TAMPA – The Bucs have taken a lot of heat for deciding to rebuild through the draft, but one the Glazer Family’s more lauded and respected contemporaries agrees with their approach.
After allowing his team to let go of veteran stalwarts such linebacker Adalius Thomas, defensive linemen Jarvis Green and Richard Seymour and tight end Ben Watson, Patriots owner Robert Kraft says that building through the draft is the way to go in this day and age.
“It’s a business where you always got to keep looking to the future if you want to win,” Kraft told the Boston Herald. “The only way you’re going to survive in this business is to replenish your team with younger players each year.’’
By holding on to their own selections and obtaining others through trades that usually involve veteran players going elsewhere, the Patriots accumulated 24 draft picks the last two years.
Kraft is hoping about 20 of those players make the Patriots final roster this year, but don’t the get the idea the Patriots are in a full-blown youth movement.
Just as they did a few years ago when they brought in wide receiver Randy Moss and running back Corey Dillon, the Patriots have added some key veterans this year in defensive linemen Gerard Warren, Damione Lewis and receiver Torry Holt.
The Bucs have made similar moves this year by adding safety Sean Jones, guard Keydrick Vincent and receiver Reggie Brown, and that appears to be in keeping with Kraft’s philosophy on building his team.
“The combination of free agency and the salary cap, you’d have to manage your roster like a portfolio,” Kraft said. “You’re always trying to upgrade the bottom half of your roster and you’re trying to keep the upper half at the cutting edge.’’
