TAMPA – If you’re among the Bucs followers who believe Tampa Bay has at least one too many running backs, the San Diego Chargers just may have a deal for you.
According to an ESPN report late Tuesday, the Chargers are looking for help at running back and are willing to trade cornerback Antonio Cromartie to get it.
The report doesn’t list the Bucs among the teams that have a wealth of running backs, but everyone who follows the Bucs closely knows they do.
With Cadillac Williams, Derrick Ward, Earnest Graham, Clifton Smith and Kareem Huggins on the roster the Bucs could afford to give up a front-line back, especially if it means getting a front-line corner in return.
Cornerback is a definite area of need for the Bucs. They have two solid starters in Ronde Barber and Aqib Talib, but Barber may only have another year or two left and the group thins out dramatically after that.
Imagine having Talib and Cromartie, 25, on the outside and Barber in the slot on passing downs? If the reports out of San Diego are true, it could happen, and that might be good for the Bucs.
Cromartie had a breakout year in 2007 with 10 interceptions and while he was said to have regressed a bit in 2008 it was largely because he was suffering from a hip injury.
Cromartie finished 2009 with three interceptions, but is still considered to be one of the best playmaking corners in the game. One scouting report refers to him as the Ed Reed of corners.

If the deal dosen’t cost us any early round draft picks I say take it. I agree Talib and Cromartie would look good as the starters and maybe with not playing every down you get more out of Barber . Both on the field and in longevity.
