Bucs Scouting Players, Coaches At Senior Bowl

MOBILE, Ala. – Like the NFL Scouting Combine, the Senior Bowl is pretty much a job fair. The difference is that here at the Senior Bowl, it’s not just the players who are looking for work.

There are a lot of coaches looking for work as well here and a lot of teams, college and pro alike, are looking for coaches. The Bucs once again are in the latter category.

They are on the lookout this year for a receivers coach and quaterbacks coach and their plan, according to Bucs coach Raheem Morris is to interview a couple of candidates here and maybe another in Tampa before making a decision.

One potential candidate from inside the Bucs organization is assistant receivers coach Tim Berbenich, who could take over as receivers coach but doesn’t seem destined just yet to be the Bucs new quarterbacks coach.

Another coaching issue the Bucs are dealing with involves linebackers coach Joe Barry, who has twice been contacted by new University of Tennessee coach Derek Dooley about possible taking over as his defensive coordinator.

Morris said he is in “discussions’’ with Barry about that opportunity, which may mean that the Bucs will allow Barry to talk to UT should UT actually offer Barry a job.

“Joe Barry’s my guy, so we have to at least sit down and have those discussions,’’ Morris said. “I look forward to sitting down with him and talking about it and seeing what we have to work through.’’

One thing to keep in mind in all of this is the economic landscape of the NFL, which is moving closer every day to the possibility of a work stoppage sometime after the 2010 season.

Most Bucs coaches, including Barry, are under contract through 2010, and with the future uncertain it’s doubtful the Bucs will get into the business of extending anyone beyond next season.
