Bucs Fan Displeased With Coverage

I received this interesting e-mail from a Bucs fan and wanted to know if there are other fans out there who share his sentiments?

In the information age of fantasy football and “splash plays” and highlight reels and ESPN’s over-sensationalizing fancy TD’s and dunks and eschewing fundamental sound play, I’m afraid that what the Bucs have put together on defense for the past 12 seasons could be the last of its kind.

It’s funny that if A.P. the Wunderkind had run roughshod over the Bucs, the game would have led SportsCenter. The Bucs shut him down and the game didn’t even make it onto the 90 minutes Sunday night SportCenter. Forget making the Blitz segment or even an Express highlight, the game DIDN’T EVEN MENTIONED. No score. Nothing. Shame. Didn’t mention it the next day on First Take. Barely made the NFL primetime segement the next day and didn’t even get mentioned on NFL countdown last night. The game hardly got mentioned on the NFL Network Game Day Final show Sunday night. You almost had to wonder if the game was even played.

The lack of respect (and really just plain lack of interest) in what the Bucs have done this year is remarkable. Of course, I’m biased (lifelong Bucs fan), but it’s amazing how little anyone talks about the Bucs. Sadly, I think it’s in large part a reflection of the sillyness that is ESPN’s hype machine and glorification of “highlights”, the fantasy-crazed audience they cater to, and also in part due to the dying appreciation for dominant defense. Outside of the Bay Area, defense doesn’t sell anymore. And in a few years, why would players buy into it either if all you see on TV are offensive highlights? When Ronde and Brooks are gone, what then?

It’s sad, because when they are good, they are really fun to watch (caveat lector - Buc fan writing). And they’ve been soooo good, for so long that maybe it’s just not interesting to the rest of the nation. I mean many, and I do mean MANY of the mindless talking heads on TV/radio think Arizona could be the second best team behind the Giants. I don’t even know where to begin with that logic. They are just a product of the highlight reel age that we live in. Bucs are in 5th in NFL on defense and 9th in offense and they might as well be the Montreal Alouettes. The Bengals’ utter and complete ineptitude as a franchise get more pub and TV time than the Bucs.

But dang it all, I hope we win a championship in our home stadium on February 1 next year and then we can authoritatively tell every media outlet where to shove their highlight reels. Sadly, however, it could also mark the end of real defensive dominance, the kind that we have grown to know and love for lo these dozen years.

Maybe we’ll get a 30 minute special on NFLNetwork4 in 20 years at 3am in the morning when really no one will care, but I’ll have my TiVo set nonetheless. I’ll miss my Bucs the way the game was meant to be played.

Oh,,, forgot to meantion There have only been three Bucs games shown on California T.V. in three years. They always over ride any national game coverage due to all the Cali teams, Denver or Cowboys.

Rejoice Tampa fans.

YOU THINK YOU GET NO COVERAGE,,,,

I have live in California for the last 3 1/2 years and I dont think they have every heard of Florida Football. I have traveled across the country for over 25years and the tampa tribune and T.V. coverage of sports in the bay area is the best in the country, ( by far). Coverage anywhere from little league baseball, to womens softball.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Forget about the national media, if the bucs do their Jobs on the field eventually the coverage will stop at Oone Buc Place.....

Jonesing for more bucs coverage,,, any coverage,,,, thanks TBO.com & Bucs report.

Can you imagine what I go thru..I live in Chicago and Not a lot of Buc fans here. I have to hear the Bear fans week in and week out. I totally agree with you’ll about the coverage. I waited ALL NIGHT to see some highlights on the Bucs/Minn game. And yes, if AP would have ran for 200 yards on us, it would have been all kind of coverage. As stated, the Bucs need to just keep winning and the media will have no other choice but to give us coverage.

1) Bucs get dissed on nat’l TV often and have for the past 10 years. No real news here. Defense doesn’t make a better highlight than a splashy TD grab.
2) Lack of Bucs’ nat’l TV coverage has gotten worse in fantasy football era. Not long ago, Bucs would still get some love for playing defense. ESPN has shifted coverage to more of a FF focus to cater to a new audience. Nat’l coverage of the Bucs is virtually non-existent now.
3) I think lack of coverage could lead to a lack of defensive focus on the field. When core group of Bucs is gone, will next gen player care about playing BucBall with no highlights?

We could be witnessing last of its time in this generational cycle of football. Enjoy it while it lasts. I know I will.

I am a BUCS fan (and Tampa native) living in Atlanta, and I must agree, the media coverage is abysmal. Seldom, if ever, are there highlights of BUC action. NEVER any game breaks. Some of it, of course is the coach/team’s fault. I love to see the BUCS defense flying to the ball, recovering fumbles, making interceptions, etc., but that offense is like watching cheese grow mold. This is the age of entertainment and flashy stars. Our coach doesn’t like flash and our offense is hardly entertaining. Score 35-40 points on somebody consistently, and we’ll be all over SportsCenter!!

Aside from getting attention only when the Bucs play the “Golden” teams (Steelers, Colts, Giants, Cowboys, etc), Tampa will probably get the most media coverage from this weeks game against Detroit. Detroit hasn’t won a game and has many x-members of the Tampa organization. Apparently this is supposed to make them a threat. Whatever...I will be at this game on the Tampa side - not to see an exciting game, but to hopefully get my Garcia probowl jersey signed. I can only hope!!

it was a boring game...only td by askew. that wont make the reels. the game vs kc made for good tv. just keep winning.

I don’t consider allowing him 85 yards a shut down. The Bucs won the game. Let’s leave it at that.  A shut down would be 30 yards or so. He’s an amazing back, to get that kind of yardage against a Monte Kiffin D, that usually does shut down the great backs.

LOL at all the stories on the Cowboys. When is the last time they won a playoff game anyway?
Who care that they will lose in the first round of the playoffs (if they even get in) and that we’ll have to watch highlights all offseason of TO crying about the criticism his slobbering dim-whit ted owner is getting for being a total failure since Jimmy Johnson left town. Maybe he’ll get caught insider trading next wink You know he couldn’t make money honestly with the decision making he’s shown.
Hmmm maybe they are more interesting then watching a strong defensive team and a coach saddled with poor talent at QB finding ways to win…
Just flip the channel everytime they do another worthless story on the NFC East (minus the G-men).

I just saw the craziest S$%T on SI.com it has doing the predictions for the playoffs and it didn’t even have the BUCS making the playoffs. This is what will really blow your mind it had New Orleans winning the division. It said that Tampa would beat Oakland and Carolina but lose to Detriot, Atlanta, San Diego, and New Orleans. Are you f-ing kidding me. The media outside of Tampa is giving this team no chance in hell. You put that Giants team up agains this D-Fence and it see ya later Giants. Yeah ARIZONA can put up the points but there defense sucks and they play in the crappy west. They also said that the cowboys would be the other Wild Card with Philly and not Carolina. Please let Caddy come back and be worth a dam.

Oh ya, on the media. I’m sick of all the USC talk & Pete Carroll. Every year, it’s the SOS. USC #1. Fraud, I say. The Gators are solid. The SEC rocks too. All those idiots talk about is the Big Ten & Pac Ten. Well they suck. Sorry I had to say it. Lastly, Paterno & Bowden both need to hang it up. Thank You.

I agree with you. This is nothing new. The media hates us. It’s worse than being a Republican. If your a Buc Fan & a Republican, OMG, your done. No really, since I’ve been up here for the the last month, the Bills have lost 4 in a row, LOL. The cocktail maidens blame us, but they are quickly becoming Buc Fans. They had the game on half the TV’s Sunday, even though the Bills were on MNF. They were upset when I forgot to tell them we had a Bye Week. LSS, they are being convertd to Buc Fans because the Bucs are Entertaining, Exciting, Thrilling, Relentless & also Chuc’s Bucs. No other coach is like that Madman. All I can say to the Media is, “They’re Loss”. Derrick Brooks made the play of the game. Go Bucs!!!

Are you just now noticing the lack of coverage on the Bucs? Please!!!! It has been going on since we came into the league. Watch any pregame show on Sundays or through the week and you see the same teams getting highlighted week end and week out.

Posted by  darrick, miami,fl on 11/18  at  08:08 PM

i have been saying this for years and years the bucs never really get any real media coverage. and the blogger was rigth i waited up until i dont know what time it was waiting on bucs-vikings highlights and i think they were second to last on the show. a 90min show i was falling asleep just trying to see bucs highlights. if AP had ran all over us we woudve been front page with AP proclaimed the next president of the free world with a buc defender hangin off him but he only rushed for 85 yards 24 in the second half it gets pushed to the back. we are 7-3. killed the panthers a few weeks ago and no mention of us whats so ever.we are never gonna ever take center stage unless we win it all. go bucs!!!! screw the media!!!

Posted by  charles, kc,mo on 11/18  at  05:36 PM

Ilive in KC and we get no coverage. I have complained about this numerous times.  The bucs get no attention.  they never do any game breaks to show how the Bucs score.  I am lucky to even see 1 score.  Also I will be at the monday night game. Hope to see all yo Buc fans their.

I’ll be the load one up top yelling his ass off in all the winter Buc’s gear Ihave and find!! It’s gonna be a cold, long day for the Panther’s. It should be a rockem sockem game!! I’m hoping Caddi makes it his debut back over the century mark. Especially since that’s where he ALMOST lost his career!!
But your right...1 game at a time!!

THE CATS LOOK STRONG AT TIMES AND INEPT AT OTHER TIMES. WHICH MEANS BOTH DETROIT AND OAKLAND SHOULD HAVE BEATEN CAROLINA. THAT BEING SAIG LETS TAKE ON THE LIONS AND FOCUS ON 1 GAME AT A TIME. That’s cool when I see Bucs Fans in different areas. Way to represent in hostile territory!!!

Posted by  Michael B, SC on 11/18  at  03:37 PM

I’m fine with the lack of coverage.  Franchises (and my satisfaction with the team I love) is measured in wins, not highlights.

Posted by  Eddie, Charlotte, NC on 11/18  at  03:35 PM

I’M RIGHT THERE WITH YOU ON THAT THAD!! I LIVE HERE IN CHARLOTTE BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THE NFC SOUTH IN GENERAL(MOSTLY THE BUC’S) GET LITTLE TALK OR HIGHLIGHTS ON ESPN! YOUR RIGHT THOUGH...WE AREN’T PRODUCING BIG PLAYS LIKE THE GIANT’S AND CARDINAL’S...SO ON AND SO ON! I ALSO HOPE WE WIN IT ALL IN OUR BACK YARD. DON’T WORRY THOUGH...THAT’S BUC BALL, THAT’S HOW WE PLAY IT AND IT WON’T STOP!! WE NOW HAVE A TRADITION HERE FOR HARD HIT’S ON DEFENSE AND TRADITIONS DIE HARD!! GO BUC’S
