Bucs just get no respect. . . no respect

0501Bucsminicamp

Like Rodney Dangerfield, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can’t get no respect.

Oh, yes, these are our Bucs in the NFC Central, after Carolina, and New Orleans with that hotshot gunslinger Drew Brees, and Atlanta, complete with a young gunslinger of their own, Matt Ryan.

And so begins the off-season look ahead litany.

Just no respect for these Bucs. Almost never have the Buckos received any, not before the great season of the late Coach John McKay when the Bucs made it to the NFC title game in Tampa, and, not since former Coach Jon Gruden won the Super Bowl a few years ago.

Well, we got another verse just like the others being sung by the football magazines now making the news stands. The hiring of a new head coach, Raheem Morris, and new general manager Mark Dominik is a mention, to succeed Coach Gruden and Bruce Allen gets mentioned, but not with any suggestion, generally, it will matter much.

The magazines, the writers, the analysts, the broadcasters all note the Bucs had more money available below their salary cap than any other club and did not cause a rush to sign big stars available, if there were any as judged by the Bucs.

The Bucs did re-sign their best—if quarterback Jeff Garcia was not considered among their best—and the owning Malcolm Glazers believe they have a team that can surprise plenty. They will need to do that because there are plenty, again, who do not feel this Bucko team can be that much of a factor in the NFC Central, or the NFL overall. They have a tough, tough schedule, with a start that includes Dallas, Buffalo there, the New York Giants, at Washington, at Philadelphia, Carolina here and New England at London.

Those forecasting generally settle on the fact that the Bucs do not have game-breakers, or, not enough. All remember the emergence of wide receiver Antonio Bryant (89), the reliability of running back Earnest Graham, and how nice it would have been to have Derrick Brooks back to world-class line back. Well, Brooks is gone, as is Warrick Dunn, but Graham is back and the Bucs did sign a running back named Derrick Ward who may be a fine fit. They also got a name tight end, Kellen Winslow, who may be his daddy’s star son. The Bucs also have a place kicker named Matt Bryant who will win some for this team, as he did last year. The Bucs still have Cadillac Williams, touted Auburn hero who has been haunted by injuries. He’s too good not to play the game more. He could make a difference, a positive one, or, he can continue to disappoint. Buc fans danced in the streets when he was signed, but not much lately.

But, the lament around the NFL is that the Bucs will still be the Bucs and that won’t be good enough. They will need all the help they can get from their coaching staff, the owning Glazer family that has done so well with the Manchester United soccer team and in the financial world. They will need for prospective stars to emerge, like Barrett Ruud at linebacker who may well be of all-universe quality, and for studniks of achievement to continue to lead, like corner Ronde Barber, safety Jermaine Phillips, like defensive end Gaines Adams, like center Jeff Faine, like offensive guard Davin Joseph.

Morris and his assistants have been hard at it. We see them with a challenge. They should see themselves with a great opportunity. Even the NFL, even the mighty Bucs are not immune from the economic downturn. The Bucs this time have to win to fill Raymond James.

And, through this, none are more important to all of this than the quarterback hopefuls. We knew Jeff Garcia was on borrowed time, though he may well go West and be heroic with Oakland. We also knew that it wasn’t an irreplaceable circumstance. Coach Morris and associates will continue to develop those who vie for the vital quarterbacking position. The candidates are worthy enough. They are the six-year veteran with the great football name of Luke McCown, , young Josh Johnson, big, big (6-5) Byron Leftwich, big, big, bigger Josh Freeman, a new kid from Kansas State, and Brian Griese, the son of Bob who has football genes to his toes, and a horde of natural supporters.

OK, that’s about it for mid-summer. You—we—still have time to call Coach Morris at One Buc and offer your ideas, right after you buy your tickets for the opening game against those Dallas Cowboys at Raymond James Stadium September 13.
