In a season when the Buccaneers will be bringing back their throwback uniforms, the 2009 team are doing their best to emulate their predecessors on the field too.
“We couldn’t catch the ball today but we made up for it by not being able to tackle” John McKay famously once said. If the old ball coach was looking down on Tampa yesterday, he would have seen a similar story against the Giants.
For the British fans watching across the Atlantic, this was enough…. dare I say it ... to be more inclined to follow the England cricket team’s one-day international match in South Africa which at least we had a chance of supporting the winning team in.
For Byron Leftwich, read Randy “Why not Minot” Hedberg, for Michael Clayton read Isaac “Six or nothing” Hagins, for Josh Johnson, read Parnell “Paydirt” Dickinson. All it needed was the latter to throw a pick and claim it “was a good interception because the defender had to jump real high for it”. At least when Leftover throws an interception, he hits the defender right in the numbers.
There are no positives to take away from that game. Well, apart from that it’s finished. The message board haters are in full flow right now, the Grudenistas want their man back, and the unofficial Bill Cowher watch has begun.
But for those of you who think this was like the Leeman Bennett or Richard Williamson days, think again. I have seen all those games on DVD and even though the Bucs looked bad all game yesterday, there is a long way to go down before you reach those depths of despair.
I’m confident of the Bucs winning in Washington next week. Well I have to be really - I’m a Bucs fan. Aren’t you?
