Bucs Release First Depth Chart

Posted Aug 4, 2008 by Ira Kaufman

Updated Aug 4, 2008 at 01:34 PM

Tampa Bay’s initial depth chart of the summer is short on surprises, but there are some interesting developments.

Luke McCown is listed ahead of Brian Griese as Jeff Garcia’s primary backup at QB, followed by Chris Simms and rookie Josh Johnson. McCown had some good moments for the Bucs last year, including a superb effort at New Orleans that effectively wrapped up the NFC South title. Griese, in his second stint with Coach Jon Gruden, has a strong grasp of Tampa Bay’s offensive playbook.

Veterans Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard top the WR chart, backed by Michael Clayton and Maurice Stovall, while free agent TE John Gilmore, a superior blocker, is listed No. 2 behind Alex Smith. Another free agent, ex-Gator standout Ben Troupe, is listed No. 3 at TE ahead of Jerramy Stevens, who will miss the first two regular-season games due to suspension.

At LDE, veteran Kevin Carter has held off 2007 club sack leader Greg White for the top spot and Jimmy Wilkerson is listed as the primary backup to DE Gaines Adams on the right side, followed by Marques Douglas.

Ryan Nece, who lost his starting strong-side LB job to Cato June last year, has dropped to No. 3 behind June and second-year pro Quincy Black.

Why is it always a surprise if Luke McCown does well?  Yes, he is inconsistant.  Yes, he almost lost the game at New Orleans before a bone-headed play call by New Orlean’s head coach game McCown a second chance to win (and he did it).

Griese will have to outplay him, plain and simple in order to be #2.  Griese is more consistant than McCown, but as usual, McCown has more athleticism and therefore has a lot of upside if he can stop making sloppy mistakes.  Of course, after three years in Cleveland and another three in Tampa, he better stop them soon or he is going to run out of chances and out of a job in the NFL.  Fumbling two snaps today was not a step in the right direction.

I still think Griese will take the second string job. This list is probably made more to stimulate more competition amongst the players; to see how they react to adversity. It was put out because the NFL mandates it.

Newsflash Sam,

McCown played 1 season in Cleveland and now 3 here in Tampa.

McCown won the game for us in New Orleans and was outstanding against Houston and Carolina.  He has the talent to become a great NFL QB if given the chance.

Keep thinking that Kurt, Griese is terrible and his play has only declined since 2004 (the last time he was actually decent in the NFL).  Luke McCown has everything it takes to be an outstanding NFL QB, except experience and if Griese’s experience has proven anything… .it’s that he IS NOT outstanding.

griese will be #3 at best. in chicago he was behind orton and grossman and we know how bad they suck. mccown is taking all the first team reps so what would even suggest that greise would become #2? heres a refresher BG-no higher than a 79 qb rating over the last 3yrs and has thrown more ints than tds and had 9 fumbles over the last 3yrs.mccown does not have stats over the last 3years but last season 91qb rating, more tds than ints, and the only down side is his 3 fumbles. this is a what have you done for me lately league and mccown has done the most recently.BG is on the downward slope towards the end of his career and mccown is still in the early stages of his..

i dont think ike will be the #2 this season. he will be mr 3rd down again. he does not have the athletic ability of stovall, bryant,or clayton anymore. he is still the best route runner of the group, but his stats have never been great and he showed some slowing in his age.  i really hope someone else steps up into the #2 spot. in my opinion ike is a great #3 and an excellent 3rd down guy but not a great #2. i said it 3months ago and ill say it again: look out for clayton! he seems to be over his woes and it is a contract year for him.

Couldn’t agree with you more Brandon!  I am a Luke fan, and believe, with more experience, he will be an outstanding NFL qb!

Trust me; I would love to see Luke take the first string job so that we can move on with a franchise QB, but from what I’ve seen at practice, he’s just not playing as well as Griese. I imagine you guys are going off what you think instead of what you see on the field. Luke consistently makes mistakes whereas Griese has been playing extremely well. Not to mention that he does own the best Tampa Bay QB rating and an 11-5 record as a starter within Gruden’s system. Instead of having your blinders on; think about it objectively if you can. I’m fine either way; I’m just saying…

I hope Clayton takes the #2 WR spot from Ike.  I like Ike, but Clayton needs to be the guy he was as a rookie.  Too much talent to waste on the bench or even off the team all together.

I like Griese. Using Chicago as a guage to how well a QB does is just a bad barometer. Griese has done well, owns many records for the Broncos (including single season QB rating,) posted a 14-2 record with them once, etc. He’s clearly the better QB at this stage in his career. Luke has the skills but makes boneheaded moves and just plain doesn’t win games. He barely beat out Gradkowski people…remember? Actually Grad started ahead of him last year for the Redskins game and then they went to McCown, who only won 1 game which was given to us by G Adams by forcing R Bush to make a boneheaded toss! How come none of you remember anything. Brandon has no blog-cred anyway (see article on Galloway & high school QB.)

I’m a different Kurt, but I agree with the Tampa Kurt for all the same reasons. I saw the first couple of practices and Griese was head and shoulders the better QB. He just seems to play effortlessly. He is a system QB and I believe he gets Gruden’s system, maybe better than anybody else on the team. Clayton looked very sharp as did the rest of our receivers. He should be the number two, but Ike is a #1 draft pick for a reason. Also remember, Galloway and Clayton were the #1 WR tandem in the NFL the second half of 2004 when Griese took over the helm. McCown? Not so much…

I have to say, although McCown came out guns smoking, he did everything he could to lose the NO game in the second half last year; especially that safety he gave up(remember that Brandon?) Furthermore, as Bo stated, if it weren’t for Gaines’ game saving play (which is where the credit duly lies) and a really good running game (I believe Graham ran the winning TD in from 14 yards out,) we would have lost that game. So I disagree that McCown “won” that game for us. Griese is by far the most accomplished and ready to start of the backups. I believe personally he will be our starter (and will pick up from his 11-5 record here) once Garcia goes down.

It certainly is a matter of opinion as to how someone plays, but with your strong statements in support of Griese and “downing” of Luke, that Pewter Report reports that Luke has played MUCH better in practice than Griese!  In fact, it is also interesting that in the first depth chart release (which I realize means very little) that Luke is ahead of Griese.
As to “don’t we remember”; don’t YOU remember the offense in Luke’s FIRST start as a BUC the offense had the 6th best offensive performance IN THEIR HISTORY??!!!
Remember Luke is a young qb and will make mistakes as he gains experience.  Griese doesn’t have that excuse.

You Kurts have attended all these practices and yet Gruden still currently has McCown as the #2 and your precious Griese as #3… Could you be wrong? I don’t care what kind of record Griese owns from the 04 season, we stunk and he threw numerous pick 6’s that lost games for us.  Then we started off 4-1 in 05 (he was 9-6 as a starter, not 11-5) despite Griese, he did everything he could in the Minnesota, Detroit, New York and Green Bay games to throw the games away and we were lucky to win despite his crappy performances.

Por (Brandon Short) on August 04, 2008 (Suggest removal)

As for McCown, I recall him being pinpoint in NO with the major error being a missed audible by Galloway (not McCown), then against Houston he started off 16 for his first 16 and then he nearly led us to victory against San Francisco AND Carolina despite playing with BACKUPS!  This guy has major league potential and has shown that he doesn’t make the same mistake twice whereas Griese does make the same mistake twice, three times, four and so on…. plus he is old, was never very athletic to start with and has only gotten less athletic (and he’s injury-prone).  We know how good Griese can be, McCown has star potential that only needs experience to develop.

Por (Brandon Short) on August 04, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Bo, you have no credibility whatsoever, Grads didn’t stzrt against the Redskins and McCown only didn’t play because he had the flu and like I said how do you figure Griese has a 11-5 record with us when he only started 10 games in 04 and went 4-6 and then went 4-1 in 05? I was wrong earlier, he is 8-7 lifetime as a Buc starter, not the 11-5 you misstated. And his great QB rating and leading of Denver came in 2000, a season in which the oft-injured Griese only managed to start 10 games and a season in which the Broncos ONLY went 11-5, and the team was 6-3 in games he started and played past the 1st quarter (NOT 14-2 like you said).  Who lacks credibility?  You do, Bo, you have none, just lies and BS.

I dont see why some people think Griese is so better than McCown. Griese hasent done nothing good in 3 years and in practice obviously since hes the 3rd string. Some of you are talking about how great he was when he was with the Bucs,he was only 9-7 averaging 1.6 TDs and 1.2 INTs as a starter NOT GOOD. McCown was good last year,he won the NO game throwing the game winning TD. He probably would of won the CAR game too if we had the starters in.

If you go to NFL.com you can get the factual stats on Griese and his tenure with the Bucs. I’m not going to argue what is reality with you. Even though the team is in Orlando, does not mean you are on some fantasyland tour. I will say that NFL.com has Griese’s record at 10-8, but I believe they are counting games he did not start nor finsish. I like Luke just as much as you and hope he can be the starter one day, but I choose by stats, not feelings. Credibiltiy is based on facts, not emotion.

A little factoid…Griese was qb when Clayton had his monster rookie year. But what gets lost is the only reason Clayton was primary target was Galloway went down and second option was ‘Charles -I want more money because I am so good and now can’t be found- Lee’

C’mon boys…we all know Luke McCown will NEVER be the starter here.  Unless Garcia gets hurt, of course.  When Garcia is ready to walk, which is likely after this year, we’ll go get someone - likely in a trade for a young guy [like Brady Quinn].  Of course, McCown might get a few starts while we get the new kid ready, but that will be temporary.

While i think McCown has the tools, I just don’t think he’s polished enough to have great success in this offense.

Kurt,

If you go to profootballreference.com it lists every game Griese started or just appeared in.  You may be thinking Griese won the game against New Orleans, but Simms started, so technically it was Simms in the Win-Column, but to make up for it, technically Griese got the win against the Dolphins even though Simms was in for over half the game.

If you like stats so much, thenm why don’t you look at all of Griese’s stats, from his 2000 season on and you’ll see he only had 2 seasons where he was above average and he’s never had a season where he started all of his team’s game.  Simms actually had better stats against much better teams in 05 than Griese, now you’re not going to argue that Simms should start are you?

Por (Brandon Short) on August 05, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Here’s the thing, sometimes stats lie and relying solely on stats is for losers that don’t understand the game.  THere is far more to the game than just stats.

Still stats, do little to disprove the fact that Griese is an aging China-doll with little arm strength and poor mobility who hasn’t even played well in 4 seasons.  Hell, Steve McNair was still playing well 4 years ago… you don’t think we should bring him in too do you?  How about Culpepper or Trent Green?

Por (Steven W. Hair) on August 05, 2008 (Suggest removal)

Griese will, more often than not, throw that game-ending interception.  He looks great, smooth when he is not doing that, but he does it time and again.  It stopped when Chris took over, and McCown did not have that tendency.  Griese will get you beat at the end of the game, and that is not acceptable, no matter what else.  I really don’t know what people have to criticize McCown for; he clearly played well when given the opportunity.
