TAMPA – Never one to pass on the opportunity to look at a free agent, especially a free-agent quarterback, the Bucs met with quarterback Daunte Culpepper on Thursday, Bucs officials confirmed.
The Bucs met with Culpepper, 30, just two days after the Dolphins finally gave him the release he had been seeking since they acquired Trent Green six weeks ago.
The Bucs wouldn’t appear on the surface to have a pressing need for Culpepper, because they currently have seven quarterbacks, including Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms and Bruce Gradkowski, on their roster.
However, Simms has struggled with his throwing mechanics since returning to the field following spleen surgery and Gradkowski seems to need more seasoning after struggling through most of his rookie season last year.
It is also growing increasingly obvious that Jake Plummer will not be in camp when the Bucs begin training for the 2007 season next week at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex.
An associate of Plummer’s agent, David Dunn, did not want to comment on the matter Thursday but indicated that little has changed with Plummer, who has vowed to retire.
Culpepper, a former University of Central Florida standout who had his best years with the Minnesota Vikings and who serves as his own agent, could not be reached for comment.
Culpepper, who joined the Dolphins as a free agent last summer, fell out of favor in Miami almost immediately upon his arrival when it became apparent that the knee injury he suffered the year before had robbed him of his mobility.
He was sacked 21 times in his first four games as the Dolphins starter and didn’t see the field again as the Dolphins turned first to Joey Harrington and then Cleo Lemon as replacements.

I read this story with excitement, because I thought it was going to say Brad Culpepper….void(0);
Suggest removalgrin
That would have been a great story. From the field to the courtroom back to the field again for one last hurrah.
Por (Tyler Ellrodt) on July 19, 2007 (Suggest removal)
Yeah, he’d be a great fit, at the right price. The Bucs can’t afford to pay their top three QB’s starter money. Garcia, 37, is not a long-term plan and Simms, although I love him, dosen’t sound ready to compete for a starting job or even the backup job. That would leave the Bucs in the same position as last year, with Gradkowski being the main backup. Yuck! No thank you. I would rather bite the bullet and sign Culpepper for three years and say, $5-$8 million.

Right, like Brad Culpepper at a stealth 198lbs could suit up and play, of all positions, NOSE tackle, paleeeze. I love the idea of having Daunte here, I was bummed we chose Booger over him at the time, but here we have a chance again and I hope he ends up sticking because he would not be far from a starter if Garcia goes down, which isn’t a stretch, he could be heaving those long passes to Joey Galloway, the more I think about it, the more I like it.

We don’t need yet another QB running around Tampa and why would any quaterback want to come to Tampa with the fact that not a single starter has played ever game in years even Brad Johnson misses the last few game before the playoffs. I really think that Bruce Gradkowski is thw answer it didn’t help him being throwin into the fire last year. I see him as a Big Ben small school and determined to be a great QB in the NFL. Many Quaterbacks have done bad there first year Peyton 2or3 wins Troy the same.

I say sign him up to backup Garcia. The other qb’s could battle for third qb. If Culpepper does sign that would be a leadership at that important position.
Suggest removalThis is what I would do.1. Trade plummer rights to one team that could use his services. Put Simms on IR. or trade him. Maybe that young qb from Neb or Toledo could be the 3rd qb. Also check around before training camp to see if they would be any takers for simms services. Then if get some help for a draft pick for 2008 draft. Then tampa can get down with qb’s set.

I would say its about time. Cut Simms, that Gradwhatever guy and that McKnown kid 2. Culpepper is a gamer.

As tampa resident that that has move to Kc mo I heard this story on the four letter net work and though just as they reported the buc’s have like 12 Qbs on their roster what do we need another one for? This just proves that Chucky is grasping at stews here. Lets all face it Jeff Garcia is not the answer yes he may tap dance around and make a few play’s and I meen a few. But he will also tap dance his way in to a sack, int. Not to mention he is like what 100 all right i know only 37 but his best day are back in San Fran. Chirs Simms although i like what i have seen just has not been able to put all togather to have that break-out year. The truth that must Bucs fans do not want admit is that the Qbs stink.
Suggest removalPor (Richard Bolt) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
Buc fans lets face we should have done a better job in the past two drafts and gone after a good young Qb. Jeff Garcia is not the answer and Simms even though I like what i have seen he has not had that beake-out year yet. Maybe it’s time to let try his Luck some where else. The Bucs will stink again this year what a see. Chucky thanks for the Super Bowl but bro you got to go. I do believe I see a chin coming to town.

What we have here is a failure to communicate! The word was QUALITY at QB, not QUANTITY at QB. This is starting to look, oh let me see… what’s a good word for this situation? Pathetic certainly comes to mind. You remember how Gruden was once referred to as an offensive genius? I have decided the reference was taken completely out of context. People weren’t referring to his ability to design and call great plays for the group of players on his team that were part of the offense. They were actually describing how clever he was with curse words. There isn’t anything worse than the desperate acts of a coach trying to save his job when it comes to winning games. It’s going to get ugly folks, really, really ugly!

I read this story with excitement as did Greg but for a different reason. I thought they might be bringing in Brad Culpepper to interview him for a coaching position.
Dante can go somewhere else and play. We don’t need an overweight QB with a bum knee ... sorry.
We can lose without him.
Suggest removalPor (Rich Olson) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
The right move here (Mr. Gruden) is to release Simms and McKown. Keep Gradkowski as your third stringer and sign Culpepper. Why? Experience. You love those QB’s with experience. Snag him before Atlanta does. Culpepper has something to prove to himself and to a football team. Why not let it be with the Bucs?
Suggest removalPor (Raymond Schroeder) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
Another QB, WHY?—When are they going to develope a QB for the Future?. We may have 11 QB and no Offense. This move is desparation in hopes of winning this year so a new contract will be offered to Gruden and Associate. There isn’t one QB on this team that will be around in 2 years. Future looks bleak.
Suggest removalPor (Eric Cullison) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
Keep garcia, mccown, taylor. Trade Simms. I think Simms will end up being a decent player just not with the bucs. Sign Culpepper. Keep Simms through the end of the year and at the end trade him. Cuz you wanna MAKE sure unlike Miami that Culpepper is fully ready. 1)garcia 2)simms 3)culpepper.
JUST for the year though. And im sure he would understand that he will be competing for the job next year. Could be an amazing move.
Suggest removalPor (Fred Augat) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
Who is our back up QB right now?....Culpepper could compete for that position. Then keep the best of the rest for the 3rd spot…simms will be let go….who is going to trade for simms? garcia/culpepper/grad….with an option on plummer for 08….with the injuries we have sustained at qb over the last 5-6 years maybe we keep 4, especially if there are no takers for simms.
Suggest removalPor (Rich Franklin) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
We need at least someone with a little mobility and the ability to throw the ball downfield. In addition, someone who can read the various defenses and audible should be required. I’d keep Garcia, Mccown, and Gradowski. Mckown shows good in preseason and knows the offense. Gradowski came in unexpectedly and did a fair job and with that experience should be better. Garcia is mobile enough for a year or two, by that time someone will be ready for sure or we’ll make an acquistion. Culpepper would be a total waste of time and money. He’s an over the hill hack. By the way, Tampa will do no worse than 2nd in their division. We might have a “dogfight” with Atlanta. LOL.
Suggest removalPor (Bret Jones) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
I bet if Brady was available and the Buc’s looked at him..we would hear “why are we looking at another qb..another desperate move by a coach that needs to win now”. (as opposed to the coach who needs to win later?) As a fan I expect them to make this team better. If the Culpepper is better than any qb on the roster now then you sign him.
Suggest removalPor (Arthur Noriega) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
As a season ticket holder here in Miami and a long time Bucs fan, I’d give Culpepper a shot if he can be had without overpaying. He wasn’t mobile last year because he was hurt. He was never healthy in Miami. The one thing I question is whether he’s a fit for Gruden’s system. That’s for Gruden to decide, but I wouldn’t look at his potential signing as a bad move if it’s for the right price.
Suggest removalPor (Neo Summers) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
OK tampa is good some decent QB’s but none are even close to what Culpper was or even when he’s healthy ,now Garcia is a good veteran qb but the man is 37 as a qb in the nfl ,i can only hope gets past the first quater of the first game ,and Bruce G is still young so we can ready him for the future if needed ,so get rid off Luke MC.,.and trade Simms ,we need to win now not next year ,and give up on that other bumm PLumer, and if we lost Gruden what other good coach is there outhere to replace him ,? lets signg him and win some games , i dont see any off you trying out for the Bucs.
Suggest removalPor (Douglas Holton) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
The Bucs should sign Culpepper to a three year deal. Then he should get payed 8/10 millon. then the bucs should let go of 37year old jeff garcia. We will have cap room left. I don’t like way people talk about simms. The man splean was bleeding and he did not care he just wanted to win.
Suggest removalThe bucs should keep Culpepper, simms.
Por (TOM PFALZ) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
i THINK GRADKOWSKI SHOULD BE #2 BEHIND GARCIA MCKOWN OR TAYLOR #3 TRADE SIMMS AND PLEASE NO CULPEPPER WITH HIS BUM KNEE & ADVANCED AGE. HE WOULD NOT FIT GRUDEN’S WEST COAST OFFENSE. IF FOR SOME REASON PLUMMER DECIDES TO COME TO CAMP HE WOULD MOVE UP TO #2. WISHFUL THINKING.
Suggest removalPor (shawn Rowland) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
Ok, Ill make this simple Im a vikings Fan and was happy as hell to see coldpepper go. Yea he sometimes gets you a play or two but he has a bad case of fumblitis. They show his td stats and interception stats but how many carear fumbles does this man have? Buc fans you would be wise to boo this guy outta town. Altho if you pick him up….our defense looks better when you play us…LOL
Suggest removalPor (Patrick Dotson) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
this team needs to start looking at the future and i do believe in time bruce will be the leader of this team, give him bout 2 years, gruden right now is trying to keep his job and everybody knows that, but people need to realize at the same time,he and allen didnt have draft picks for two years and that really hurt the organization as a whole, this is chuckys make or break year, culpepper would bring depth to our qb position,we need that, simms is still hurt and bruce is still in molding phase, having 2 vets would be really good and it would help us not get in the same situation as last year….
Suggest removalPor (Warren Villaren) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
Never count a great player out when he’s down b/c 9x out of 10 they come back big and when Culpepper does come back strong, I’d rather it be w/the Bucs than w/some other team playing against us. Look at Ben Rothlesberger w/the bad year after his accident and few doubt he’ll be back as a force to deal with. Culpepper will overcome his mobility struggle sooner than Simms will overcome any of his many struggles. When Garcia’s done(37) you want Dante(30) under center. Bucs should take Culpepper, trade Simms & Plummer.
Suggest removalPor (Travis Lynam) on July 20, 2007 (Suggest removal)
I believe some of you are right on. This is Gruden’s last year to make something happen. Personally I think we should fire everyone on the coaching staff except Kiffin and hire Dungy back.(Oh, sorry I must have bumped my head, that would mean the ownership would have to be thinking clearly which isn’t the case at all.) I do think given the right situation we would have been better off keeping Dungy and taking gruden as a O.C.. At least the character would matter and the ship would still be upright.

I have been a Bucs fan since it was ‘79. I was 8 went to my first Bucs game in the pouring rain against Cheifs, they won and went on to the NFC Champion game againstRams 0-9,suckt bad.I think give Plummer a one last chance or trade him or get some money back and save on the salery cap.Srart Garcia,2nd Gradkowski, unless Plummer comes back.,Third Gradkoski or Luke.Trade Simms,I know he played his heart out against Carolina, but he was 0-4 starting and played real bad.Just my opinion, but go B-U-C-A-N-E-E-R-S Go Bucs. They use to play that song in the stadium!I like Gruden.Buc all the way!!!
