TAMPA - It turns out there is a trade market for Chris Simms after all. Or maybe we should say there WAS a trade market for Simms.
The Bucs received offers from several teams interested in trading for Simms during last weekend’s draft, including at least two offers from teams willing to give them a sixth-round draft pick and one from a team willing to give them a seventh-round selection for the beleaguered quarterback. Needless to say, no deal was struck.
Why is anyone’s guess, but the likelihood is the Bucs were afraid they would not get true value for Simms. Why take a sixth-round draft pick for Simms when he could be worth a fifth-, fourth- or maybe even third-round selection? The problem, though, is the Bucs may never learn what Simms true trade value is, especially now that they’ve added yet another quarterback to their already crowded stable of them.
The addition of Josh Johnson brought to seven the number of quarterbacks currently on the Bucs roster. With the Bucs planning to take only five to training camp the entire football world knows that at least two will have to lopped off the roster before camp begins. As a result, teams interested in Simms can now simply sit back and wait for him to be released.
There’s a chance, though, that the Bucs will hold onto Simms, possibly even through training camp. After all, they passed on several chances to trade him and Brian Griese during the draft, all while trying to peddle Bruce Gradkowski. It could well be then that the Bucs want Simms to be one of the five quarterback who goes to camp with them this summer.
That may not sit too well with Simms. He’s been working out on his own for months now and he skipped the first round of voluntary workouts last month, seemingly in an effort to get the Bucs to move him. It’s possible, though, that the Bucs see him as being far more valuable to them than Gradkowski or maybe even McCown and now plan to hold on to him, at least for a while.
Whatever the answer, we should know it soon. The Bucs are expected to meet in an effort to try and resolve their crowded quarterback situation just as soon as they are done running their rookies through their paces during this coming weekend’s rookie minicamp. We’re hearing that solving the Simms saga is objective one, so a solution could some sooner rather than later.

i think holding on to simms for a while makes perfect sense. we still do not know how well his body has healed. who knows he may even surprise gruden. i still think parcells is interested in simms

DUNGY IS LIKE B. OBAMA THE MEDIA LOVES HIM BUT HE IS TOTALLY OVER RATED. HERE IS A QUESTION? WHO WON THE SUPER BOWL IN TAMPA? ANY WAY YOU SPIN IT. IT WAS NOT DUNGY———IT WAS GRUDEN. LAST TIME I CHECKED NEITHER DUNGY OR GRUDEN WHERE DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS….. HIS NAME IS MONTY GIFFIN.

I’m sick of hearing about inheriting someone else’s team! I’m pretty sure unless you are coaching an expansion team in its inaugural season, YOU ARE COACHING A TEAM SOMEONE ELSE STARTED. If we look through out history you could make the case that many have inherited teams from their predecessors. Gruden is doing Great, so was Dungy.
I don’t think Dungy should have been fired, but on the same token Gruden has done admirably, and I don’t know of any coaches (Bill Parcells especially) who would adopt the salary cap fiasco Rich McKay left the Bucs.
Get behind the coach of your team or become an Indianapolis fan you cowards!
This ship will gladly sail forward without you!

Sam Keller started out at Arizona State, lost his job to Rudy Carpenter and transferred to Nebraska where he continued his rise to mediocrity. He’s training camp meat. He’ll last about a week.

Sim’s is evendently unhappy with the situation if so it may be time to make him happy by trading him.
Posted by Bruce Conley, on 05/01 at 07:37 PM
I think if Sim’s is not satisfide then it’s time to let him go to another teem if he wonts to.

honestly…gruden and dungy are great coaches…just different styles…gruden is in your face and dungy is laid back…if they werent great coaches niether would be coaching as long as they have and they both wouldnt have championships either…yes dungy did “help” build a team…but some of that team WAS already here when dungy took over…so in all reality dungy and gruden inherited teams…gruden just gave the offense the kick in the ##### it needed…so face it…both coaches are great…both have won championships…but the fact of it is….gruden did it at a younger age…GO BUCS BABY!

Dex Fields, Grudens job on the field
is to call plays. He is not on the field running routes, catching the ball and all of that stuff. It’s not his fault for drop passes or throwing interceptions or fumbling. He has been calling plays right. Now weather the team is executing the plays or not is not his fault. Come on everybody get real!!!!

I didn’t want to get involved, but that superbowl defense score alot of points that year. That offense was not that great-the defense always gave our offense good field position. The subject about who drafted who-Allen has made alot of bad picks on both side of the ball-too many! That defense won the the superbowl and won over half the games that season. So Mr. Thomas-Allen and Gruden did win with someone else team-read what you wrote! We have not won a playoff game since the superbowl-what have Gruden done that is so great-nothing.Gruden haven’t got the job done!

Well here we go again with the QB changes. I was hoping that Simms would had been traded. If we traded Simms then that Money would have been free up to give Garcia the money He deserved. I have seen so many qb’s come and go. I still don’t understand why in the world did we let Steve Young Go! I would have select another player than Vinny the QB. Lets trade “G”, McCown, & Simms or let them go. They could had some value.

Mr.Thomas…you hit a bulleye with that comment…kudos to you sir…i get so sick and tired of hearin gruden won the super bowl with dungys team…correct me if im wrong but like 25 players on the super bowl roster came here the same year gruden did…dungy will be and has always been a good coach…will never take that from him…but…he COULDNT GET THE JOB DONE…
at least produced one or more players every year to go over a thousand yards recieving or rushing…dungy only did that 3 times..just some food for thought for all the gruden haters… BUCS

Wow. Some of you people are rediculous. Travis Lynam, Gruden didn’t draft Chris Simms, then-GM Rich McKay did. George Dorsett, Gruden created enough juice on offense with new Bucs like Pittman and McCardell and set a franchise record 15 wins inclding a Championship. And it has been proven in Tampa year after year that the Cover 2 isn’t Tony Dungy’s defense. It’s Monte Kiffin’s. One more thing that ignorant people do not know, Dungy didn’t draft Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch or even sign Hardy Nickerson. Rich McKay and Sam Wyche did. So in reality Dungy inherited some Hall of Fame quality players and still couldn’t get a home game after Wild Card Weekend.

as the old saying goes….the most popular player on any team is the BACKUP quarterback

George, you are an idiot. Dungy’s team?
Dungy’s defense but not the offence. Gruden added 5 starters on offense. What did Dungy inherit in Indy? A complete offense!

It doesn’t matter who’s back there. Fans are going to jump on which ever QB is on a hot streak. Where wins are few and far between we’ll crown anyone that will break into the W column in the Monday paper…

To all you sitting at home on your fat lazy ##### bashing Jon let me tell something Jon is a tremendous football coach and like other people who have a large self esteem sometimes egos will clash like they did with Key and some of the media in the bay area but make no mistake about his work ethic and abilities to coach football games.

Gradkowski on the other hand is a 5 foot nothing you should be selling insurance or waiting table because this guy just SUCKS very few people under 6 foot can play QB in the NFL and I believe he has shown that he is not one that can soooooooo do the right thing here and move on without this guy
