Bucs Midday Report

LAKE BUENA VISTA - The injury bug took a big bite out of the Bucs on Thursday.

Though neither injury is believe to be serious, the day was marred by the loss of quarterback Jeff Garcia to a calf injury and under tackle Jovan Haye to a groin strain.

No one will be surprised if both players miss the next couple days of practice, but Bucs coach Jon Gruden said that just creates opportunities for other players.

One of the beneficiaries of Garcia’s injury will be Chris Simms. Simms has seen his reps diminish greatly since Garcia arrived in camp on Monday. With Garcia out for a day or so, Simms may get the chance to show he is indeed back from his long layoff.

Garcia, who went down while performing a noncontact throwing drill, joined Haye and a host of others on the injury list. WR Joey Galloway (groin), C Jeff Faine (back), FB B.J. Askew (back), S Sabby Piscitelli (knee) and WR Chad Lucas (leg) all missed Thursday’s morning workout.

Outside of the injuries the most interesting aspect of Thursday’s workout was the site of Galloway and RB Cadillac Williams running with parachutes. The drill is designed to help build strength and speed, and it’s a sign both players are making good progress in their battles back from injury.

I will be replacing Faine!

And if you think Garcia can’t throw the ball now, just wait until he has to throw over my big ears!

I apologize, it was the LA Express that Young played for. He played two season and was the only pro football player ever to throw for 300 and rush for 100 in a game. He also played tailback his second season as the RB’s were decimated by injury. He played two season for the dismal Bucs then was traded to San Fran. In his first game in which he played (which was his first season in San Fran) he threw four TD’s. In his four seasons as a backup he thew 23 TD’s to 6 INT’s. Get your facts straight instead of your tweedle-dee opinions. Mediocre talent doesn’t make it to the Hall boys.

Steve from Tampa,

You are absolutely correct !!

Posted by  Kurt,  on 08/01  at  12:33 PM

Steve...fyi...steve young was already a developed and a good qb who had proven himself in the USFL for the Houston Gamblers I believe. That league was no joke and is why the NFL squashed it. Warren Moon, Hershel Walker, Jim Kelly, Boomer Esiason, Dough Williams, etc all hailed from the defunked league. Your analysis is broken and misguided.

News flash: Tampa just traded Chris Simms to Dallas for and old forgotten pair of Emmitt Smith cleats and one half eaten pack of Bubble Yum chewing gum. The chewing gum was the deciding factor in the trade. From the Buc’s camp came the comment from Gruden,"We did the best we could and we feel we were fortunate to get that”. He had fire in his eyes - are you freakin kidding me - that was tears and he was afraid of getting laid out by his own OL. Oops - hold on Gruden just told the kid he needs to set up before he throws the ball. Hold on, hold on, Simms his heading to the sidelines balling his little eyes out. Wait - there’s no crying in Football! Hope the NFL camera didn’t catch that one - there goes the chewing gum!

fyi: steve young would have never developed into the qb he was without bill walsh and joe montana.if he would have stayed in tampa he would have been most likely mediocre at best. lynch is way past his prime. we released him when he couldnt pass a physical. same with rice, look wher hes at now.

Come on guys “Nick” is probably just a young kid that has very little football experience that grew up Cheering for Simms. We all know Simms really sucked.

Posted by  Joe Buc, Tampa on 07/31  at  10:14 PM

"Nick” must be Simms’ pen name.

Hi Nick.....You really need to quit smoking that Simms stuff!!  He can’t throw over the D line (batted balls) and when he does, it is a INT!!!

’site’--is a location--
an interesting “sight” is when you look at something of interest.

George,

I am totally comfortable with the secondary we have. I know that your all for the old farts but we have enough of them already.

George Hicks, if your post is satire, ignore mine...Are you insane? If you need a safety that runs up late and jumps on the pile and gets burned over the middle, sure, bring Lynch back. He has played poorly the last six or seven years and made the pro bowl in Denver because of what he accomplished in Tampa. I didn’t miss him a bit when he left. As for Sapp, I think he could give one more good year in the rght system (Tampa) and would be great to have around for the younger guys.

This is George Hicks again, I just learn that John Lynch is leaving Denver, Why not offer a nice amount to come back to our Beloved Bucs. Wouldn’t it be nice for Lynch To Retired as a Buc and the fans would really love Him back. Maybe Warren Sapp would come out of Retirement for a year to help the younger players. Lets Start A WE WANT JOHN LYNCH BACK. That would also solve a defensive back problem with Cox gone for the year.

Can ya’ll say Chris Simms!! He’s the one that has something to prove and has fire in his eyes. Garcia maybe left out in the cold after this, besides Garia has look real bad the last few days. Since leaving OTA’s Garcia has looked bad, I think Gruden has seen enough of Garcia. Time to bring in the new, Simms is going to blow them out of the water. A healthy Chrsi Simms is the best QB on this roster hands down!!!

George Hicks, I believe Simms is in final contract year.  That is something the the Bucs have to consider should they decide to keep Simms as backup.  I get the sense that the Bucs will likely keep Simms until their preferred offer for a trade is met. Probably Simms will be in the roster this year more so as trade bait instead of a backup.

I see finally the the Bucs organization is finally letting Simms air the ball out. If the Farve sistutaion doesn’t materialize, Then I think that Simms should really get a chance to be the b/up and Griese should be 3 qb or McGown with Johnson on the Practice team for a year. I also think that the coach should really looked into how well Simms preformed over the Summer. Tampa Bay has been burned over the years. Example look at the Steve Young trade to the 49er’s. Tampa bite the trade. SF came out like the winner. Don’t give Simms away. GM Allen stand by your demands. If They don’t give you what Tampa wants. Then Keep Simms, and let him back into the Bucs system.

Roy, do have any update or opinion on the rookie QB (Johnson?).  I’m curious how he looks so far.

Zuttah and Buenning have been replacing Faine.

Who is replacing Faine, for the most part, at center?
