Buccaneers Will Try To Emulate 1997 To Be Successful In 2010

After watching New Orleans pull off an impressive win against Indianapolis in yesterday’s Super Bowl, the natural question Tampa Bay Buccaneers followers are asking is when will their team be back on top.

Considering Tampa Bay had three wins in 2009, plus 10 draft picks this year, it is easy to be pessimistic and say “no time soon.” However, if you look at what Tampa Bay did in 1997, this season could be better than expected.

Lets do some comparisons:

1996 vs. 2009

1996 – Tony Dungy takes over as Bucs coach
2009 – Raheem Morris takes over as Bucs coach

1996 – Bucs finish 6-10
2009 – Bucs finished 3-13

1997 vs. 2010

1997 – Bucs sign ONE free agent (QB Steve Walsh)
2010 – Bucs G.M. Mark Dominik announces Bucs will not be major players in free agency.

1997 – Bucs had 10 draft picks. That draft class included: RB Warrick Dunn, WR Reidel Anthony, T Jerry Wunsch, G Frank Middleton, CB Ronde Barber, LB Alshermond Singleton, TE Patrick Hape, CB Al Harris, WR Nigea Carter and DT Anthony DeGrate. Dunn, Barber and Harris (currently with the Green Bay Packers) eventually became Pro Bowlers.
2010 – Tampa Bay has 10 draft picks – again.

1997 – Tampa Bay finished 10-6 during the regular season and defeated Detroit, 20-10, in the first round of the playoffs before losing to Green Bay in round two.
2010 – To be determined, but Tampa Bay has a chance to be better than it was last season.

There is a big difference between then and now. Wyche had already drafted Sapp, Lynch, Brooks and Alstott. Also, Dungy was actually qualified as a HC and had a great staff (besides OC) which he installed and we had a great owner (Old Man Glazer.) We now have an underqualified HC, no-name coordinators and owners (Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum) as owners. Don’t look for the same outcome. We’ll be lucky to win 5 games this year. Just sayin…
