The Bucs quarterback of the future remains someone who isn’t here yet. They may address that today when the draft resumes, but given that they have only a handful of picks in this draft I guess they can’t address everything.
Still, you wonder if the gamble to pick up a couple of late picks for trading back in the second round was worth it after top QBs Brian Brohm and Chad Henne were taken just ahead of them. They wound up with Appalachian State receiver Dexter Jackson, who has the kind of big-game speed the Bucs desperately need at wideout. He is also a work in progress, but you like the upside. He wound up on the cover of Sports Illustrated after leading App State to the upset of Michigan last year.
We talked about the risk associated with the Bucs first pick – cornerback Aqib Talib of Kansas – in a previous post. I still can’t get too upset about them taking a corner at pick 20 in the first round though, and Talib has all the physical tools to succeed.
Back on Jackson for a second, he isn’t very big – just 5-9 – but he has 4.3 speed. There are a lot of early comparisons to Carolina’s Steve Smith, who has tormented the Bucs at times.
We said they needed a playmaker and Jackson surely seems to be that.
Give the Bucs a “B” for the first day and pray that a quarterback is there when they pick today. Jeff Garcia isn’t getting any younger.
That grade will plummet though if the Bucs fail to secure a quarterback on the second day. They might still focus on Hawaii’s Colt Brennan, USC’s John David Booty, or Kentucky’s Andre Woodson. They’re all still available.

Try a few names here...Schmidt, fb, West Va, Woodson, qb, Kentuk; Bryant, DT, Texas A&M, should I go on? Sorry Bucs, you have me joining some cynics now.

OK...I have been supportive of the Bucs this offseason, even when we took 4th round projected Dexter Jackson. But now I am beginning to think the Bucs are trying to outsmart themselves. Our scout team is either the smartest or dumbest in the NFL. Forget the reach for Jackson. We took the best two guards in the draft the last two years, now we pick a guy with 3. I tried to find info on our pick..."In addition, he is a developmental prospect at guard because he doesn’t have ideal weight or lower body strength for the position. As a result, Zuttah projects as a seventh round pick.” (Espn.com). Maybe we were afraid he wouldn’t be there when we used our second 5th round pick.

McCown stinks. Draft Colt in 3rd or 4th.

I don’t think John-David Booty will be there when we pick next. The rest of the QB’s on the table are not our future QB. We are going to have to wait till the next draft 09’ 1st round
to accomplish that. From what I hear we have alot of picks next year in the draft. We need to spend the rest of our picks on whats going to make us stronger now “FB,DT,WR,OT/G”. Besides the QB possition “Thats next Year.”
We can live with Garcia and McCown,Greise for another year. We don’t need to take a QB off the board unless John-David Booty falls in our lap.

Joe,
Please explain to me why luke McCown is not a viable QB of the future?
McCown put up very nice numbers [almost 70% completion] and looked like a playmaker. He maid 2 or 3 bad plays in his starts. Imagine that a young QB who hadnt played in almost 2 years playing in a high pressure game made a mistake. He still threw the game winning TD vs NO and nobody seems to remember that.
I dont understand why everyone discounts the guy. He’s mobile and accurate everything you look for in a QB.
