Bucs Release First Depth Chart

Posted Aug 4, 2008 by Ira Kaufman

Tampa Bay’s initial depth chart of the summer is short on surprises, but there are some interesting developments.

Luke McCown is listed ahead of Brian Griese as Jeff Garcia’s primary backup at QB, followed by Chris Simms and rookie Josh Johnson. McCown had some good moments for the Bucs last year, including a superb effort at New Orleans that effectively wrapped up the NFC South title. Griese, in his second stint with Coach Jon Gruden, has a strong grasp of Tampa Bay’s offensive playbook.

Veterans Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard top the WR chart, backed by Michael Clayton and Maurice Stovall, while free agent TE John Gilmore, a superior blocker, is listed No. 2 behind Alex Smith. Another free agent, ex-Gator standout Ben Troupe, is listed No. 3 at TE ahead of Jerramy Stevens, who will miss the first two regular-season games due to suspension.

At LDE, veteran Kevin Carter has held off 2007 club sack leader Greg White for the top spot and Jimmy Wilkerson is listed as the primary backup to DE Gaines Adams on the right side, followed by Marques Douglas.

Ryan Nece, who lost his starting strong-side LB job to Cato June last year, has dropped to No. 3 behind June and second-year pro Quincy Black.

I recognize that I am probably in the minority, but I love Brian Griese and am excited that he can play with a team that matches his talents with a coach who understands his assets. He can complete 70% of his passes, and one year he had a 19-4 TD-Int ratio, which I believe may be the best ever in the NFL. Chicago did not use him well—he was benched after being player of the week because he was viewed by some as smarter than the offensive coordinator. It was a real mess up there. Anyway, I just want to see him get a fair shot, which I don’t think he has ever had.
