By now, many Buc players and their loved ones are enjoying the wide variety of Disney World attractions as the club celebrates Family Day at training camp.
Coach Jon Gruden experienced an early roller-coaster ride during morning practice. Tampa Bay players returned from a light day Friday and displayed fresh legs and plenty of effort, but the sharp passing game Gruden is hoping for failed to materialize due to sloppy execution.
“Obviously, we dropped a lot of balls,’’ Gruden said after practice as wives, girlfriends and children streamed onto the field. “We dropped too many passes, but it was a good, spirited practice. Our assignments were solid, but we just didn’t make enough plays on the offensive side of the ball. When plays are there to be made, you’ve got to make ‘em.’‘
WR Maurice Stovall was one of Saturday’s culprits, mishandling a pass over the middle with nowhere to hide.
“Nobody wants practice to go that way,’’ Stovall said. “You always want a crisp, productive practice. Anytime the ball is on the ground, whether it’s stripped, fumbled or dropped, you don’t want to put bad things on film.’‘
The Bucs continue to be cautious with veteran WR Joey Galloway, who came into camp nursing a slight groin strain. Galloway is expected to make his camp practice debut on Monday. Gruden said Jeff Garcia is “feeling a lot better’’ after straining his right calf Thursday, but he declined to predict when Tampa Bay’s starting QB would return to the field.
“Knowing Jeff, it won’t be long,’’ said Gruden. “Joey Galloway is working his butt off and he’s running fast. We’re very close to liftoff. I think we did the right thing with him. Our white tiger is about to come out of the cage.’‘
Rookie offensive lineman Jeremy Zuttah continues to generate praise from Gruden, who said the versatile third-round pick out of Rutgers is unflappable. “I can’t be more pleased with Jeremy Zuttah,’’ he said.
With Garcia sidelined, Brian Griese and Luke McCown are sharing an increased workload under center in a wide-open duel for the backup QB job.
“Those two are getting a great opportunity and they’re making the most of it,’’ said first-year QB coach Greg Olson. “It’s a really good competition and that will be a tough call. Luke’s very athletic and that’s something a lot of people don’t realize. Brian has a great feel for this offense.’‘

Kurt,... how the f do you know? every report I have read says that he looks every bit as good as Garcia or McCown and he looks better than Griese. In fact, he may play for the Bucs his year.

Surprising to hear Simms is looking sharp; it’s been years since I’ve heard that. Quite honestly, the practices I attended, he had trouble throwing to people out of the backfield. He has a very low trajectory which is probably the reason for all the batted balls. I will say that he is the biggest physical specimen at the position, but Ryan Leaf was big too. He’s the 4th best QB on this team right now.

I’m serious Jim; site one source (besides this particular article) that says Simms looks a bit as good as any of the others. I haven’t read the first one and for good reason, because he doesn’t look good. You don’t hear the coach talking about him nor anyone else because he blows monkey nuts! How the f’ I know is because I’ve gone to some of the practices and watched with my own eyes, so I guess the question is: how the f’ do you know? Simms looked terrible in the short game and continues to throw the ball low.
