Bucs Report
Bucs Meet With Culpepper

By ROY CUMMINGS
The Tampa Tribune

TAMPA – Never one to pass on the opportunity to look at a free agent, especially a free-agent quarterback, the Bucs met with quarterback Daunte Culpepper on Thursday, Bucs officials confirmed.

The Bucs met with Culpepper, 30, just two days after the Dolphins finally gave him the release he had been seeking since they acquired Trent Green six weeks ago.

The Bucs wouldn’t appear on the surface to have a pressing need for Culpepper, because they currently have seven quarterbacks, including Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms and Bruce Gradkowski, on their roster.

However, Simms has struggled with his throwing mechanics since returning to the field following spleen surgery and Gradkowski seems to need more seasoning after struggling through most of his rookie season last year.

It is also growing increasingly obvious that Jake Plummer will not be in camp when the Bucs begin training for the 2007 season next week at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex.

An associate of Plummer’s agent, David Dunn, did not want to comment on the matter Thursday but indicated that little has changed with Plummer, who has vowed to retire.

Culpepper, a former University of Central Florida standout who had his best years with the Minnesota Vikings and who serves as his own agent, could not be reached for comment.

Culpepper, who joined the Dolphins as a free agent last summer, fell out of favor in Miami almost immediately upon his arrival when it became apparent that the knee injury he suffered the year before had robbed him of his mobility.

He was sacked 21 times in his first four games as the Dolphins starter and didn’t see the field again as the Dolphins turned first to Joey Harrington and then Cleo Lemon as replacements.

Give Culpepper a shot! Is the best QB in the market-worth the risk!

Culpepper may be intriquing but that is about it.  His knee is not fully healthy and we need a health stable of qb’s.  I think Garcia will play well but I think Gradowski will be a good quarterback soon.  Simms should be traded or released.  He doesn’t fit the system either.

Teresa, best case scenario, that type of knee injury takes two years to heal. Culpepper was injured late, (Oct.30 ‘05), in the previous season and wanted more money.  This guy was a 3 time Pro Bowler and threw for 4,700 yards in ‘04, was barely beaten out for MVP by Peyton Manning.  That year, he threw for 39 touchdowns and only 11 INT’s.  After his injury, with Brad Johnson playing well, he asked to be dealt to Miami, who took a chance on him; but the timing was bad because of the slow healing injury.  IF he’s ever going to be ready, it would be now.  I think some of the pundits who wrote on it this weekend are correct: if the Bucs sign Culpepper, look for Simms to be on the trading block.

After reading this article, it’s very clear to me that if Culpepper was pulled from the Miami start last season due to a knee injury why in the world would Gruden even be entertaining the idea of bringing him to Tampa?  His injury apparently didn’t work with the Miami Dolphins so why take that chance?  It seems that Gruden has completely torn the Bucs apart and maybe, just maybe Gruden may have to be released in order to get the Bucs to the SuperBowl again.  Just a thought.

What this shows me is: Chuckie isn’t happy with his backups, including Simms.  From that perspective, I agree. He was banking on the cry baby Plummer to MAN UP and toss his crying towel to the sideline.  He didn’t and probably isn’t.  Playing a complete season 20+ games, (if they go to the playoffs), sans injury is inconceivable in this day and age.  So who do you want to rely on: Simms?  Nope! Graduatordowski?  Nope!  So he’s shopping for someone in whom he has confidence.  Personally, it the guys gams are healed, it’s not a bad idea.  I just don’t see the Bucs paying Culpepper what he thinks he’s worth.

THis is simple. Does anybody remember Jay fiedler? A good qb with an injury issue from miami? Sounds like De ja vu...but withthe qb position really lacking any true talent, why not. What have we got to lose besides games, money and fans? We’ve already lost respect. Bump Obamam....Culpepper 2008 lol
Don’t get excited. No real good qb’s in the upcoming draft either. “Calling all qb’s who can’t get work anywhere else. Tampa is on the look out.....and I’m done with my rant.

I have been a Bucs fan since it was ‘79. I was 8 went to my first Bucs game in the pouring rain against Cheifs, they won and went on to the NFC Champion game againstRams 0-9,suckt bad.I think give Plummer a one last chance or trade him or get some money back and save on the salery cap.Srart Garcia,2nd Gradkowski, unless Plummer comes back.,Third Gradkoski or Luke.Trade Simms,I know he played his heart out against Carolina, but he was 0-4 starting and played real bad.Just my opinion, but go B-U-C-A-N-E-E-R-S Go Bucs. They use to play that song in the stadium!I like Gruden.Buc all the way!!!

I believe some of you are right on. This is Gruden’s last year to make something happen. Personally I think we should fire everyone on the coaching staff except Kiffin and hire Dungy back.(Oh, sorry I must have bumped my head, that would mean the ownership would have to be thinking clearly which isn’t the case at all.) I do think given the right situation we would have been better off keeping Dungy and taking gruden as a O.C.. At least the character would matter and the ship would still be upright.

Never count a great player out when he’s down b/c 9x out of 10 they come back big and when Culpepper does come back strong, I’d rather it be w/the Bucs than w/some other team playing against us. Look at Ben Rothlesberger w/the bad year after his accident and few doubt he’ll be back as a force to deal with. Culpepper will overcome his mobility struggle sooner than Simms will overcome any of his many struggles. When Garcia’s done(37) you want Dante(30) under center. Bucs should take Culpepper, trade Simms & Plummer.

this team needs to start looking at the future and i do believe in time bruce will be the leader of this team, give him bout 2 years, gruden right now is trying to keep his job and everybody knows that, but people need to realize at the same time,he and allen didnt have draft picks for two years and that really hurt the organization as a whole, this is chuckys make or break year, culpepper would bring depth to our qb position,we need that, simms is still hurt and bruce is still in molding phase, having 2 vets would be really good and it would help us not get in the same situation as last year....

Posted by  shawn Rowland, Indiana on 07/20  at  11:12 AM

Ok, Ill make this simple Im a vikings Fan and was happy as hell to see coldpepper go. Yea he sometimes gets you a play or two but he has a bad case of fumblitis. They show his td stats and interception stats but how many carear fumbles does this man have? Buc fans you would be wise to boo this guy outta town. Altho if you pick him up....our defense looks better when you play us...LOL

Posted by  TOM PFALZ, KENNETH CITY, FL. on 07/20  at  11:02 AM

i THINK GRADKOWSKI SHOULD BE #2 BEHIND GARCIA MCKOWN OR TAYLOR #3 TRADE SIMMS AND PLEASE NO CULPEPPER WITH HIS BUM KNEE & ADVANCED AGE. HE WOULD NOT FIT GRUDEN’S WEST COAST OFFENSE. IF FOR SOME REASON PLUMMER DECIDES TO COME TO CAMP HE WOULD MOVE UP TO #2. WISHFUL THINKING.

Posted by  Douglas Holton, Tampa FL on 07/20  at  10:26 AM

The Bucs should sign Culpepper to a three year deal. Then he should get payed 8/10 millon. then the bucs should let go of 37year old jeff garcia. We will have cap room left. I don’t like way people talk about simms. The man splean was bleeding and he did not care he just wanted to win.
The bucs should keep Culpepper,simms.

OK tampa is good some decent QB’s but none are even close to what Culpper was or even when he’s healthy ,now Garcia is a good veteran qb but the man is 37 as a qb in the nfl ,i can only hope gets past the first quater of the first game ,and Bruce G is still young so we can ready him for the future if needed ,so get rid off Luke MC.,.and trade Simms ,we need to win now not next year ,and give up on that other bumm PLumer, and if we lost Gruden what other good coach is there outhere to replace him ,? lets signg him and win some games , i dont see any off you trying out for the Bucs.

Posted by  Arthur Noriega, Miami on 07/20  at  10:12 AM

As a season ticket holder here in Miami and a long time Bucs fan, I’d give Culpepper a shot if he can be had without overpaying. He wasn’t mobile last year because he was hurt. He was never healthy in Miami. The one thing I question is whether he’s a fit for Gruden’s system. That’s for Gruden to decide, but I wouldn’t look at his potential signing as a bad move if it’s for the right price.

I bet if Brady was available and the Buc’s looked at him..we would hear “why are we looking at another qb..another desperate move by a coach that needs to win now”. (as opposed to the coach who needs to win later?) As a fan I expect them to make this team better. If the Culpepper is better than any qb on the roster now then you sign him.

Posted by  Rich Franklin, Brooksville, FL on 07/20  at  08:19 AM

We need at least someone with a little mobility and the ability to throw the ball downfield. In addition, someone who can read the various defenses and audible should be required. I’d keep Garcia, Mccown, and Gradowski. Mckown shows good in preseason and knows the offense. Gradowski came in unexpectedly and did a fair job and with that experience should be better. Garcia is mobile enough for a year or two, by that time someone will be ready for sure or we’ll make an acquistion. Culpepper would be a total waste of time and money. He’s an over the hill hack. By the way, Tampa will do no worse than 2nd in their division. We might have a “dogfight” with Atlanta. LOL.

Posted by  Fred Augat, McDonough, Georgia on 07/20  at  08:05 AM

Who is our back up QB right now?....Culpepper could compete for that position. Then keep the best of the rest for the 3rd spot...simms will be let go....who is going to trade for simms? garcia/culpepper/grad....with an option on plummer for 08....with the injuries we have sustained at qb over the last 5-6 years maybe we keep 4, especially if there are no takers for simms.

Posted by  Eric Cullison, Tampa, FL on 07/20  at  06:51 AM

Keep garcia, mccown, taylor. Trade Simms. I think Simms will end up being a decent player just not with the bucs. Sign Culpepper. Keep Simms through the end of the year and at the end trade him. Cuz you wanna MAKE sure unlike Miami that Culpepper is fully ready. 1)garcia 2)simms 3)culpepper.

JUST for the year though. And im sure he would understand that he will be competing for the job next year. Could be an amazing move.

Posted by  Raymond Schroeder, Clearwater on 07/20  at  06:30 AM

Another QB, WHY?--When are they going to develope a QB for the Future?.  We may have 11 QB and no Offense. This move is desparation in hopes of winning this year so a new contract will be offered to Gruden and Associate.  There isn’t one QB on this team that will be around in 2 years.  Future looks bleak.

Posted by  Rich Olson, New Jersey on 07/20  at  06:03 AM

The right move here (Mr. Gruden) is to release Simms and McKown. Keep Gradkowski as your third stringer and sign Culpepper. Why? Experience. You love those QB’s with experience. Snag him before Atlanta does. Culpepper has something to prove to himself and to a football team. Why not let it be with the Bucs?

Posted by  Olin "Gil" Fales, Jr., Land O Lakes, FL on 07/20  at  03:24 AM

I read this story with excitement as did Greg but for a different reason. I thought they might be bringing in Brad Culpepper to interview him for a coaching position.

Dante can go somewhere else and play. We don’t need an overweight QB with a bum knee ... sorry.

We can lose without him. wink

Posted by  Rick Lackey, Valrico on 07/20  at  02:00 AM

What we have here is a failure to communicate! The word was QUALITY at QB, not QUANTITY at QB. This is starting to look, oh let me see… what’s a good word for this situation? Pathetic certainly comes to mind. You remember how Gruden was once referred to as an offensive genius? I have decided the reference was taken completely out of context. People weren’t referring to his ability to design and call great plays for the group of players on his team that were part of the offense. They were actually describing how clever he was with curse words. There isn’t anything worse than the desperate acts of a coach trying to save his job when it comes to winning games. It’s going to get ugly folks, really, really ugly!

Buc fans lets face we should have done a better job in the past two drafts and gone after a good young Qb. Jeff Garcia is not the answer and Simms even though I like what i have seen he has not had that beake-out year yet. Maybe it’s time to let try his Luck some where else. The Bucs will stink again this year what a see. Chucky thanks for the Super Bowl but bro you got to go. I do believe I see a chin coming to town.

Posted by  Richard Bolt, Kansas City Mo on 07/20  at  12:27 AM

As tampa resident that that has move to Kc mo I heard this story on the four letter net work and though just as they reported the buc’s have like 12 Qbs on their roster what do we need another one for? This just proves that Chucky is grasping at stews here. Lets all face it Jeff Garcia is not the answer yes he may tap dance around and make a few play’s and I meen a few. But he will also tap dance his way in to a sack, int. Not to mention he is like what 100 all right i know only 37 but his best day are back in San Fran. Chirs Simms although i like what i have seen just has not been able to put all togather to have that break-out year. The truth that must Bucs fans do not want admit is that the Qbs stink.
