The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have to make a decision about Byron Leftwich’s future very soon.
Leftwich signed a two-year deal last year and is slated to receive $3.5 million roster bonus in March. Let me say that again, $3.5 million.
That is a lot of money for a guy who is going to be your backup quarterback. Serious cash for a player you only allowed to have three starts before pulling him in favor of Josh Johnson.
Leftwich completed 58 of 107 passes for 594 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions last season. He was later placed on injured reserve because of a sore right elbow.
There is no doubt Josh Freeman is Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback, Johnson is under contract through 2011 and Rudy Carpenter could be an adequate third string quarterback.
Odds are good Tampa Bay will say goodbye to Leftwich pretty soon.
The Bucs have $3.5 million reasons to do so.
