wins Troy the same.

Right, like Brad Culpepper at a stealth 198lbs could suit up and play, of all positions, NOSE tackle, paleeeze. I love the idea of having Daunte here, I was bummed we chose Booger over him at the time, but here we have a chance again and I hope he ends up sticking because he would not be far from a starter if Garcia goes down, which isn’t a stretch, he could be heaving those long passes to Joey Galloway, the more I think about it, the more I like it.

Yeah, he’d be a great fit, at the right price. The Bucs can’t afford to pay their top three QB’s starter money. Garcia, 37, is not a long-term plan and Simms, although I love him, dosen’t sound ready to compete for a starting job or even the backup job. That would leave the Bucs in the same position as last year, with Gradkowski being the main backup. Yuck! No thank you. I would rather bite the bullet and sign Culpepper for three years and say, $5-$8 million.

I read this story with excitement, because I thought it was going to say Brad Culpepper....void(0);
grin
That would have been a great story. From the field to the courtroom back to the field again for one last hurrah.
