Bucs, Raiders Talking Trade

Posted Apr 17, 2007 by Katherine Smith

Updated Apr 17, 2007 at 10:46 AM

How bad do the Bucs want Calvin Johnson? So much so, General Manager Bruce Allen is talking with his former employer Al Davis about a possible trade.

According to Yahoo Sports, the Bucs and the Oakland Raiders owner have been discussing a trade for the Raiders No. 1 pick. It would be a costly deal for Tampa Bay, maybe even all of their first four picks.

Knowing how much Davis got for Coach Jon Gruden when Tampa Bay made the deal for him in 2002 (two first round and two second round picks), it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Davis is asking for a lot. And given Johnson’s credentials and potential for greatness, it wouldn’t be far fetched to believe the Bucs would give up all of their first day picks for him.

A contingency of Bucs personnel and players, including quarterback Chris Simms, traveled to Atlanta last Friday for the former Georgia Tech receiver’s workout.

If the Bucs do pull off this trade, it will become evident the team is in win now or else mode. Because why else would they mortgage the future by giving up all those picks for one player? If they don’t, perhaps the team learned its lesson about how difficult it is to sustain a playoff-caliber team without draft picks.

Oh please say it ain’t so!! The Raiders are bluffing, they are not going to draft Calving Johnson; The Raiders will draft Jamarcus Russell. As a Bucs fan, I will be very upset if Bruce Allen gives up 4 draft picks just to get Johnson. We need those four picks to rebuild the defense; I think they can still get Johnson with the #4 pick!!

Wow, that would just be ridiculous.  CJ is truly awesome, but is he really worth that much to the Bucs?  The team has too many holes that need to be addressed, especially on D, through the draft to give up such high picks.  If he’s not there at the 4 or even 2 spot, I say trade down.  There are still impact recievers to be had later on, and they could really help out other areas of the team that desperately need an infusion of youth and talent.

This would be the worst trade to happen since ditka gave all picks for ricky williams. Now im not saying that calvin johnson isnt the best player in the draft, but considering there is so many holes elsewhere to be filled that unless where only gonna give up one of our second round picks its not worth it. Sidney Rice will still be there and we can add so much talent all over the place. Lord knows i would love CJ on my team, but to forget about everything else we need for him. i just cant see it happening.

Even if Johnson is picked ahead of us, there will still be quality players left at No. 4.  Joe Thomas, Gaines Adams, Brady Quinn, etc.  This team needs a lot of players.  Picking a receiver helps, but we still need help in all areas on the defense, OL and QB on offense.  Gruden, one player will not make up for all of those holes.

If this would happen.  It would be, without a doubt, the dumbest thing this franchise has ever done.

Calvin Johnson will no doubt be one heck of a WR but a WR alone won’t win too many football games. Johnson is not worth mortgaging the team’s future. Bruce Allen is nothing but Jon Gruden’s do boy and Jon Gruden is nothing but an idiot!!!

Giving up all those picks would be just plain stupid.  If they stay at 4 they are sure to get a great player.
We must rebuild the defense. We need those picks!

C.Johnson would be a good pick at #4, but not by giving up 4 draft picks!  The Bucs defense is in worse shape that the offense!  There are several good Bucs first(4)draft picks there to help make the Bucs a much better team!  I hope that all of this is just some smoke Gruden/Allen screen!!!!!!!!!

As much as I think CJ is the most “outstanding” player over the past four or five years to hit the draft, and as much as I admire John Gruden more than the rest of the “Buc Faithful”, this move would make absolutely NO SENSE! This draft in particular is loaded with solid defensive talent, and as we all know, the Bucs need to improve tremendously on the defensive side of the ball. Granted CJ would make an immediate impact wherever he goes, he alone will not be able to solve all of the problems on the field for the Bucs. This move would set the Bucs even further behind the rest of the league; more so than they already are right now. DON’T DO IT GRUDEN!

As much as I would love to see Calvin Johnson in a Buc’s Uniform. I think it would be a serious mastake to trade away the picks you have suggested. We can stay where we are and get an outstanding player or trade down if needed.

I like Calvin Johnson as much as anybody trading to No.1 would cost too much (all first day picks). Trading to NO.2 with Detroit would make more sense but instead off trading draft picks how about older Defense players like Brian Kelly or Shelton Quarles that Rod Marinelli would covet. It would also be wise to trade Jake(the mistake) Plummer. Any of those trades would help the Bucs salary cap in the future.

I don’t like giving up 4 picks to move up three spots. I am a huge Calvin Johnson fan and I think he could be a future hall of famer but we have needs elsewhere other than WR and are in a great position to fill some major needs. Trading up is one thing but trading away so many draft picks might be stupid but if they’re job is riding on this year I can see Bruce and Jon really doing all they can to put together a winning season.

I sure hope this is a ploy by the Buc Brass. If this is pulled off, you can bet the Bucs are stepping back in to the 80’s. It will be a long time before we can enjoy another playoff game, let alone a primetime game.

I really hope the Bucs don’t make a stupid move like that.  We’ve been had by the Raiders once, no need to repeat our mistake of overpaying to Al Davis.

It’d be great to get Calvin Johnson, but if he’s gone, so be it.  Trade down if possible to get more picks and shore up our defense!

I don’t think this is a good idea. Oakland wants a QB, let him have it. Trade your number one with Detroit and maybe add Simion Rice in the deal. We all know they are going to cut him. To give up 4 picks for a good WR is as stupid as giving up your entire draft for Ricky Williams. I am sure you remember that mistake Jon! Don’t make the same. I am a Bucs fan in the midst of many Eagles fans. I don’t want to hear it from them if you make a tart move like this!

I like the suggestion of trading some our older defensive veterans.  Our LB corps could be solid with Nece, Rudd and June.  I would like to keep Bryan Kelly, but he is turning into a problem with his contract concerns.  While you are at it why not Brooks.  He has just enough left to be worth something in trade.

Doesn’t make sense.  The three teams drafting ahead of the BUCS have their own needs, none of which is WR.  The BUCS have other holes to file; i.e. QB, DE, etc.  If we lose out on CJ, so be it.

AL Davis robbed the Bucs one time already,I hope Bruce Allen doesnt let this happen again.

I live in the Atlanta area and I too love Calvin Johnson. I think it would be a huge mistake that would haunt this team for a very long time. Personally I would trade up a spot or stay put is one player really going to that big of a difference? I hope Gruden and Allen don’t make that huge of a mistake because they will be out of here at the end of the season.

This is the most stupid thing i have heard. They have many needs and they not be able to fill them. What if johnson gets hurt and can’t play and what if he can’t adjust to the pro game. look at Detriot and the number of receivers they have taken and they were suppose to be great and then look at how many turned out great - I HAVE NOT HEARD OF ONE YET!!! They need to start re-building the team and not giving away all their draft picks.

What, are you trying to sell papers?  There is no way the Bucs give up that asking price to move into the number one spot.  If they move up at all it will be to two.  This is a joke, I shouldn’t even be responding.  Go Bucs.

Wait a minute - what was that you said?
“If they don’t, perhaps the team learned its lesson about how difficult it is to sustain a playoff-caliber team without draft picks.”  Just who do you think GOT those picks?  The Raiders!!!
Were they not a ‘playoff-caliber’ team when we beat them 3 years ago?  Just because you have the picks dosen’t mean you’ll use them wisely.

I know the BUCS made some stupid free agent moves when Allen first got here but that would be the stupidest thing ever. Yeah we have made some improvements this year in free agency. The BUCS need to start drafting for the future or we might as well bring back the Bucco Bruce uniforms. Yeah CJ is a beast but there is more that we need. One player isn’t going to change our offense. Gruden needs to not make it so complex and get the ball in the endzone. If CJ isn’t there trade down and pick up some more picks and get rid of the 6 and 7th rounders for a high pick to get better talent.

Way to many holes in this team to give up 4 draft picks for any one player. Calvin Johnson would look great in a Bucs uniform but not at that cost.

i have an idea for the bucs and the raiders….since mr.Plummer wants to be a starter and the raiders need one,why not trade plummer to oakland for the first pick, than oakland can still get another qb to back up plummer, brady or russell will be there at 4,and we get johnson and lose no picks…so we both get what we want….both sides win…...
