TAMPA - Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Ronde Barber continues to play at a level that belies the fact that he is only five months away from celebrating his 38th birthday. Or so says San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner.
“That guy is phenomenal,’’ Turner said during a conference call with Tampa Bay media this week. “I know he’s 37 or whatever, but when he has his helmet on he looks like he’s about 24 years old. And he plays like it, too.’’
Now in his 16th season, Barber is playing his first full season at safety but that hasn’t slowed him down. He ranks fourth on the Bucs with 45 tackles, including four for a loss, has three interceptions and a sack.
“He’s a fun guy to watch because he’s just an awesome football player,’’ Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said. “You watch the way he strips the ball and the things he does in the hole against guys like Adrian Peterson; he’s just had an unbelievable career.’’
