Bucs should be favored in NFC South

Posted Jul 15, 2008 by Ira Kaufman

The Saints appear to be the trendy pick to win the NFC South this fall, but there are real concerns in New Orleans about whether Sean Payton’s club can recapture its magical 2006 form.

An 0-4 start doomed New Orleans to a 7-9 finish last year and the defense was awful, yielding at least 31 points six times. The defense wasn’t very good in 2006 either, but the NFL’s No. 1 offense routinely bailed out the Saints as they reached the NFC title game at Soldier Field.

The Saints have made some significant defensive pickups, signing free agent LB Jonathan Vilma and drafting DT Sedrick Ellis, but the secondary is still lousy. DE Charles Grant, who underperformed last year, is facing legal woes and the retirement of free agent LB Dan Morgan doesn’t help.

Compounding the problem in New Orleans is the uncertainty surrounding RB Deuce McAllister, who was the offensive hammer in ‘06. While flashy Reggie Bush was more exciting, it was McAllister who provided the tough inside yards that opened things up for Bush and WR Marques Colston. McAllister is still recovering from a devastating knee injury that ripped the guts from Payton’s playbook in 2007.

Bush has already proven he is not a stellar No. 1 back, so if McAllister struggles, the burden will be heavy once again for Drew Brees, who led the league with 652 pass attempts. The defection of C Jeff Faine to Tampa hurts up front, where the Saints do an outstanding job protecting Brees.

Payton’s a sharp coach, but the Saints have some huge question marks, particularly on defense.

The Bucs boast the best defense in the division, by far, and Tampa Bay has done a nice job of retooling on the fly. The only returning defensive starters from 2006 are DT Chris Hovan, OLB Derrick Brooks, CB Ronde Barber and S Jermaine Phillips. That’s quite an overhaul in a short period of time for Monte Kiffin’s proud unit.

While the Falcons rebuild under a new coach and GM, Carolina faces a season of desperation.

Coach John Fox and GM Marty Hurney survived a second straight disappointing season and the Panthers gambled in the draft by trading a future No. 1 pick to move up for T Jeff Otah. The Panthers have been a conservative organization, so the draft-day deal illustrates a new sense of urgency in Charlotte.

If QB Jake Delhomme returns fully from elbow surgery, the passing game should improve markedly, but the Panthers still don’t run effectively and a once-feared pass rush has withered away. DE Julius Peppers went AWOL, frustrating owner Jerry Richardson, who had hoped Peppers would embrace a more visible leadership role.

Add it all up and the Bucs have fewer issues than their division peers as they seek to become the first NFC South champion to repeat.

Saints are Better, I’m pretty sure you did nothing to prove me wrong except run your mouth.  Brees is your only clear advantage.  Your WRs and RBs aren’t better.  Your O and D lines aren’t better and everything behind the D-line is laughable compared to what we have.
Bigbucfan, I’m right there with you.  I go into a months long depression as soon as football season ends.  The only thing that alleviates it is the draft and, then, football.  I’m also a certifiable Bucs fan.  I accidentally jumped and put my head through my glass ceiling fan light cover after that Bryant 62-yarder.  My friends were a bit concerned about my excessive enthusiasm after that.  Oh well.

By the way non-Bucs fans, thanks for supporting the local paper and probably our team by visiting their web sites.  Unfortunately, I’m stuck up here in Memphis away from our team, but it’s nice to know you are helping them rake in the advertising dollars with me.
I don’t make predictions, but barring serious injuries, there is no reason we shouldn’t be better this year.  What is your reason for thinking your team will be better?  None of you have a QB who just put his 1st year with your team under his belt.  None of you has as many playmakers coming out of the woodwork.  I could go on, but I’m about out of space.

Saints are better:
The improvement the Saints made this off-season shows that they are committed to excellence. Sure the Bucs won the Division last year, but on silly mistakes made by the Saints. After the 0-4 start, look what they accomplished after they figured out how to work with what they had (7-5). Now this is a new year, with new additions and familiar faces, the Saints will win the Division and go deep into the playoffs. Saints are better !!!

ref813, memphis,Offense:we now have a healthy Mark Campbell, who is one of the best run blocking tight ends in the NFL,we got Carl Nicks from Nebraska;he is huge and showing good signs of being able to open holes for the run game.We have Arrington(WR) from Michigan, who is being thought of as a fast Colston. We will have Goodwin at center again;he had proven himself when Jeff Fain got hurt. If Deuce is healthy,it will be hard to stop the run while your safeties have to respect the deep threat and LBs have to respect Reggie.Reggie will do Ninja moves on your LBs and safeties.Deuce is one of the best RBs in the league and with the improved run blocking,he will get many yards,if he can play.Brees’ is now done with rehabbing his shoulder…

Defense: Vilma is going to be a monster and give us something the Saints never really had before, a probowl LB. Then with Smith and Grant working with Ellis, it’s going to be great having guys on the D line that will actually be able to help blitz. Smith and Grant can’t do it alone, but they will have a lot of help this time around. Our CBs are Sh*t, but the best CBs in the world can’t do crap if the job can’t get done up front, and this year, the D line will be putting pressure on QBs and stuffing the run. Last year, they gave QBs too much time to throw the ball; you won’t see that this year, and our CBs should not get burned as much because of that.

Well, now that you know I wasn’t just talking crap, I would also like you to know that I don’t mind supporting the Tampa paper. It’s the least I can do after you and everyone else had to pay taxes to help our city.

Oh, and I know the Bucs made improvements too, everyone did, but watch out!

Don’t kid yourself !! Your CBs are going to get burned !! And all the WRs coming from the draft this year are going to be Bust !!! Just like the Falcons, the Saints gave up the farm on unproven players what a bunch of idiots !! Vilma isn’t really that great, He is a Florida native we know all about him. He is a bust in the NFL also. Sorry “Canes fans”  sad but true.

todd, PSJ,

Vilma was a monster with the Jets until they switched the defensive scheme.
Our D will fit his style.
Don’t kid ‘yourself’. Can’t wait to read ‘your’ post after week one… Can’t wait to see our D line get up close and personnel with Garcia.

It’s a good match-up no doubt. Great defense vs. great offense. It really comes down to how well our offense vs. the Saints defense is. They both have addressed their woes and we’ll see what happens. I believe the Bucs will have the advantage though based on 1) coaching and 2) depth. However, it’s the NFL and on any given Sunday…well you know the rest!

Saints are better, I don’t think your team made any improvements that we didn’t make as well.  Bush?  He appears to be as big of a bust as another individual with the same last name.  Our lines are both improving, we both drafted a fast WR, etc.  So what gives you such an advantage?  Brees may be healthier, but Garcia was in his 1st year with us last year and should be much improved this year, especially with the continuing improvement of our O-line.  Barring injuries to either team, I would say that you should be happy to be 1-1 v. Bucs.  I’m going to the Car. at Bucs game and may have to make it down to the Bucs at NO game.  I’ll start checking with my extended family down there and see if I can watch this battle in person.

Yes it should be close and its going to be a great game I can’t wait to see it. You will hear it first hand: 31-10 Bucs win !! I hope everybody remembers this prediction when it happens because I’m definitly going to be throwing it in your faces. Here I’ll even give you Saints a little more credit : 31-13 Bucs win !! Sound better ? same outcome. I’m being honest here the only way the Saints are going to win anything is if they bring back the heart and intenseity they were playing with after Katrina happend. But that has left the building. I am a die hard Bucs fan but I was even rooting for the Saints that season. They should have never let Joe Horn go that was a big mistake.

What scares me most about the Bucs is Joey Galloway.  Even at his age, he’s still a burner.  The man looks like lightning against our pathetic secondary.  (For the love of God, Payton, DO NOT cover the guy with Jason David.)
I’m looking forward to this year.  But I really think that Gruden should give up on Garcia soon and work on their future QB, though.  Garcia is closing in on 40, and he can’t play at this level much longer.

I think it will 2 close games between the Saints & Bucs. You guys have a great QB but he was average against the Bucs D,our back-up did better than him I think. Both teams will be good at running game next season if McAllister stays healthy. At WR the Colston is a better No.1 receiver than Galloway, but after that both teams receiving core are average. The Bucs have a better D than the Saints. So my predicting is the Bucs take both games.

I do believe rookie QB Josh Johnson will start sooner then everybody thinks. That kid is going to be a baller. A QB with 4.3 speed is unreal, the kid is a dang good passer also only throwing one int. for like 5000 yrds. last season in school. That is awesome !!

Your article is very telling about whom you FEAR the most this year, I would expect an article proclaiming that the Bucs “should” be the favorites in the NFC South, to have more insight as to WHY they should be.

You’ve spent well more than half of your article taking about what the Saints have or why they “shouldn’t” be the favorites (that the ARE by the way).

It’s fairly obvious by the amount of ink spent on each team, which team you REALLY believe is the favorites and who doesn’t worry you at all.

Telling indeed, and I can’t fault you for being afraid, expecially with a defense now to compliment our very high octane offense.

Good view of what’s going to happen this year, as your fears are indeed justified.

I can’t wait for Kickoff. I like that we get some night games this season. You Saints fans are allright. Good Points on your team’s upgrades, same with the Bucs fans. Good Debate. It should be very exciting. I think the NFC South will definitely be better as a whole, but the Bucs are going to the Superbowl. You gotta believe, no matter who you’re pulling for. I just hope the injury Bug stays away from everybody this year….except the Pats. I hate the Pats, and Tony Romo, your also going down. There’s plenty of butts to be Kicked this Season. Hey Pacman, that was Joey Galloway that just flew past you. Greased Lightning. Michael Bennett also has some jets. People will be rudely awakened this Season. Bucs Rule !!!

You make a good point Benson, but Ira knows the Bucs rule the South. He’s seen the team this spring. Ira & Roy both do articles that don’t always paint a positive picture about the Bucs. We’re use to it though. Gruden gets bashed more than anybody…except good Old George W. No matter what goes wrong, it has to be one of their Faults. The Saints are good, no doubt, but not great. They have too many holes on defense and the O line is very questionable. I’m glad we get to duke it out first game of the season. It will be a good measure of both teams. We’ll see.

BigBucFan,
Our O-Line is “questionable”, wow that’s a new one on me, let me ask you this, which QB in the ENTIRE NFL was sacked the least last year AND in 2006?
Secondly our D-Line with Sedrick Ellis a pure MONSTER in both pass rushing and run stuffing is actually playing BOTH DT spots this year, the 3 tech. AND the nose, yes, he IS THAT GOOD.
Jonathan Vilma was defensive rookie of the year in New York in their 4-3 scheme, speaks 5 languages and has the football IQ of Bill Walsh, this ONE person alone as our MLB “Field General” will have this defense in such excellent position for every play, that it will appear that we were in the offensive huddle with the opponents.

Por (todd) on July 18, 2008 (Suggest removal)

How do you even know what Sedrick Ellis can do on the NFL level ? He hasn’t even played the first down yet !! He was good in the collegic level but the NFL is a whole different story he isn’t playing Stanford anymore or Eastern Colorado.Oh ya thats right Stanford even beet him. Ask Reggie Bush !! He hasn’t done anything in the NFL yet, so far he has been a total bust. Sure if your a fan you are going to say otherwise but stats speak for themselves.

Por (todd) on July 18, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Sedrick Ellis is playing those three possitions because they have nobody else to play them. That alone = disaster

Por (BigBucFan) on July 18, 2008 (Suggest removal)

It’s just that your O line has about a 48” wide hole right in the center of it. Trust me, we had the same hole in our line that just happened to get plugged. I think it will equate to about a dozen or so sacks of Mr Brees. I just hope he doesn’t get hurt like our QB did, but that’s on you now. Ellis was touted to be an exceptional player in one of the weaker conferences in College Football. I’m an SEC Fan all the way, and that includes LSU with the Gators. Percy Harvin, now theres a back for you. USC guys are good, but their players usually hit a wall in the NFL. Sedric Ellis will get owned by the Bucs’ O line. It will take some time for him. We’ll find out soon enough.
