Bucs general manager Bruce Allen said Coach Jon Gruden cancelled today’s practice as a reward for the players participation in the offseason workouts.
“We’re very pleased with what we were able to accomplish in the offseason,” Allen said.
Allen also addressed other offseason issues, including Jake Plummer. Allen said the team does not discuss publicly their disciplinary actions, but Plummer is subject to fines for missing the mandatory minicamp sessions. Allen added he hopes Plummer shows up at training camp, but the team has not “missed a beat” at the quarterback position without him here.
Other critical positions were addressed in the offsesason, Allen said, including the safety position. The Bucs drafted a couple of players that added depth and can push starters Will Allen and Jermaine Phillips for playing time. The team looked at former Jacksonville safety Donovin Darius, but Allen said they are “comfortable where we’re at now.”
Some nagging injuries to starters, including Simeon Rice and Brian Kelly, should not prevent them from being ready for the first training camp practice on July 27. Allen said the only player who would not be ready when camp opens is defensive end Charles Bennett. Bennett injured his right knee in workouts last week and is a candidate for the Physically Unable to Perform List.

I am getting excited to see what the Bucs put on the field this year . I don’t expect a super bowl run but i see and offense that will get better as the year goes on , the line will have to gel early and play well . I think they have the right mix of veterns and young talent along the line . If simeon is healthy and Gaines Adams rushing from the other side the pass rush will be better . I have faith in Monte that he will get the most out of his defensive players . I t could be an interesting year .

i’m with you! I hear a lot of nonsense out here in the west about desperation and bad decisions with the people we’ve taken, but i can’t wait. interestingly, i think some changes in the offense might be a replacement for Pittman and even Clayton losing his spot to Stovall and Boston… yes that’s right Boston!!!
this is going to be a fun year!
