Bucs Lament One That Got Away

NEW ORLEANS—The Bucs were tough on themselves after dropping a 24-20 decision to the Saints in the season opener at the Superdome.

MLB Barrett Ruud, whose crushing hit against QB Drew Brees led to Phillip Buchanon’s 26-yard TD off an interception return, said Tampa Bay’s defense needs to sharpen up its pursuit angles and tackle better in the wake of a 438-yard outburst by New Orleans.

CB Ronde Barber said he got his foot tangled up with WR Devery Henderson’s on an 84-yard TD catch late in the third quarter that marks the second-longest reception against the Bucs in franchise history.

WR Ike Hilliard, who caught six passes for 45 yards, including a 2-yard scoring catch that briefly put the Bucs ahead 20-17, lamented missed opportunities.

“We had a good game plan coming in, but I just feel we left a ton of points out there all during the game,’’ said Hilliard.

Tampa Bay converted only 2-of-12 on third down and punted eight times as Coach Jon Gruden fell to 2-5 in season openers with the Bucs.

“It’s my bad,’’ Gruden said. “It’s obviously bad coaching. We just didn’t make the plays. I didn’t call a very good game.’’

The Bucs will look to regroup in Sunday’s home opener against the Falcons, who surprised Detroit in Week 1 behind a solid effort by rookie QB Matt Ryan.

“Today was a division game and it’s important,’’ said DT Chris Hovan. “I won’t lie. But I also know we’ll take care of what we did wrong and this team will bounce back.’’

I know it was only preseason,But the Bucs looked good against the Patriots running Graham, Dunn and Michael Bennet who for some reason is not is involved so far in the season. If you’re going to have three good running backs USE THEM ! What better way to tire a defence than having a FRESH running back all the time. He’s to good to be sitting on the BENCh !!!!!

Garcia needs to be thrown under the bus after all his complaints. Trade Garcia to the Pats & mess up Simms’ life again. Maybe we can get an old tape or film or something for him. It will save money & open up a roster spot. Garcia doesn’t want us & we don’t need him. He sucks, Pats suck, Belichick sucks. Its a match made in Heaven. What’s with the Refs? Now they’re screwing up the Packers. I’m not a fan of the Pack, but they called ineligible man 3 yds past the line of scrimmage. I thought it was 5 yds. negated a touch down. All refs suck. Trade them to the Pats. Then they can all suck together.

Josh Johnson could have done better then Garcia !! Sorry guys but thats a fact ! If we can’t even beat the sorry a$$ Saints I wonldn’t care if we just throw the season away and lose the rest of the games and pick up the best QB coming out of college in the next draft and top reciever with our 2nd pick. Get a deal done to get an extra 1st rounder and make it happen. Last game was a joke. Everything just sucked..Us..the Refs..and everything in between.

I HOPE GRIESE STARTS NEXT GAME !! GARCIA NEEDS TO SIT THE BENCH AND HOLD A CLIPBOARD !!

Posted by  Dave, Tampa, FL on 09/08  at  02:55 PM

You people are pathetic.  It is ONE GAME!!!!  I guarentee that is the most points and yards given up (at least until they play Dallas) but most likely all season.  This defense is too good.
As far as the offense, they had Galloway, Garcia, Hilliard, Askew, Dunn and Graham playing all day:  That is 6 guys who have hardly played at all the entire offseason.  They will be much improved.
The good news was the line did a MUCH better job of blocking the pass rush in the second half.
It’s a long season, if you want to throw everyone under the bus already go root for a different team.

Hey Nick from Oviedo - “they let Simms go and got nothing”.  Simms has been on the street for over a week and had 1 workout and the Ravens wanted Harrington and Bouman over him.  What’s that tell you.  No one would give the Bucs ANYTHING for Simms.  DEAL WITH IT. Fans are in denial.  Yeah, Simms is the next Brett Favre, the NFL just doesn’t get it is that it?!  Idiots.

and Steve who wants Lynch back - you’re an idiot too.

Posted by  Ron, Orlando on 09/08  at  09:59 AM

Steve, the safties played pretty well.  Tanard Jackson was all over the field. It was the corners that lost this game Ronde tripped, Talib mistimed his jump).
I really feel that if Brooks is going to be out, Cato needs to slide over to weakside and Quincy Black needs to play strongside.  Unlike McCoy, if Black reads things too slow at least he’s got the speed to recover.

there is another vetran leader that possibly would have saved the game? (john lynch)was are best safety… I wish we had him back.

Trade Garcia to the Patriots, before it’s too late. Maybe we can get a 7’th rounder or one of Bill’s hoodies. Garcia was so smug in his press talk. “We can do better. I can do better”. Sorry Jeff, but I think for you, that’s as good as it gets. Chucky, run him and his bad attitude off. Mr “I don’t think I can lay it on the line for a team that doesn’t respect me”. McCown with his scrambling would have won that game. Griese with his pocket presence would have won that game. Neither Jeff’s head or his heart was in it. I know where his head is. Where was the scramble? No, just throw it at the ground or the back’s feet.

you guys should be ashamed of yourself.

good job bucs, that game was stolen from you.

a td was taken away from the bucs and in the Bush TD, gaine adams was held.

all i can do is watch favre and think of what could have been.... Bring in the Greise

Posted by  Nick, Oviedo on 09/08  at  06:37 AM

We could have had Farve, if Allen & Gruden had half a brain.  They let go of simms and got nothing and we’re stuck with rusty old Jeff” I’m Not Gay” Garcia.

Posted by  Mike Micco, East coast on 09/08  at  05:08 AM

Favre looked good in Jets debut, Garcia sucked. Bucs should have worked harder to get Brett in a pewter uni, we are in for a mediocre season at best.
Should have a great position in next years draft:(

For once, I agree with Coach Gruden (see his comment about being his fault). Seven years: what an offensive genius. I mean it. He is offensive.

Guys this was one game, don’t throw in towel.  Garcia played one series all preseaon and the white tiger did not even get out of his cage.  The D looked great at times against a very good offense.  If Brooks is gone we may need to worry but really guys it’s one week.  Run the ball more, pass less till Garcia and Galloway get it going, then we will open it up.  We hung in there all game so don’t worry yet.  If next week Garcia looks like that again I say it’s time for Griese, and if we are still losing bring McCown and see if he is the future of the team or not.

Hey Butkus, those weren’t women.

Posted by  gmimay, Sumter, SC on 09/07  at  09:20 PM

Garcia seemed to move out of the pocket alot sooner that he had to today, yes there was pressure but the pocket hadn’t totally collapsed on alot of those plays. In fact he ran into pressure a few times. We need to throw more intermidiate balls. We started to midway in the 3rd quarter and things started opening up. Garcia definetly looked rusty today.

we need a QB that can run

Posted by  Buc fan in VA., VA. on 09/07  at  08:02 PM

This was a tough game to watch, I agree with the comment that our Offense put alot of pressure on our Defense and they were tired at the end. You know it’s tough to say but Joey Galloway is starting to look his age. It’s sad to say about our WR’s but when Ike H.#19 is your best receiver and go to guy on the day, we are gooing to be hurting this season, Ike is a good WR to have but should be the go to guy every sunday. I know this is one game but seems like the same old thing yr after yr. Put m. Bennet on the field to make some plays for us. Boy did D. Jackson#10 from Philly looked good today. I guess it’s kind of tough on WR if you don’t have someone who can get them the ball.

Hey BigNumbNut,

Elton John was married to a woman.

Michael Jackson was married to a woman.

Wake up and smell the KY jelly

Yeah Gaines played. He was the one taken down with the WWF move just before the Bush touchdown. Dude was grabbed, flipped, and trounced on for a take down. Amazing a ref couldn’t see when the announcers...and the world could. Call that penalty, get 1st and twenty, and Bush never sees that td. Anyway, Bucs played good for starters getting first action. Protected too much in preseason again. But don’t cliff dive yet. We loose our opener more than win them, and the year we one the Super Bowl we lost a close one to the Saints. Overall, decent game. Could have been worse. That’s for the best wishes from the Louisiana poster.

Bucs yall going to have to do the tighten up real fast

Hey Butkus, #7 does suck & if he is what you say, he has the hottest wife on the planet. Google Carmella DeCesare and you will see the light. Jeff, you suck at QB.
