Bucs Whittle List Of OC Candidates To Final Few

Posted Jan 28, 2009 by Roy Cummings

Updated Jan 28, 2009 at 01:03 PM

TAMPA – The Bucs are said to have whittled down their list of offensive coordinator candidates to three.

The finalists for the position are Bucs quarterbacks coach Greg Olson, Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese and Titans quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson.

The team is expected to spend the next couple of days contemplating the matter and could announce a hire as soon as Friday.

Olson came to the Bucs last year, after spending the previous two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams.

Zampese has been an NFL assistant coach since 1998 but has never been a coordinator.

Johnson recently completed his ninth season with the Titans, for who he has spent the last seven years as quarterbacks coach.

This means that the Bucs have no STAND-OUT among their final few candidates.

Chan Gailey is not on this list. I think they are waiting this out until next week to see if he becomes available.

And what does this “the Bucs are said”? Who said? Is there a source, or is this a completely made up list?

Who did you think they were going to get at this stage?  One of these young guys just might be the right man for the job, who knows, not me or any of you other bloggers.  Reading all the comments from other articles pertaining to the coaching staff search is just laughable.  “Hire him, no him”. I think we should give guys who do this for a living, “the benefit of the doubt”.  I don’t know and neither do you people so stop acting like it. All we can do as fans is hope the owners have put the right men in place to bring a championship back to TB. So unless your resume has NFL scouting director or assistant of football operations on it, I’d say sit down and shut up because you have no idea what you’re talking about.

It doesn’t matter if the guy knows what he’s doing. All that matters is that he’s a nice guy. They may be 3-13 next year, but the coaches will be really nic guys!

D Brown WI, it’s called opinions(although I do agree, some think they are the football masters of the universe) and if the owners supposedly listened to the haters before and fired Gruden, then I assume they will keep it up now, hoping they are still listening. BTW; how’s the weather up there?

I was just wondering about the source of this information.

I’m a little suspicious when I read, “The Bucs are said to…” Especially when I read on PewterReport that they are waiting to see if Chan Gailey becomes available.

So are any of these guys West Coast Offense?  I remember one year we had an assistant come in as OC and it was poor under Tony Dungy. Remember his playbook was like 20 plays? Clyde Christensen? 2001 we got beat by Philly 31-9 in round 1 of the playoffs and Tony Dungy got fired. That was at the end of a long tenure of Mike Shula dn a year under Les Steckles. I hope we can come up with a playbook to replace Gruden’s, good luck implementing that by the fall!

Speaking of Pewterreport.com this is A MUST READ INTERVIEW WITH BILL MUIR.

RJ, Olsen is west coast not sure about the other guys. And about replacing Gruden’s offense, go read that interview with Muir, it is quite eye opening.

Of all of the people associated with the Bucs, it’s nice to see one guy show more class than all of the other bozo’s combined. His name is Bill Muir. Don’t worry coach, you and Jon will get the last laugh starting in April with the draft.

Por (bozo the clown) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

This is one coach’s point of view… there are other coaches who have had a different view of Gruden… one not quite as flattering.

No one ever said that Gruden wasn’t a tremendously hard worker. NO one ever said he didn’t prepare his players well. Even Keyshawn has said that he was one of the best X’s and O’s coaches…

Very revealing was Muir’s comments about “overachieving” on little talent. Here’s the point on Gruden. He did not develop players!!! THey had 6 years after the SuperBowl to draft and develop players and all they have to show for it is a talented, underachieving OL.

Por (Rich) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Gruden didn’t draft the players, Allen did. Allen definitely needed to go, so what do they do? Hire a GM who has no idea what he’s doing. This will prove to be a disaster.

Por (bozo the clown) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Gruden picked the GM.

Por (Perry Lerner) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Yeah that 2nd pick of Gruden’s, Dexter Jackson, was a solid pick.

Who is the GM we hired that has no idea in what he’s doing?  Dominik has been with the Bucs for 14 yrs or something like that and has a hand in exaluatiing players.  I believe I saw somewhere he was the one pushing for us to give Antonio Bryant a chance.

I think we all might still be curious of who stated that these were the three finalist? As far as I can tell these are the only names that we know about that they have talked to.

First of all, what the heck is “whittle”?? it seems like the the glazers are “whittling” their buc budget. Is this really the best we can do for OC? wow…first we get a DB coach as a head coach, and now this….we are so going to suck this year. I miss chucky already.

Por (BucFandango) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Can we vote (D) None of the Above. It sounds like a case of who sucks the least. I say keep on looking or give Kyle Whittingham of Utah or Steve Spurrier a call. Let’s keep with the new blood, take our bumps & bruises and look to the future. No more re-treads.

Por (BucFandango) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Oops, I guess Spurrier is a Re-tread, but a former buc and Fun & Gun is cool. I miss Chuckles too. He was my hero, but he sure screwed up a pretty good thing. If only he could of done a few things different…Who are the hater’s going to hate now. Even Toc’s boys started winning. Go Lightning!

Rich of St Pete, Allen was not a scout or a personel guy. He was a day to day operations/capguy.              Perry Lerner so you have a problem with the talent we have now, but you think the guy who was in charge of evaluating the talent before should be the GM now…

Por (Eric) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Gruden could out coach any of these guys in his sleep…............

Por (Roland) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

And here is my guess on what went down based on what we know…  Gruden had lunch that Friday afternoon and all went well with the Glazer Boys. He thought. Jon let them know we need to be aggressive and go after some big time FAs this offseason. The Glazer boys smiled and nodded and shook Jon’s hand and told him what a good idea that was….. CONT-

Por (Roland) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

-CONT Then after the lunch the Glazers either (A) Knew they didn’t have the money to spend (due to the massive debt service on Man U) or (B) One of the 3 of them figured out a good idea on how to to not spend the money and hopefully save some face with a lot of fans who wanted Gruden to go or (C) They knew before the meeting they wanted to let Jon go, they just wanted to wait long enough so that all of the “expensive” candidates were already hired.
So they fired him.            And this farce began.

Por (:Papajohn) on January 28, 2009 (Suggest removal)

RJ: Christensen seems actually on par with the 3 the Bucs are considering. He was the QB coach before becoming the OC.

Por (Eric) on January 29, 2009 (Suggest removal)

Exellent points Roland, these Glazers are sharp. Im sure they are looking at the current economic crisis and looking to cut costs. No other explanation for such an idiotic decision. Pathetic.

Por (HFXBUC) on January 29, 2009 (Suggest removal)

wow.  I really liked Gruden but he lost the locker room…Kiffin was the glue that was holding this team together - he leaves the team implodes The Glazers realized they had one of the hottest up and coming coaches that they were on the verge of losing.  The Glazers like they did with Dungy made the tough decision. Its not a money move, it was expensive to fire Gruden and Allen - remember the extensions last year? They had to already have been disappointed they let Mike Tomlin get away so they don’t make the same mistake twice.  They totally changed the dynamic of the team…a team that has lots of talent and is up and coming…a team that just needed to get some new juice…enter Raheem Morris
