How bad do the Bucs want Calvin Johnson? So much so, General Manager Bruce Allen is talking with his former employer Al Davis about a possible trade.
According to Yahoo Sports, the Bucs and the Oakland Raiders owner have been discussing a trade for the Raiders No. 1 pick. It would be a costly deal for Tampa Bay, maybe even all of their first four picks.
Knowing how much Davis got for Coach Jon Gruden when Tampa Bay made the deal for him in 2002 (two first round and two second round picks), it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Davis is asking for a lot. And given Johnson’s credentials and potential for greatness, it wouldn’t be far fetched to believe the Bucs would give up all of their first day picks for him.
A contingency of Bucs personnel and players, including quarterback Chris Simms, traveled to Atlanta last Friday for the former Georgia Tech receiver’s workout.
If the Bucs do pull off this trade, it will become evident the team is in win now or else mode. Because why else would they mortgage the future by giving up all those picks for one player? If they don’t, perhaps the team learned its lesson about how difficult it is to sustain a playoff-caliber team without draft picks.

I could see the current administration making a bonehead move like this. Just trade down and take Okoye and another day one pick; it’s real simple. Draft for need not glamor. The draft is deep in WR’s. Hell M Colston was a 7th rounder last year and we already have a big guy in M Stovall that’s going to do fine. Take the defensive tackle; we need it more and they’re harder to find!

If we give up Simms to trade up to #1, and that’s it, then I will be OK with the move… But the story that had the Bucs packaging all their day-one picks in exchange for #1, that one had me concerned. That would just be idiotic.

Calm down George. It’s actually a great idea. Here’s the way it’s going down: Davis needs a QB. Simms is a PERFECT fit for Oakland and the Davis philosophy: of throwing deep. Moss will make Simms a better QB. The Bucs give up their 4th position and Simms, to move up and take Johnson. But they may take Russell. That’s a good deal, even for Al Davis. Simms will start in Oakland. He won’t beat out Garcia here. Garcia is perfect for Gruden’s run and gun.

I realize anything is possible, but this is so far fetched it’s not worth reporting. You must be running dry on story ideas.

Forget that, trading the store for one guy. If anything give them a (one) draft pick any send blondie back to radervill if thats not emough send Bruce Allen and a little cash. Or trade our first pick to Indy and get Coach Dundgy back in the box, so as to build for the futue, now.

This story was reported on Profootballtalk yesterday after originally appearing on Yahoo! Sports. Check the Pewter Report message boards. Scott Reynolds and Jim Flynn, who know what’s going on at One Buc Palace better than anyone, continue to stand by their assertion that the Bucs have no interest in trading up… Consider that this story may have been planted as a smokescreen by another team to create some chaos at the top, or by Al Davis to drive up the price of the first pick.

Absolute LUNACY!! If this trade goes down, this will penalize the BUCS for years. Long after Gruden has departed - this franchise will be paying the price for the “Win Now” menality. Remember what happened to the Saints trading everything for Ricky Williams....

Give me a break! Katherine Smith either needs to get a life (and perspective) or Bruce Allen does.
If they pull the trigger on this I’ll see ya in five years when the Bucs have a chance at success again.
This is either the most ridiculous article ever written or the Bucs have the most ridiculous front office in history.
Neither option is good

Another thing...The Bucs gave up a lot to get Gruden because the ownership had egg on its face because of the Parcells debactle. I use to think you knew what you were talking about. Everytime I read this comment of yours I realize you have no clue. Get real. Stop trying to be edgy.
Posted by Steven Fink, Wahington, NJ on 04/18 at 07:12 AM
Katherine...that is just a dumb comment. There is no way the the Bucs will give up all of there first day picks. C’mon, you’re just stiring thimgs up. Be realistic.

Here we go again! We gave away the draft choices for GRUDEN and have moaned and groaned since then about the future. Does this DO OR DIE effort help for the future? I don’t believe so. Not one palyer can guarantee playoffs or Super Bowl when ther are so many holes to be filled. As I have stated before, OWNERSHIP, please get involved NOW, so we don’t suffer when Gruden and Allen are no longer in Tampa.

lets see 1) we gave oak-town 4 picks 2)we won the superbowl 3)oakland has barely won 20 games in 5 years with those 4 picks. 4) the draft is a crap shot 5) players like CJ are once in a life time 6) we have 9 qb’s and one football trade a few of them for extra picks. bottomline........draft calvin! p.s. we have one of there picks in phillip b!

Sounds like there may be some “Hate and Discontent” in Buc Land! There may be a need for the Bucs to increase their security as soon as possible!!!!!

This sounds like Jon Gruden mis-information. The Glazers would veto this deal if their consultants are awake as this would de-value the team. The offense needs a line that will help the running game and the passing game with less skill at the skill positions. Do not beleive anthing from the mouth of any GM or Head Coach untill the picks are made- all is bull spit and psychology from them till then.

Our offense is not 1 player away from being good (let alone great) and our defense is teetering on being bad. Giving up even 1 second round choice for CJ is too much for the Bucs. We need youth and lots of it. Besides, how great would it be to land Gaines Adam at 4, a solid DT with our first 2nd and a solid safety with our other #2? We could then grab a WR with our third rounder; although I’m hoping Marcus Thomas slips that far because of character problems and the Bucs are able to grab him there. We could use 2 solid DTs for the rotation.

CJ will be a great receiver, but this team has many holes. If we mortgage our entire first day, this team will be in trouble for years to come.
The picks we gave up for Gruden are part of the reason we lack talent right now.

It is beyond far fetched that the Bucs would give up all of their Day 1 picks to move up three positions to No. 1 overall. In fact, it would surpass the Vikings/Cowboys Herschel Walker trade as the worst in NFL history. Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden have already caused most of the Bucs’ faithful to seriously question their personnel decisions. By pulling the trigger on a ridiculous trade like the one you describe, they will erase all doubts as to their complete ineptitude.

why can’t we trade with detroit give them greg spires and give us the number two pick would be a heck of alot cheaper I am sure simeon would play for marinelli that might be somthing we can think about as well but also let us move up for the second round well definately have some play then or trade jake plummer and one of our starters for there second round pick and have three picks that round screw the raiders don’t do business with them

I think someone writing the story is drinking too much Georgia Peach Schnaupps - Gruden can’t be as stupid as Ditka was with Williams. CJ is going to have a clean uniform all year unless they have a line that can protect the QB.

This story reeks of sensationalism! I agree with Christopher Jones on this in that Ms. Smith’s story is far-fetched. Do you really think the Bucs will give all their first day picks to Oakland? I can’t believe that. What’s more likely assuming some of the story is true is a trade involving a swap of picks plus a player or two.

Gruden should watch his back if he makes this move. There is no way people will let this happen. Gruden is and idiot. It took a couple of years to reveal itself. The offensive guru can’t get the Bucs more than 13 points per game. He is also a child when it comes to evaluating talent as well. If Glazers allow the Bucs to make stupid moves they should be held accountable as well.. Burn your tickets....

you have got to be kidding? giving up the draft choices for gruden was insane, if they give up four, yes four draft choices for johnson, then gruden and company should be terminated before the season even begins. are they so afraid that they will lose their jobs, that they will create a long term disaster? if so, it is sad and pathetic. gee, it wasn’t that long ago that Mike Ditka gave away his draft for one player and gee, how to say this, it didn’t work then and it won’t work now. if gruden and his power broker do this madness, then it is time that they walk the plank.

Just wanted to let everyone know in Tampa, I really look foward to playing for you’ll and really think I fit like a shoe. I’ve talked to both Lane Kiffin and John Gruden in the past few days and it looks like a trade up will occur. I can promise you that even though the Buccaneers will be losing a few pics down the road because of this trade up, I will personally make up for this and play everyday to win.

The Glazers have little regard for draft picks, they gave away four premium draft picks for Chuckie. At pick four the Bucs will still get a very good player, maybe Calvin Johnson or maybe OT Joe Thomas. A QB at four could buy Chuckie an extra year or two and you know how Chuckie loves his QBs. Trading down and picking a D-line player makes the most sense, you can then use your extra first round pick for a WR.
