TAMPA – It didn’t take long for Amarri Jackson to grasp the importance of ball security Tuesday as Tampa Bay players gathered for the first of three mandatory mini-camp days.
The rookie wide receiver out of USF caught a flare pass down the right sidelines and took a few strides before inexplicably dropping the ball. CB Phillip Buchanon picked up the fumble and headed toward the end zone as Coach Jon Gruden watched intently.
When Jackson joined his teammates on the sidelines before the next snap, he dropped and gave the Bucs 25 pushups while Gruden checked out the guilty party.
“Coach came at me a little bit, but I know you can’t fumble balls, especially at this level, because these guys here know how to scoop and score,’’ said Jackson. “I was pretty upset with myself, but you have to bounce back and make plays. As players, we need to hear constructive criticism and roll with it.’’
RB Earnest Graham, who wants a new contract, attended Tuesday’s session after missing OTA workouts. QB Chris Simms, who criticized Gruden last week in an effort to expedite a trade or his release, was not in attendance at the facility Tuesday as teammates practiced in muggy conditions.
“Earnest looked good,’’ said LB Derrick Brooks. “He made a couple of cuts and you can tell he’s been working.’’
Gruden was happy to get Graham back and he quickly tired of questions concerning Simms.
“Earnest is here and we’re happy to see him,’’ Gruden said. “He’s a heck of a player and these matters have a way of working themselves out. He’s a key member of our football team. I don’t know where Chris is. As I said, I like him a lot and I wish him the best in his situation, but I’m going to coach the guys that are here. His situation will take care of itself.’’
Dark clouds began to roll in during the late stages of the morning session, but Tampa Bay players got all their assigned work in before breaking for lunch.
The Bucs practiced without pads and no hitting was allowed as tight ends John Gilmore and Keith Heinrich made some nice catches over the middle. QB Luke McCown found targets downfield and rookie Josh Johnson completed all five of his morning pass attempts.
“We had a little faster tempo than normal this morning,’’ Brooks said. “Coach wants to get rookies and new players accustomed to how practice will go at training camp. I think we got better as a team in the offseason. Our offensive line is growing together and Jeff Garcia has another year in this offense. Defensively, it’s always competitive on our side of the football.’’
The Bucs will move Wednesday’s session to Raymond James Stadium before returning to the team facility for a final practice Thursday morning. Players and coaches will then scatter before arriving at Lake Buena Vista in five weeks for the start of training camp.
Despite all the heat and humidity, middle linebacker Barrett Ruud barely broke a sweat.
“I was bad, but practice was all right,’’ he said. “Today was better than it’s been around here for the past two weeks. The way I judge the heat is whether my shorts are leaking at the bottom—then I know it’s really hot. Right now, I’m midway. If my shoes are dry, I’m good.’’

You drop the football once on Chucky’s team, you are going to get an earful. You drop it twice, you’re riding the pine. You do it enough times BEFORE THE SEASON, you’re not making the cut.

Damn Susan, guess those “chauvinistic pigs” were right again. Seems like that is common in your life by the vigor in which you attack. Nonetheless, try putting as much zest into something you know; you may find it rewarding. Had you known the first thing about football and talent you would know that the Bucs actually have a very talented and deep receiving corps consisting of a nice mix of youth and veteran leadership. Otherwise, you were spot-on with your comments. We did win a SB with the likes of Meshawn, McHoldout and Jureviscious you know.

Susan, very few teams have multiple WR that scare defenses. Besides the Cards, Colts, cincy, and Lions not many other teams have 2 great WRs. Look at the playoffs last year, beside moss and maybe welker who do the patriots have to scare defenses. Besides burress, who do the Giants have, besides TO who do the cowboys have, besides jennings, who does GB have, and the Chargers dont even have a great WR. Tampa was 16th last yr in passing. how could you be 16th in passing and be in the bottom 5?

Susan,
I was just trying to give you some respect !! But now I can see that you are just an hypocrit. You say shut up unless you have good things to say about the Bucs. And then you go and say the Bucs suck at WR. Thats is total hypocritical. God don’t like hypocrits Susan. I prey for YOU !!! Practice what you preach.
I have nothing but nice things to say about the Bucs, unlike you I’m a true Bucs fan and support our WRs to the end. I was defending them by your dumb a$$ statment.

First, Todd (sweetheart?) wow - I can tell you are a shovanistic pig by your comment. Hey everyone, shut up unless you only say good things about the Bucs right.
Pray for a Super Bowl? Shove your prayer for the Super Bowl and pray for your wife, A-hole.
The Bucs do suck at wide receiver when compared to the rest of the league. They are in the bottom third, talent/statisticaly speaking. Maybe even the bottom five.
Besides 38 year old Galloway and maybe Bryant who will scare opposing defenses at the wide receiver spot?
Lets all pray for Todd.
God, forgive Todd he is an A-hole.
Amen.

idaho,
Nice post !!! I agree with you. Williams will make his come back this season. I don’t think he will start the first game but he will be returning. And Graham will be going back to where he use to be. DUNN and BENNETT will take care of most of the load. COME ON WILLIAMS I STILL BELIEVE IN YOU !!!! “SUPER BOWL BOUND”

A fumble is a fumble, a drop is a drop. It doesn’t matter if you get hit by a truck. Look at what a handful of dropped passes did to Michael Clayton, whether he was injured or not. People, coaches, everybody turned on him, like a lynch mob. OMG did I just say that politically incorrect statement. Well at least I wasn’t referring to Tiger Woods, the Hockey Basher. This is a case where perception is reallity. I wish Amarri the best, and doubt he drops another one, or has it stripped, like that makes a difference. Go Bucs!

Quentin,
I was just going by what I read on here and of course they didn’t give us the whole story. But it still don’t change the decision on Amarri he won’t even make it to training camp.
Susan,
The Bucs don’t suck at WR lets see how they do this season before we come up with crazy comments like that okay sweetheart. You are right on, on everything else you said. Lets prey for a super bowl win this season. Take care
Posted by Quentin, Tampa, FL on 06/17 at 10:23 PM
He didn’t just drop it for no reason, Buchanon stripped it from him.
“I was trying to switch the ball over to my right hand from my left hand and getting my stiff arm out, because the defender was coming from the left side,” Jackson said. “Right when I switched, he hit it. So I fumbled. I had to run back and get my ball back. I knocked it back out of Phillip’s hand and scooped it back.”

The Bucs suck at Wide receiver, but not bad enough for this kid to make it. I think Amari will look great in a Tampa Bay Storm uni…
Thanks for your contributions at USF. You played well for us.
Take care.

BigBucFan,
My point exactly. What makes it worse than just a droped pass is that he actually caught it and THEN he drops it with no presure on him. What a idiot. Thats definitly not going to keep you around to long, I don’t care how many push-ups you do. I wish him luck though. He just totally is not going to cut it right now. This experience might make him try harder next season.
Posted by BigBucFan, Sarasota on 06/17 at 07:42 PM
Of all the screwups a rookie can make. Dropping the ball here is the one thing you don’t want to do. Fall down, trip, break a leg, lose your spleen, cut the cheese, forget an assignment, anything, but don’t drop the ball Amarri. He must not know the Bucs’ recent history of dropped balls. It’s intollerable. How many games lost because of dropped passes? I hoped the Sarasota longshot might just make the practice squad, but it ain’t gonna happen. Keep working out & try again next season...or go to Atlanta or
Sin-cinatti.

The only WRs in this years draft that was worth taking was Donnie Avery and Dexter Jackson. Next year will be better.
Posted by todd, PSJ, FL. on 06/17 at 07:22 PM
NO WAY Amarri beats out: J.Galloway
D.Jackson
A.Bryant
I.Hilliard
M.Clayton
P.Warren
M.Stovall
A couple of them might be getting old but they can still out play Amarri. 1 or 2 of those that I listed is going to be on the way out the door also because we are not going to leave 7 WRs on the roster when the season starts.
We need a team right now to try and defend our home field in the Super Bowl. If anybody thinks Amarri is going to take us there your out of your mind. Next season is when we really start changing our WR core when there will be better talent in the draft.

Your definition of stacked would be a 38 yr old, a 37 yr old, a 1st rd who has not returned to form, a 3rd rd who needs to step up, unproven rookie, a guy who hasn’t played football in a year (paris and bryant). He has every chance to make the team if he can keep up his intensity and make sure he minimizes mistakes. But Johnson sounds good. McCown sounds like he is really trying to show that he is the QB of the future. At least until johnson is ready.
Posted by todd, PSJ, FL. on 06/17 at 03:24 PM
Amarii Jackson isn’t going to make the team, we are already stacked at that possition.
Sounds like Josh Johnson did really well. I truely believe he is going to start sooner then everybody expects. Maybe even next year sometime.
Chris Simms, We just need to get rid of that cry baby silver spoon in mouth PUNK !!
Earnest Graham, I’m glad he decied to show up and try and work things out like a man instead of sitting out like a cry baby. The only way you are going to get any respect from the front office is show up to work and be a team player. Thats where you get paid.

ERIC CULLISON,
I told you so. He wouldn’t even make it to training camp.
