TAMPA – One day after watching him miss two field goals in what proved to be a 16-13 loss to the Redskins, the Bucs cut kicker Mike Nugent.
Nugent’s two misses left him just two-for-six on the year on field goals tries. He was replaced by Shane Andrus, a former Colts kicker who was among several kickers worked out by the Bucs on Monday afternoon.
Nugent, a former second-round pick of the New York Jets, signed with the Bucs as a free agent during the offseason and won the kicker’s job over incumbent Matt Bryant mostly by default.
Hobbled by a sore hamstring, Bryant was unable to kick during the preseason. Bryant was not among the kickers the Bucs worked out on Monday.
Andrus entered the league as a free agent with the Indianapolis Colts in 2006. He played in one game for the Colts in 2009, handling kickoff duties in their season opener against Jacksonville.
Andrus led Indianapolis with 19 points during the 2009 preseason, connecting on 5-of-6 field goal attempts and all four PATs.
In other moves, the Bucs on Monday also cut defensive back Marcus Hamilton.

How is Andrus’ leg on kickoffs? Not that we kickoff that much, but it’d be nice to get some touchbacks or have the opponent pinned inside the 20.
