Bucs Will Lean On Clayton, Stovall

Q: Ira or Roy, do you guys see the Bucs possibly looking at bringing in Reche Caldwell or Tampa’s own Darrell Jackson since Bryant Johnson signed with the 49ers and Hackett isn’t showing a real interest with the bucs? Thanks.—Patrick Dotson, Tampa

A: That could happen but I really believe the Bucs plan is to lean more on Michael Clayton and Maurice Stovall and draft heavy for that position in April.

We need a young QB big, strong, with an arm. Garcia is almost 40. I think the guy is great but we need to give him some “TOM BRADY” time in the pocket this year.I expect to see great strides by this O-line, Were young strong and nasty(trueblood)dude I love it,but your not playing hockey ou there up front, I like it. question now is who is 1st QB on the depth chart to be released. The CB issue is one of the only reasons I see us drafting a big name.85

The poster’s who seem to think that being a “Florida Boy” deserves special consideration in signing players should keep their dumb and prejudicial mouth’s shut. Other than being able to handle the heat (Ga,Miss,Al,Ark,Az,Nm) also qualify for a broader talent pool. Most of the Florida Boys that the Bucs have signed in the past moved on rather quickly. We should be looking for talent period.

Chuck, just wanted to let you know that you don’t have to live in FL to be passionate about the Bucs.  You want passionate?  How about moving from FL, at age 10, to WI about 30 minutes south of Green Bay, and wearing my bright ass orange Bucs coats to school everyday from 5th grade until I graduated. Passionate enough that when my son was born, in a hospital in the same town the Bears practice, he went home wrapped in a Bucs blanket.  My name has been on the ticket list for years, and even though my wife and I frequently move because I proudly serve in the Navy, she knows that my name has been on the ticket list for a long time, and when that time comes, we will make one last move...to the state that was once, my home state.

Travis from Ill. not even in the state of Florida.  Most of the people writing in these comments are “TRUE BUC FANS”.  Most of us live in the state where the Buc actually play.  But you can be a Buc Fan anywhere - you don’t need to live in FL.  All you need to be is passionate about your team.  We are so passionate about our team and the moves our teams make that we occasionally criticize our team when we feel our team makes a bad move buying, trading or cutting players.  That’s what freedom of speech is all about and that’s what makes us all different.  No one is going to shut up or stop writing to appease you so lay of the Meth and Welcome to the USA!  Now, Gruden and Allen find us a good 2nd receiver to HELP OUR TEAM WIN!  GO BUCS!!

Why does everyone keep saying draft Desean Jackson?  Did anyone see that kid play last year?  He disappears in big games and doesn’t have the hands to be an elite WR (which if you’re drafting him in the 1st round that’s what you’re looking for).  Wow he’s fast. Great.  He’ll be a good return man. That’s it.  We should draft a WR no earlier than the 2nd round. It’s a need, but how many 1st round WR’s make impacts in this league?

Posted by  Travis, Great Lakes, IL on 03/19  at  05:19 PM

I got an idea!  How about we all make a deal.  When we make the playoffs again this year, because of Gruden and Allen’s moves, all of you idiots who have nothing educated to say will leave this forum for good.  If we miss the playoffs because of them, then us “True” Bucs fans will stop posting on here so that you losers can continue to be miserable together without any of us to remind you how dumb you often sound.

I think the Bucs should lean on Stovall and Clayton. But if that WR available in round one. Getem, I do like Caldwell in round 2. So if one of the South Florida’s CB is still there at Bucs pick. Pick that CB, or if that other player CB from California is available in Rd 2. And pick DeSean Jackson in Round 1. Any of these players will be a great addition.

Posted by  Michael Harris, Tampa, FL on 03/19  at  02:17 PM

Ahhhhh Sheeeeese....here we go again...the Bucs are about to enter another season with dregs of the bottom of the barrel at wide receiver???  Please say it isn’t so.  Stovall is good on special teams; but he ain’t no hifalutin play maker.  And of course, neither is Clayton.  I hope the Bucs will get some burners at that position to help Joey.  Remember: in the NFL, SPEED KILLS.

Posted by  Chuck King, Palm Beach Co. Fl on 03/19  at  01:36 PM

Why do the Buc’s still consider Clayton as an option?  He was a flash in the pan.  His first year out he was rookie of the year at the WR spot.  Since then he has disappeared in games.  He can’t make any catch never mind the easy ones and he should be considered at this point a bust.  Why, why, why are we so content on leaning on someone who should be gone?  We couldn’t even get a trade offer for the guy and he makes simple grabs look like a fishing boulders from a lake.  His strides are not fluid and all of his movements seem animated.  If a fan can see this - why can’t the coaches?  Get rid of the dead weight and bring in a real receiver to help out Joey or we’ll be in a similar place next year.

Posted by  Chandler, Tampa on 03/19  at  11:43 AM

The biggest problem with being a GM has to be solving a 3D problem while answering to 2D people. Take Calvin Johnson for instance. We land him, lose Adams, Sears, and Piscitelli, (all starters), because of forfeited pick for CJ. Then we lose Jackson and Black because positional needs haven’t been addressed i.e. pass rush, o-line. This leads to us missing playoffs and not attracting top tier FA’s this offseason. Finally you give your first two picks this year, cuz that’s also what it cost for Johnson and you’re set right? How many players are left from the drafts where we only participated limited 1st day and fully second day?

Posted by  Nick,  on 03/19  at  07:29 AM

Come on now, We have good receivers in Joey, Ike, Clayton, Stoval and Warren. We need the arm to get them the ball.. Garcia threw 5-6 passes where Joey had to come back to the ball, what a joke. There’s only one QB on the team who can hit a receiver downfield in stride and we don’t know if he’ll ever play again. Garcia, Griese, McCown or Grads are lucky to throw the ball 45-50 yards with a tail wind. Simms is the only QB on the team that can get the ball 65-70 yards. I hope the kid recovered, it’s Grudens fault for not using the Shot Gun.  Simms is 6-0 when sacked 2 or less times in a game and 0-4 when sacked 3 or more times in a game. Give this kid some protection and the shot gun formation and he improves 40% - 50%.

i think that they should make Clayton a tight end. he is one of the best blockers on team. the only thing that is hurting this team is keeping the players we got healthy. we still went to play offs with 12 or 13 guys on ir. not a bad season considering.i believe stovall is a playmaker if given the chance. Gruden relies on 1 receiver too much in a game.

THIS HAS BEEN JUST LIKE GRUDEN, DINK AND DONK, THEN BOOM! JUST WAIT AND SEE WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN!? ITS JUST MARCH. THERE WILL BE MORE WR’S WITH TALENT AVALIBLE (I.E. CHAD JOHNSON)
COME ON BUC FANS DONT ROCK THE BOAT.

Posted by  Dave, Hornell, NY on 03/18  at  11:01 PM

OK Mitch the article does not say the Bucs suck, etc. etc. but it doesn’t say they are good or that their offense is good either. This is a very average offense that couldn’t get past the first playoff game this year with Graham, Garcia and galloway so what makes you think it will next year. Listen, Galloway is going to be another year older and teams have already proven that when you double-team him and shut him down, the offense struggles because Garcia has nobody else to throw to. Nothing has changed as the Bucs have done nothing to make themselves better. Face it, Allen and Gruden struck out this off-season in getting their “Tiger woods” type playmaker so why do you continue to defend them?

I don’t want to see another 1st day drafted skill position player being wasted after being good for one season (see Michael Clayton, Cadillac Williams).  I would rather see Monte teach young studs on Defense and let Gruden play his merry-go-round on offensive side every year via free agents.

First of all Id like to tell richard Kinder he is an idiot and his comment made him look so dumb.. tell me something richard how did the bucs blow there chance when they didnt get calvin johnson when they didnt get the chance to get calvin? maybe if we passed on him that would have been one thing but its not the bucs fault the lions snagged him before us… anyways.. yea the espn thing on the bucs if totally true I love the moves we have made so far I just wish we had the WR that we need with galloway, Like a boldin or fitz or chad ( i know never gonna happen) but I think with the new add ons we deff have improved in our weak somes esp @ center spot

Posted by  Erik, Chester,Pa on 03/18  at  08:11 PM

Hey Mitch. Remember that great Championship had at least 3 playmakers on offense, defense and special teams. Playmakers make plays. Last year, how about T.Owens, B.Westbrook, R.Barber, D.Hester? Get it? Bad start to off-season but getting better with K.Carter,E.Wilson, Douglas signings. Was the right track D.Boston or J.Stevens? We are a joke around the league. Of course I am biased. I AM a BUCS fan. Are you?

Posted by  cory, tampa on 03/18  at  07:52 PM

We didn’t miss out on calvin johnson.  Gaines Adams is going to be a huge player for us for years to come and I would much rather have him.  Stovall and Clayton deserved to be leaned on last year.  While I know clayton has had his woes, he also was targeted 2 or 3 times every other game as opposed to 10x a game when he was a rookie.  Stovall still hasn’t had much of a chance.  I couldn’t believe we didn’t try a game plan with either of them being the center piece in one of our final games where we weren’t trying anyways.

Posted by  Cody Ubben, Cedar Falls, IA on 03/18  at  07:03 PM

I’ll be supremely upset if we waste our 1st round pick on a receiver. CB, DT, or DE and not in that particular order but those are the positions we should look at in the 1st round.

Posted by  patrick dotson, tampa,fl on 03/18  at  05:35 PM

i really think the bucs need to take the last two years and learn from them...injuries really killed us the last two years and i believe having depth at key positions like qb,rb,and wr will help us in the later part of the year...i think clayton is more of a mental prob and stovall i believe needs more playing time...but jackson and caldell would bring us depth that we need and i bet at a low cost...not only that hillard and galloway are at the end of the road so to speak...lets start lookin towards the future a bit...jackson and caldell are in there prime and they both fit grudens offense...and there florida boys...whay not try to get them....go bucs!

There are 2 constants on the Buc Report: 1) the reporting is substandard and generally negative, and 2) Kinzer’s ragging on every player under the sun.

Posted by  KBA, Florida on 03/18  at  05:04 PM

I see the issue a little differently.  Young offensive line still maturing (but I believe is going to be a great unit)and when Graham got tired late in games last year no one to run the ball and create game changing runs.  That equates, in my opinion, to the opposing defenses pinning their ears back in the pass rush and limiting Garcia’s time to throw which then limits not much more than little dump off passes.  How do our receivers have many chances to succeed with this formula?

Hopefully a stronger center, our starting left tackle staying healthy and a stronger running game will keep defenses honest thus creating more opportunities downfield, right?

Posted by  Seth Kaufman, FT. LAUDERDALE on 03/18  at  04:48 PM

Clayton has not shown much but then he has not had many opportunities either. I would love a stat on how many balls were thrown his way vs how many he caught. He did make some good tough catches in the playoff game in case no one remembers. His rookie year he was the only option and he came though. The jury should still be out on him!

If anyone stopped to think about it, they might realize that this is how the Patriots built their team. Never overspending, rarely caring for big names, finding quality players who buy into the organizations big picture. I’d say that worked out quite well. And the Bucs/Gruden/Allen bashing ‘fans’ are getting dumber and more laughable by the day. It’s not even fun to argue with them anymore, like running the 50m dash vs. people with no legs. “Wake up Bucs”..too funny. “Only 4 more years of this”...stop it. My ribs hurt.
