Bucs Report
Bucs Let Go of Gradkowski

Video: Cummings On Bucs’ Moves

TAMPA - The Bucs began to alleviate their logjam at quarterback Friday. In doing so they created a logjam at tight end.

On the same day in which they welcomed back tight end Jerramy Stevens, the Bucs let go of quarterback Bruce Gradkowski. It’s hard to tell which move was more surprising.

The Bucs have said for weeks that they planned to take only five quarterbacks to training camp this year, so a move (or two) at that spot was sure to come. Many, though, figured Chris Simms would be the first to go. This, however, is a clear sign that the Bucs still believe Simms has value - either to them or to someone else.

As for signing Stevens, who has been in and out of off-field trouble his entire career, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised at all. The Bucs liked him enough to sign him just days after he was arrested on drunken driving charges last spring. Stevens wound up missing time with the Bucs because of that arrest last season but Bucs coach Jon Gruden has always been enamored with his talent. Maybe we really didn’t know how much until now.

Jeremy Stevens was a bust at the University of Washington, the Seattle Seahawks and now with the Bucs--and he’ll always be a bust. Off field problems contribute to his on field failures! They should have never resigned him. Gruden...his talents are drinking--not catching the ball! I’m still a Bucs fan though-thru and thru. Living in Tampa and attending the University of Tampa in the 70’s-I always root for the Bucs-just not Jeremy! Go Bucs!!

Todd, that is just retarded.  Why in the world would Brett Favre come out of retirement to go to a team that is worse off than the team he retired from?  The Packers were close to the Super Bowl last year and return everyone.  Why not try to lure Dan Marino out of retirement.  Please, everyone, stop with these silly comments everytime someone gets cut or retires.

BG was a wholesome QB, he just wasn’t a sound one, but that bum Stevens...., when will the coach learn?? His famous reputation as a judge of talent is a joke.

Speaking of Brett Favre, We should try and approach him just before preseason starts and see if he is really retired.
This would be a perfect place for him to play for even one season. He lives just down the road and around the corner. He may be old and farting dust but the man can still play at a high level. Between him and Garcia, Josh Johnson and McCown could learn alot from them. That would be perfect. I really think Favre still wants to play exspecially when training camp approaches.

Some team will pick him up. Even if he would be third string. Green Bay could use some more QBs. Possibly Atlanta could use another back up. Somebody will pick him up. Good luck to who ever does. He could turn out to be a good QB, He’ll never be a Steve Young or Brett Favre or anyone like that but he’ll back somebody up.

depth at QB is a VERY important issue for NFL teams.  It’s so important, in fact, that some franchise may even give Grado a contract to be the #3 guy.  At the least, Grado has started some games and, as we all know, experience is a prized commodity for a backup QB.

That said, depth alone isn’t enough.  Even experience isn’t enough.  What teams, this one included, look for in a backup QB is “talent” and/or “potential” on top of experience.  That, unfortunately, is what Grado lacks.  In the end, there are simply better choices to serve as backups in this league.  That likely keeps Grado unemployed.

After 2 years of too too too many injuries I think we’ve learned to have depth at key positions. All quarterbacks will get injured at some point. Knock on wood Peyton. Gradkowski had heart, but was too small & just wasn’t the guy. Griese ??? I’m still puzzeled by this after the way he played in Chicago. The Josh Johnson project remains to be seen, but I’m hopeful. I hope he gets to play in the pre-season and maybe we’ll get to see what the Bucs saw. I wish the NFL would let teams have 90 players & not make cuts until preseason is over. At least one of these tight ends may get hurt. What are you gonna do?

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 06/02  at  12:37 PM

Well said Shawn, as always you are on the money.  Personally, I don’t see a market for Grads out there and would be very surprised if any team took a chance on signing him.

Posted by  Shawn Golan, Los Angeles, CA on 06/02  at  12:24 PM

Surprise, surprise!  So, Grado finally got cut...i’m fairly sure everyone saw that coming.  What I can’t figure out is why there is an actual discussion about this.  Look, I appreciate the kid’s toughness - he got tossed to the wolves in 2006.  That said, he is NOT an NFL-caliber QB.  Grads is a scrapper, but he lacks most of the tools necessary to succeed at this level.  He can’t throw the deep ball, can’t feel pressure, holds the ball too long, and has a tendency to miss wide open targets beyond 15 yards.  To me, that spells CFL!!!

By the way...if someone wants a comparison between Grado and another QB, how about Quincy Carter?

Posted by  Mitch R, NYC on 06/01  at  08:30 PM

Dave from Pitt, stop protecting your boy, he is an average QB at best who can’t throw the long ball and made really dumb mistakes.  I’ll admit, I was on the BG bandwagon for a few weeks when he took over, but quickly saw his flaws and those flaws never got any better.  To say that Tom Brady would have the same success as BG or CS is absolutely ridiculous.  BG had a similar script (as Brady), but a much different ending.  Remember that 2001 Patriots team?  Bledsoe was the QB and they lost the first 2 games and then Brady came in and led them to the title.  No such luck with BG, BG isn’t even in the same league as Brady (and I hate Brady).

Posted by  Dave Riedel, Pittsburgh on 06/01  at  07:03 PM

BG has not seen the last of the NFL, this guy was on the run from the moment he was sent in to try to hold together a football team that sent CS to the operating room to have his spleen removed. Tom Brady would have had the same success with the protection granted BG & CS.

Take a look at the real problem, its not the quarterbacks.

Kieth, you have the audacity to compare Bruce Gradkowski to Steve Young?  Are you an idiot?  Gradkowski will not be missed and will NEVER start in the NFL again.  Losing Gradkowski is more like losing Shaun King.  Big deal.

well i still think we need trim down our QBs i’m willing to part ways with mc.cown. but i still think simms is decent not good as his old man but decent. but yeah we really need to get rid of someone on TE i don’t think i wanna keep john gilmore the dude sucked on the bears. we already got troupe, stevens, and smith. if we tried to get shockey here i say cut ties will troupe.

Bill Hernick,

You are just a grade A dumb a$$. Everything you just said is total stupidity. Go root for Atlanta or something, they are going to need some more fan base there. Johnson hasn’t even played the first down in the NFL so how can you judge him? Like I said you’re a Dumb A$$.

Posted by  Bill Hernick, Daytona Beach on 06/01  at  10:56 AM

Roy are you serious.  Johnson was a huge mistake draft.  McCown was horrible last year.  If not for a bad call by Sean Payton he would have been 0-3 as a starter.  I am not saying Bruce should have stayed or gone but he is head and shoulders above McCown and Johnson.  If you say Gruden has matured as a coach, then why does he have 5 QB’s, no receivers and an old running back.

Posted by  todd, PSJ, FL. on 06/01  at  10:02 AM

Mark,

Griese never failed for us,unfortunitly he was injured last time he was here. You don’t remember that 5-0 start before he got hurt? Griese knows Gruden’s playbook. And if I remember right Griese and Galloway worked well together.

Posted by  Mark, Orlando on 06/01  at  12:45 AM

I liked BG but somebody had to go. I only hope next is Brian Greise. I cannot believe they brought him back, yet alone traded a draft pick for that stiff. How many teams does Greise have to fail with? He doesn’t have the skills and is not a leader.

Posted by  Greg, Bradenton on 05/31  at  02:18 PM

Cutting Bruce G. was a long time coming. I hope Gruden gives Simms a shot this preseason. Try him in shot-gun offense and be patient. I think he will be the back-up to Garcia if given the shot. Griese can’t make the throws, weak arm. McKown may also surprise with another year of experience. Now let’s see how Gruden run’s this summer’s camp. The starting running back will be Warrick Dunn if Graham continues to stay away. It will be RB by committee this year with opponent dictating which back plays most for which games. In Red Zone it will be Graham and Dunn. Both smell the end-zone.

we still overload on da same pos. why do we do that so much i hope we give j.johnson a fair shot unlike grad. t.romo didn’t do it overnight from div. 2 school so wit saying that i hope jj we need young playmakers that da team can build around. i like what we are doing on def. but da off. we need help trading for jason taylor would not make sense def. is not da problem we good from that stand point.

Good move all around.Bruce never really had it for this team.Luke looked pretty good in the little time he got to play.Stevens if stays out of trouble is probably the best hands in the red zoze out of all the TE’s.We will win 10 games this year.Go Bucs!!!

lets slow down on comparing Stevens to Harrison and Rhodes...did you read the expose done on Stevens? Find it here: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/victoryandruins/ we aren’t talking about DUI’s Stevens is a major dirtbag, read the article, if you have daughter, a mother, a grandmother a sister it will bother you this guy is on our team

Posted by  Bert Boweden, Jax Fla on 05/31  at  07:57 AM

I think it was a bad move.  You have alot of old QB’s, one who I thought played horribly last year (McCown) and a rookie who on all reports can’t throw 10 yards.  I thought Bruce handled his instant fame in a very mature professional manner two years ago.  Bravo to Bruce Allen for letting him go.  If I were a betting man, I bet Gruden ran and hid and didn’t even have the nerve to talk to the kid.  Typical.

Posted by  Greg, Tampa on 05/31  at  07:47 AM

Ha, anybody that thinks Bennett will be this teams savior is delusional the guy hasn’t done anything in this league since his rookie season seriously the guy couldn’t even get on the field for the Vikings and that was long before they had Taylor and Peterson.  Oh and Bill, that’s great that you go to the games but next time perhaps you should put your beer down and watch some of the football that is being played on the field!

Posted by  todd, PSJ, FL. on 05/31  at  07:17 AM

Greg,

Your starting to sound like Billy Hill. Why don’t you study what Patrick said. And me not knowing the team, you are delusional. I,ve seen almost every game since 98’.  I like Pittman believe me,but like what Patrick said I believe Bennett is going to step up this year since he knows the system better. Also Darby might turn out to be something also. We even picked up a couple of undrafted free agents that COULD work out well. So yes we have depth at RB/FB. Are you forgetting about our other FB we have on the team?

Posted by  Michael Harris, Oldsmar, FL on 05/31  at  05:03 AM

Probably a good move considering he’s never gonna be a starter in the league.  I’m still curious why they’re holding on too Simms.  Probably because there are no takers.  I’m ready for the season to begin.
