TAMPA – Never one to pass on the opportunity to look at a free agent, especially a free-agent quarterback, the Bucs met with quarterback Daunte Culpepper on Thursday, Bucs officials confirmed.
The Bucs met with Culpepper, 30, just two days after the Dolphins finally gave him the release he had been seeking since they acquired Trent Green six weeks ago.
The Bucs wouldn’t appear on the surface to have a pressing need for Culpepper, because they currently have seven quarterbacks, including Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms and Bruce Gradkowski, on their roster.
However, Simms has struggled with his throwing mechanics since returning to the field following spleen surgery and Gradkowski seems to need more seasoning after struggling through most of his rookie season last year.
It is also growing increasingly obvious that Jake Plummer will not be in camp when the Bucs begin training for the 2007 season next week at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex.
An associate of Plummer’s agent, David Dunn, did not want to comment on the matter Thursday but indicated that little has changed with Plummer, who has vowed to retire.
Culpepper, a former University of Central Florida standout who had his best years with the Minnesota Vikings and who serves as his own agent, could not be reached for comment.
Culpepper, who joined the Dolphins as a free agent last summer, fell out of favor in Miami almost immediately upon his arrival when it became apparent that the knee injury he suffered the year before had robbed him of his mobility.
He was sacked 21 times in his first four games as the Dolphins starter and didn’t see the field again as the Dolphins turned first to Joey Harrington and then Cleo Lemon as replacements.

THis is simple. Does anybody remember Jay fiedler? A good qb with an injury issue from miami? Sounds like De ja vu…but withthe qb position really lacking any true talent, why not. What have we got to lose besides games, money and fans? We’ve already lost respect. Bump Obamam….Culpepper 2008 lol
Suggest removalDon’t get excited. No real good qb’s in the upcoming draft either. “Calling all qb’s who can’t get work anywhere else. Tampa is on the look out…..and I’m done with my rant.

What this shows me is: Chuckie isn’t happy with his backups, including Simms. From that perspective, I agree. He was banking on the cry baby Plummer to MAN UP and toss his crying towel to the sideline. He didn’t and probably isn’t. Playing a complete season 20+ games, (if they go to the playoffs), sans injury is inconceivable in this day and age. So who do you want to rely on: Simms? Nope! Graduatordowski? Nope! So he’s shopping for someone in whom he has confidence. Personally, it the guys gams are healed, it’s not a bad idea. I just don’t see the Bucs paying Culpepper what he thinks he’s worth.

After reading this article, it’s very clear to me that if Culpepper was pulled from the Miami start last season due to a knee injury why in the world would Gruden even be entertaining the idea of bringing him to Tampa? His injury apparently didn’t work with the Miami Dolphins so why take that chance? It seems that Gruden has completely torn the Bucs apart and maybe, just maybe Gruden may have to be released in order to get the Bucs to the SuperBowl again. Just a thought.

Teresa, best case scenario, that type of knee injury takes two years to heal. Culpepper was injured late, (Oct.30 ‘05), in the previous season and wanted more money. This guy was a 3 time Pro Bowler and threw for 4,700 yards in ‘04, was barely beaten out for MVP by Peyton Manning. That year, he threw for 39 touchdowns and only 11 INT’s. After his injury, with Brad Johnson playing well, he asked to be dealt to Miami, who took a chance on him; but the timing was bad because of the slow healing injury. IF he’s ever going to be ready, it would be now. I think some of the pundits who wrote on it this weekend are correct: if the Bucs sign Culpepper, look for Simms to be on the trading block.

Culpepper may be intriquing but that is about it. His knee is not fully healthy and we need a health stable of qb’s. I think Garcia will play well but I think Gradowski will be a good quarterback soon. Simms should be traded or released. He doesn’t fit the system either.

Give Culpepper a shot! Is the best QB in the market-worth the risk!
