Video: Cummings On Bucs’ Moves
TAMPA - The Bucs began to alleviate their logjam at quarterback Friday. In doing so they created a logjam at tight end.
On the same day in which they welcomed back tight end Jerramy Stevens, the Bucs let go of quarterback Bruce Gradkowski. It’s hard to tell which move was more surprising.
The Bucs have said for weeks that they planned to take only five quarterbacks to training camp this year, so a move (or two) at that spot was sure to come. Many, though, figured Chris Simms would be the first to go. This, however, is a clear sign that the Bucs still believe Simms has value - either to them or to someone else.
As for signing Stevens, who has been in and out of off-field trouble his entire career, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised at all. The Bucs liked him enough to sign him just days after he was arrested on drunken driving charges last spring. Stevens wound up missing time with the Bucs because of that arrest last season but Bucs coach Jon Gruden has always been enamored with his talent. Maybe we really didn’t know how much until now.

It has been fun watching & reading the debate on our new QB, as mentioned thru out the debate some beleive he belongs others do not. Only time will tell, but 5 other teams did make a play for the young qb (team with the losing record wins the waiver). We are pleased this young gun will stay in the NFC & get his chance.
Good luck down south with the great qb debate & the 5,6, maybe 7 way battle for the starting job.
Maybe Josh will be the new “Pet Project” for the coach.

Skylar, Mitch is rigth bout Grad. I liked this kid coming out of college. He looked good at toledo. I watched him complete alot of passes over 20 yds. In the pros he didn’t do anything. If you cant complete a 20 yd pass you cant be an NFL QB. Rams might pick him up but he is not a Starter. I wish him the best of luck and I hope he proves us all wrong, but its not gonna happen.

Skylar, don’t get me wrong, I like(d) Grads. I think he has heart and a (somewhat) quick release, but he lacks the armstrength to stretch the field and makes too many poor decisions. I’m not going to blame the 2006 season on him, it wasn’t his fault and he was stuck behind a green O-Line. I think it was Grudens fault for not preparing the team and not having a veteran backup. That being said, I’m not so egotistical to admit I am wrong. But you need more than heart to lead a team in the NFL and I don’t think Grads has the arm or smarts to be an effective starter in this league and that’s what makes him a career backup or 3rd stringer.

I don’t disagree with what you say now Mitch. Unfortunately, you’re paraphrasing somebody else’s body of work. What you are stating now is not what you said earlier and that is the fact. I think he’s good enough to compete for a job in this league although I don’t think the Rams is the ideal fit. He would have been better suited for a team without really good QB’s on the roster, like KC, Miami, etc. Nonetheless, don’t take this stuff personally; it’s just a place to formulate and throw around ideas. I can admit when I’m wrong and so should you. Can we move on please?

Skylar, to sum it up, this is what I said:
“Grads will be lucky to be plucked up off the wire and even luckier to see anything past 3rd string”
So, how am I a liar or wrong? He was lucky enough to be picked up off the waiver wire, now let’s see him get past 3rd string.
Do you honestly think that BG is going to beat out Mark Bulger for the starting job? Do you honestly think that he’s a better QB than Trent Green? He’s going to be (at best) 3rd string on a horrible team next year and odds are that he wont see past the practice field. Do you disagree with that? No jedi mind tricks, no bitchslapping, just the facts.
Posted by Skylar, Charlotte, NC on 06/06 at 08:14 AM
All I stated was that you guys were naive to think he was relegated to the Arena league and that he was talented enough to fight for a starting job on an NFL roster where the QB position is weak. I also said he would be grabbed up quickly. Why do you keep putting words into my mouth that I never uttered? Oh, I know why, because you are wrong and instead of manning-up and moving on, you’re trying your little Jedi tricks which don’t work on me. You are backtracking now because you were saying he wasn’t even worthy of the NFL. You’re wrong, get over it and stop wasting the very prescious little grey matter you have left. I’m done b!tchslapp!ng you. Next topic.

Skylar, Derrick Brooks isn’t the player in question here, it’s Bruce Gradkowski. You’re the self-appointed king of player evaluation, please enlighten Patrick, Shawn and myself on Gradkowski’s strenghts and weaknesses. You claimed that he was oozing with talent, please tell us what his strengths are (aside from his pre-game puke fest in the locker room).
Posted by Skylar, Charlotte, NC on 06/06 at 08:06 AM
Wow - making it look like I am putting Bruce with Brooks; now that’s a stretch even I wouldn’t have come up with! I never said anything of the such, but what would you know right? Actually Patrick, you specifically stated earlier that Bruce was “no more than a CFL or AFL QB,” so I was just going by what you wrote in reality; not what you are making up now in your fantasy “I didn’t say that” land. Thanks for you comments anyhow Patrick. Maybe one day you will realize that people can just skim down the page to see that you are a liar on top of being wrong.

Skylar, before you go getting on your high horse and start thinking you are awesome, why don’t you wait till the end of the preseason and see where Grads ends up. He’ll be in a fight for 3rd string with Brock Berlin. If Grads is as talented as you claim he is, why would he go into a situation where he’s fighting for 3rd string? Like I said before, let him make the team and start some games before you go showing everyone how big your “brain” is.

im sorry skylar..but correct me if im wrong...but i said hes nothing more than a thirdstring qb..which he is...hes goin to sit on the bench just like he did here and be there 3rd or 4th string qb...hes not goin to start in the nfl...yes..he helps with depth at qb...but hes not good enough to be a starting qb...so my evaluation on bruce is correct...and tryin to even put bruce in the same sentence as brooks is just plain stupid…

Mitch, instead of me backing up my correct claim about Grad making a roster (without time even expiring,) why don’t you brake down Brooks’ game; that should be easy enough. Give me five pros and cons. I was right about Grad, so it is only fitting you should have to prove yourself in this cockfight. I fear that you’re getting into a battle of witts with insufficient ammo.
Posted by Skylar, Charlotte, NC on 06/05 at 11:23 PM
All I stepped onto a limb was to say he would be on another roster fast! You specifically stated that he would be “lucky” to be picked off the wire, yet he appears not to even have made the wire. You’re a numbnuts, plain and simple; get over yourself. It was obvious he would be on another roster fast and you had absolutely no clue about it at all. That’s all.

And another thing Skylar, please fill me in on Gradkowski’s talent. Yes, the kid has heart and made a couple of nice plays, but being that you are so keen on player evaluation, please do us a favor and break down his game and let me know 5 strengths and 5 weaknesses in Bruce’s game.
Posted by Mitch R, NYC on 06/05 at 09:43 PM
Yeah Skylar, cause the Rams have been SOOOOO good lately. Rams are probably worse off than the Bucs. Their O-Line stinks and Tori Holt is getting a bit long in the tooth. Yeah, it’s ideal for Grads, I’m sure he’ll be in the Pro Bowl at least 2 to 3 times over the next 5 years, NOT. Let him make that team and start before you call us out on player evaluations. Why don’t you become a Rams fan, if you love Gradkowski so much.
Posted by Skylar, Charlotte, NC on 06/05 at 06:29 PM
Looks like the Rams are going to sign him the second he comes off of waivers. Seems like there are others out there with a football brain. That wasn’t hard to figure out for anyone who knows anything about talent. Looks like Patrick, Mitch and Shawn need to practice up on their player evaluations. Nothing new.

Roy John Gruden’s maturity really showed up. He signed a guy who he knew failed a drug test. Time for a new article with the facts.
I saw the Josh Johnson video. He was someone the Bucs could have gotten as a free agent. You cannot dispute that one.

Good ridens. This kid stunk. He did’nt have enogh talent, point balnk. I see an assistant coaching job opening up at Boise State as we speak.
Is anyone really sheading a tear hear? We still need to get rid of one or two more.
I don’t think you can compare Johnson (Josh) and Gradkowski except they both played for smaller programs in college and were picked later in the draft.
I never understood this kid starting or even being third string. Now I do. Gruden admits he made a big mistake. He was too eger for a QB success story.
Posted by Skylar, on 06/04 at 10:12 AM
I have no devotion whatsoever to Gradkowski. However, I do know talent when I see it he has some. I see no-one addressed the QB situation on some of those teams I mentioned; probably because you know he is a better option than Kyle Boller or Tavaris Jackson. Only time will tell and I do appreciate your opinions, but I consistently get these kind of things right so I’m moving on. BTW - I guarantee he asked for his release and was not happy here.
Posted by patrick dotson, tampa,fl on 06/03 at 05:47 PM
bruce is goin to be nothing more than a afl or cfl qb...if this kid had any talent what so ever i would say different...but he lacks in descision making, arm strength and accuracy...skylar...if he was such a good qb why has he sat at #3 on our roster the whole time he has been here besides a short time in o6...hmmmm…
Posted by Mitch R, NYC on 06/03 at 08:50 AM
Skylar, you’re wrong. Grads will be lucky to be plucked up off the wire and even luckier to see anything past 3rd string. He’s just not that good.
Posted by Shawn Golan, Los Angeles, CA on 06/03 at 08:43 AM
Skylar, I’m sure Grado appreciates your undying devotion and support...but get real. At BEST, the kid is a backup. In REALITY, he’s a 3rd string guy or a CFL player. In this league, a QB must be able to throw the deep ball accurately - Grado can’t. In this league, a QB must be aware of the pass rush at all times - Grado isn’t.
The kid has toughness in spades, but that’s not enough to make him successful. Again, I really do respect what he did in 2006, but that by no means translates to me, or anyone else, wanting him to be a starter. Sorry...he just ain’t got it!
Posted by Skylar, on 06/03 at 06:58 AM
Has anyone looked at the competition at QB in the NFL lately? It’s dismal. Grad may be a starter for another franchise before year’s end. I’d say he is better than anyone on Atlanta, San Fran, Baltimore, possibly Buffalo and assuredly Miami. You are naive if you think this guy is relagated to the Arena league. He was caught in a logjam in Tampa and I believe he asked for his release because he’s been thrown under the bus here.
