TAMPA – The Bucs have taken a lot of heat for all but ignoring the free agency market and deciding to rebuild primarily through the draft.
They’ve been called everything from cheap to imbecilic for taking that approach but there is one former NFL executive and current league analyst who seems to agree with their decision to watch from the sidelines during free agency.
Andrew Brandt, a former Packers VP who writes a column about the business side of football for NationalFootballPost.com, says teams that make a lot of noise in March rarely make big noise when it counts, most in January.
“The big splash signings of free agency certainly create short-term buzz but reality soon sets in,’’ Brandt wrote. “The team now has the player and his wieldy contract to go along with the expectations the signing has created, which are usually not met.’’
