Bucs Received Trade Offers For Simms

TAMPA - It turns out there is a trade market for Chris Simms after all. Or maybe we should say there WAS a trade market for Simms.

The Bucs received offers from several teams interested in trading for Simms during last weekend’s draft, including at least two offers from teams willing to give them a sixth-round draft pick and one from a team willing to give them a seventh-round selection for the beleaguered quarterback. Needless to say, no deal was struck.

Why is anyone’s guess, but the likelihood is the Bucs were afraid they would not get true value for Simms. Why take a sixth-round draft pick for Simms when he could be worth a fifth-, fourth- or maybe even third-round selection? The problem, though, is the Bucs may never learn what Simms true trade value is, especially now that they’ve added yet another quarterback to their already crowded stable of them.

The addition of Josh Johnson brought to seven the number of quarterbacks currently on the Bucs roster. With the Bucs planning to take only five to training camp the entire football world knows that at least two will have to lopped off the roster before camp begins. As a result, teams interested in Simms can now simply sit back and wait for him to be released.

There’s a chance, though, that the Bucs will hold onto Simms, possibly even through training camp. After all, they passed on several chances to trade him and Brian Griese during the draft, all while trying to peddle Bruce Gradkowski. It could well be then that the Bucs want Simms to be one of the five quarterback who goes to camp with them this summer.

That may not sit too well with Simms. He’s been working out on his own for months now and he skipped the first round of voluntary workouts last month, seemingly in an effort to get the Bucs to move him. It’s possible, though, that the Bucs see him as being far more valuable to them than Gradkowski or maybe even McCown and now plan to hold on to him, at least for a while.

Whatever the answer, we should know it soon. The Bucs are expected to meet in an effort to try and resolve their crowded quarterback situation just as soon as they are done running their rookies through their paces during this coming weekend’s rookie minicamp. We’re hearing that solving the Simms saga is objective one, so a solution could some sooner rather than later.

Let`s not get carried away here Chris Simms is not the best QB here he does have the arm strength to play in this league but like most spoiled kids never had to apply himself even in college if you will recall he couldn`t beat out a Flutie clone in Applewhite. Garcias journey to the NFL was one of working hiss ass off like Moon through the CFL as a back up and then given the chance to compete proved himself on what matters the most SUNDAY not with nice throws in practice ala Simms

If Gruden didn’t doesn’t want Simms, then why did he waste a draft pick the year he came out. Gruden loves to think he can develope QB’s, but he can only coach veterans. If I was a QB in the draft or FA, and Gruden wanted me, I’d stay as far from him as possible. You can’t develope a great QB if you never were one yourself.

Nothing is going to change with the Bucs until they get rid of Gruden.
He took a team that Dungy built to the Super Bowl then totally destroyed it.
Gruden has no idea how to rebuild a team.

Look at the games where Chris was sacked 2 or less times, he’s 6-0 and then look at the games where he’s sacked 2 or more times, he’s 0-4. Those stats speak for themself. This kid is a proven winner when he get protection.  Did we also forget that this kid won 3 games on the road against Division rivals as a ROOKIE!! ( well he really wasn’t a rookie, but it was the first time he got to start). Simms is a different QB behind the Shot Gun formation and he’s a proven winner when he gets protection and those are facts!!

I would like to see Chris Simms behind the new and improved offensive line before I give up on him.  However, if he wants out he should be given the chance to pursue other opportunities.

i agree with nick and chris~ Somebody in this organization, loves Simms~and i dont think its gruden? Gruden screwed Simms? 3 step drops? throw the ball? his Delivery is totally opposite that?
Gruden~did not put Simms in a position to suceed?
I just have the feelin Gruden doesnt want Simms as the QB?
If thats the case? well? then?

With the addition of Johnson or at least knowledge that they wanted to draft him in the 5th, should have been enough information for the Bucs to trade Simms.  I have him graded at a value of a 6th round draft pick.  That’s all!  Nothing more, nothing less.  The Bucs need to learn to CUT their losses faster with players who do not CUT IT.  Simms isn’t a starter and probably never will be or would have been.  He simply has a strong but inaccurate arm, like three or four dozen other bench warming QB’s in the league.

bucs fan, The question wasn’t for the Bucs, it was for all the Mike Jenkins fans that can’t get over it.
Can you give me an good answer on the question if your so smart.

Pleasantly surprised to see that Simms had a little bit of worth, Very interesting to see who in the heck is going to be on the final roster....As for buc fan, How about some football insight rather than bust on someone for a spelling err......You are a pencil neck douche!

Hey Dan,
It’s doubt---not dought.  What the bucs need is input from someone with a 6th grade level education.

Any answers??????????

Sorry to change the subject here. But this question goes out to all you Mike Jenkins fans that just can’t get over it, here it is. Why did the Bills and Cards pass Jenkins by if he is so called the #1 corner in the nation? You have to remember 2 other teams passed him up too. No dought the kid has talent.

Jason, I cannot believe you would say Simms doesn’t have the “bawls”.  He ruptured a spleen during a game and continued to play.  He may not be the answer to this team, but he certainly has “bawls”.  I agree with many that he has never had the chance to play in the shotgun or the improved O-line.  Look for Johnson to spend the year on the practice squad and Simms, if healthy, to make the team.

Chris Simms will bite us in the butt eventually. What is with all the project players? Why are we drafting guys that don’t have a chance to make it like the San Diego QB we just drafted. We love science projects! What a waste of a pick. Gruden should pick up a few more QB’s to make it an even 10.

pewterreport said the same thing about bucs getting offer for simms, the only difference was it was the panthers who wanted to trade for simms and the bucs didn’t want simms to go to a team in there division. the panthers 1st offer was for a 7th round pick then they changed to a 6th found pick

Posted by  Kyle Smith, Arizona on 04/30  at  11:12 AM

I agree with many of you that say Simms should get a chance to play behind our improved O-line. He is a very accurate deep ball passer, but let’s not forget that the west coast system that Gruden uses is not really suited for him. Simms has a slow release and he is not a solid passer when he rolls out. Simms could be a real beast in more of a shot gun O with three solid receivers. Many players are drafted these days by the system a team operates in. The west coast style will probably never be the right system for Simms. So, does he deserve a shot...yes; let’s see if he is any better with this improved O-line. Simms is a good kid and he at least deserves a chance

If the Bucs get rid of Cris Simms, they are making abig mistake. You have to give him a chance to see what he can do, when he is healthy. He is still young enough to be the future starter for the Bucs.

I would play Simms before I would Griese. This team is different than the last one Simms quarterbacked , biggest reason is the better offensive line .

Posted by  skyrider, walton beach on 04/30  at  10:06 AM

I know how you all feel about Chris Simms and it can be frustrating, but however, we’ve invested a lot of time into this guy and I think he’s capable of leading this team, it just wasn’t his time then...but now that he’s healthier I think he’s more mature and his time is coming around.  Don’t give up too soon, when you do...you lose gems that could possibly be future SB MVPs ...you know what I’m talking about!!!

I think that it is likely the end of the road for both Gradkowski and McCown. Lets face it, they both were horrible except for in about a game each. Obviously the Bucs think that Simms has much more potential than both of them (trade potential or just potential to play for the bucs). Picking Josh Johnson makes it clear to me that the Bucs have now made him their young project after not finding the promise in McCown and Gradkowski. It would not be that surprising at this point to see the Bucs go with Garcia, Griese and Simms and place Johnson on the practice squad. I believe that McCown will only be on the team if they are able to trade Simms for a 4th rounder or better. Otherwise, why wouldnt Gruden keep all three of those guys?

Posted by  Chris Burke, Nashville on 04/30  at  09:42 AM

Nick, I agree with you.  What has changed in the last two years since Simms played. 1) a shot gun formation which is huge for a 6’4’’QB. 2) a much improved O-line 3) a 2nd round draft pick WR that runs a 4.3.  Simms is the only QB on the roster with a strong enough arm to hit 4.3 speed going deep to stretch the field.

Posted by  patrick dotson, tampa,fl on 04/30  at  09:32 AM

i think we should keep simms...he knows the system and he has a good arm...i also feel we should keep him because our o line is alot better than 2 yrs ago and we now have the shotgun in our offense...the glazers have put to much money into this kid to just let him go...i feel they should at least give him a chance in training camp to see how he has come along and see if hes a 100 percent...cause if he is 100 percent and looks good..we could get a higher draft pick for him or we could just keep him...we will just have to wait and see…

Posted by  Nick, Cape Coral on 04/30  at  09:23 AM

Lets face it, Simms is by far the better QB on this roster if he’s healthy.  Has the better arm, can give us 8-10 years at the position and can hit a WR in stride 60-70 yards downfield unlike Garcia who threw 5-6 where Joey had to come back to the ball.  If Gruden would have given this kid the shot gun formation and better protection we wouldn’t be having this conversation. My money is on Chris, hope he get his chance because he might be the future if HEALTHY!!
