TAMPA—As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue a massive rebuilding plan, the club’s personnel executives find themselves under scrutiny.
By committing to a youth movement following February’s veteran purge, the Bucs are extending new opportunities to inexperienced players who are suddenly thrust into starting roles.
The 2009 season is serving as a showcase for many of Tampa Bay’s premium draft picks of the past few years.
Players like WR Maurice Stovall (2006 third round), S Sabby Piscitelli (2007 second round), LB Quincy Black (2007 third round) and G Jeremy Zuttah (2008 third round) are now being counted on to make a major impact, along with LB Geno Hayes, a sixth-round pick in 2008 who looks like a keeper.
By the end of the season, management will have a much better insight into whether these young players are potential future cornerstones or disappointments.
Members of Tampa Bay’s scouting department are keeping a keen eye on the development of these young Bucs, seeking validation for the selections made on draft weekend.
One thing’s for sure—when former backups are given starter’s minutes, fans, coaches and teammates keep score.
