In his preseason NFL preview, Sports Illustrated writer Peter King predicted Tampa Bay would finish with a 2-14 record.
“Boy, was I wrong about them,” King wrote in his weekly online “Monday Morning Quarterback” column after the Bucs’ 2-0 start.
King put the Bucs at No. 15 in his weekly rankings and lauded the Bucs’ Raheem Morris as his “Coach of the Week.”
“Of all the surprises in the NFL after two weeks, nothing is weirder to me than the Bucs being 2-0,” King wrote.
The early season change of heart was noteworthy after Morris called out the veteran reporter – and other media prognosticators – after Sunday’s 20-7 victory at Carolina.
“Tell Peter King we already got our two wins,” Morris said.
King got the message. Regarding the Bucs’ second-year coach, King wrote: “From the start of the offseason program, Morris told his team there wasn’t any cavalry coming over the hill – this was the team they were going with. So far it hasn’t been a team for 2012 and beyond. It’s been a team ready to play and win now.”
King, who also does commentary for NBC Sports’ “Football Night in America,” has also been impressed with Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman and linebacker Quincy Black.
“Quincy Black might not ever be Derrick Brooks, but the Bucs linebacker makes a couple of plays a game that remind me of him,” King wrote.
