The Gulf boys basketball program finally has a coach.
Gulf athletic director Travis DeWalt announced Tuesday Buck DeWitt will take over the position, which was filled once earlier this summer. DeWitt is a driver’s education teacher and is an assistant football coach at the school.
“Buck has a wealth of knowledge as well as experience, having coached basketball at GHS in the 80s and 90s with significant success,” DeWalt said in an e-mail. “He is extremely excited about the opportunity.”
Steve Thompson was hired in July to replace Paul Schuman, who resigned at the end of the 2008-09 season. A lack of a teaching position caused Thompson to resign nearly one month after accepting the position.
DeWitt, who coached the girls basketball team at Gulf during the 1994-95, 1995-66, 1996-97 seasons, retired in April 1997 due to health issues. At the team he wanted a break between football season and softball season, where he coached the JV team.
